Through libcap you can catch low level data-link packets and
through libnet you can send those packets.

Unsupported accusation.
Most people in here consider themselves
superior and what admit that Linux is a total
pain in the ass at first. Unless of course
someone has an extraordinary IQ or some
sort of college background in computing.
I belive that anyone who happens to fit the
afore mentioned profiles would not even respond

Subject: Samba Troubles
We're running RH Linux 5.1 on a production server with Samba 2.0.1.
1. We had a Win NT client that worked fine with Samba until installing
NT Service Pack 4 on it.. Now it insists the password is incorrect when
NT tries to access the server. Has anyone seen this or want to give a
suggestion on what to try? (Heretofore we have not used WINS).
2. We need to mount a Win SMB volume on the same Linux server. Mount
complains
fstype smbmount not supported by kernel
Do we just recompile 2.0.34 with smbmount support? Seeing it's a
production system, we'd rather know before just trying things. :)
Thanks to all,

Subject: Delegating DNS resolving?
Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 14:39:35 +1100
Hi all. I'm rather new to the world of DNS, so I'd thought I'd ask the
world:
I heard that it is possible to "delegate" DNS resolving, ie:
registering an IP with the ISP in such a way that your server may run
many subdomains on the same IP.
For example:
foo.bar is my domain
grand is my server
grand.foo.bar is registered as 203.3.45.9
I want to set up many apache virtual servers (easy enough to do):
orange, apple, pear, but all to the same IP. But I want to only have to
change something on my computer each time a server goes up or down, but
nothing on the ISP's computer.
Do I use 'named' to handle this type of situation?
Appreciate anything. Please mail me on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also, on another note, is it possible to set up a Linux computer in such
a way that it may interact with a Novell Netware network? (ie print,
mount filesystems. I couldn't get ncpfs to work. Again, please mail

Hi,
I don't know what you have tried, but try this. Start up the Kernel Daemon
Configuration tool and from the Set Module Options window (I believe the 3rd
window, after choose module type and define module window), leave the irq and
base address blank and click done. Also check the file /etc/conf.modules to
make sure that the option entry defining the base address and irq for the NIC
is deleted. If it is not, then delete it. Leave the line 'alias eth0 3c509'
alone. Reboot the computer and see if the card is recognized.

Well, telnet works, but I have another problem. It seems that somehow
my system thinks it's shutting down even though there is no shutdown
program running. Even after rebooting, it still claims to be shutting
down. Not only that, but it sayd it will shut down at 1 AM today, which
needless to say, was a long time ago. This is preventing me from doing
much of anything (like, say, logging in). Help!?!?

Trying to get RedHat 5.0 is recognize a generic PCI NE2000 NIC. Using
5.1's "NE2000 PCI" driver works fine, but 5.0 is the version used by the
book I'm following ("Linux Networking Toolkit"). Any ideas? Am I better
off just figuring out how to use 5.1 or 5.2?
To give you an idea of my current Linux skill level; at this point I can
basically get Linux up and running with no problem. I know how to use the
file system, use X, etc. Not yet learned any programming. Would like to
eventually use Samba as an alternative to NT as a file server. Most of my
experience is with Macs.
Thanks very much, Keith Privette
P.S. I really like the Linux/GNU/Open Source philosophy. I plan to soon
convert my Mac into a Linux PPC box. Trying to turn my boss on to the
whole idea. Thanks again.

Hello all,
I just upgraded to Netscape 4.5 and now it seems all tcp/ip frames are
being logged to my var/log/messages file! It seems as if PPPD is running
with the debug option but I'm not invoking it with that option.
The var/log/messages file is getting huge and a lot of disk thrashing
is happening.
I'm running kernel 2.0.33 in Suse 5.2 distro.
Any ideas?

Our company has got 2 servers, one is running Linux and the other is running
Windows NT4. The linux server is currently being setup to look after
internet access via an ISDN router. The linux server can currently download
the pop3 mail from our internet accout but it then stores the mail in its own
mail boxes. We are trying to get linux to transfer the pop3 mail to the NT4
server, which is running MS Exchange, to then be passed out to the individual
users own mail boxes.
Our problem is that we are unable to get either of the servers to transfer the
pop3 mail. Any help would be appreciated.

2.0) Try this - its really easy to handle and to install.

LDP and Stevens _UNIX Network Programming_, Chap. 26, both speak of using
Linux sockets to receive frames directly from the ethernet card. I would
like to send directly to the card, as well, and I presume this is possible
with the same socket that one may recv on. Does anyone know how to fill out
the address structure to pass to recv or recvfrom?
More generally, are there other low-level, direct ways to do this (such as
writing to an appropriate special file)? I have not yet found the source
code for the driver (tulip) in my RH5.2 installation, if that is even
available in the source somewhere, but I guess that would reveal how to do
it at lowest level.

This error appeared when I went to 2.1.131 and changing
/sbin/route add -net 127.0.0.0
in a boot-up script to
/sbin/route add -net 127.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 lo
cured it.
The tip off for me was that the route command at the command line did not
show any loopback routing and a hint in the kernel Changes file to the
effect that route parameters should be specified in full. After adding
the netmask the route command shows loopback routing.
Your problem might not be exactly this, but it is likely to be along the
same lines.

I don't have the answer, but in case it would help someone who knows, I
started getting the same error after I started running the 2.2.0pre
kernels. On my Debian system, it happens right after the cdrom is mounted
at bootup (i'm not sure if it's connected.) I decided to bite the bullet
and upgrade to slink, which brought some other minor things back
up-to-date with the kernel, but I still get this message. what is it?

Daring to challenge the will of the almighty Leviam00se, Mike Scott
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) had the courage to say:
: I have a PCI SMC EZ 10/100 I am trying to install in Redhat 5.2 along
: with a NE2000 compatible card. I editted the conf.modules file to
: include these two cards with the correct io and irq settings. For the
: SMC EZ card- I used the SMC Ultra driver which should work according to
: the FAQ.
*Bzzzt!* I'm sorry that's incorrect, but thanks for playing.
There are actually two different SMC cards with 'EZ' in their names,
and they do not use the same driver.
The SMC EtherEZ 8416 is a 10Mbps ISA bus card which does in fact use
the SMC Ultra driver (the card is an NS8390 derivative).
The SMC EZ Card PCI 10/100 1211TX is a 10/100Mbps PCI bus card which
uses a RealTek 8139 chip and requires the rtl8139 driver.
Notice the difference: EtherEZ versus EZ Card. Yes, I know it's corny.
It makes somewhat more sense to refer to them by model number (8416 vs.
1211TX). In any case, you need to install the rtl8139 driver. You should
be able to find it from Donald Becker's collection either via HTTP at
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers or via FTP at
ftp://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers. I don't know if it comes
with RedHat 5.2 or not.

First decide what new stuff from rh52 you want. possibly the kernel
and perhaps some other packages that you use that may have been upgraded.
check www.redhat.com for the differences between 5.1 and 5.2.
Then download just those things that you need and want and manually upgrade
your
system with the rpm.

yup. I saw the host as Minwalker 10.1010.11 instead of 10.10.10.11. I
didn't realize this was causing the problem, and I hadn't gotten around
to fixing it. It works now. :)

I personally have had great success with the netgear cards, which also
use the tulip.c drivers. I got mine for ~$20 or ~$30 (maybe more) at
fry's in portland, OR. I also have a 3com 3c905b-tx, which has given me
a tough time getting working in linux, but fine under '95.
