I downloaded Samba 2.0.0 and compiled and installed it on the system. It
came with a cool admin tool called SWAT. It is a web based tool that you
can access from anywhere on the local intranet. It has a page to use for
changing passwords. I still have a few bugs to work out of it. So far I
can't change my own password, but should be able to. Next time I try it I
write down the error message it gives. Maybe someone out there knows how to
configure it properly

mars won't do it: it emulates a Netware server and you need a client
to be able to access your real Netware server.
You should be able to do what you want with either ncpfs
or the Caldera client. If you don't need NDS, I would start
with the open source ncpfs and see if it meets your needs.

Subject: A little newbie help... seeing Win95 shares in Linux
Date: 18 Jan 1999 14:48:05 -0800
I have a Win95 box and a Linux box ethernetted together. I have Samba up and
running on Linux and I can share the Samba shares from Win95 with no problem.
When I try to access one of the shares on the Win95 box from the Linux box, I
get a message that RPC can't make a connection.
This is when trying "mount -t nfs win95box:/c /mnt/win95box/c". Is that right?
I've tried "smbclient \\win95box\c" in just about every syntax I can and
smbclient always tells me there aren't enough "\" in the parameter. How many do
I need to put in and where?
I checked out "man rpc", which tells me to run "rpc client foo bar" to engage
the RPC client. Okay, but... the executable "rpc" is in my /sbin/init.d
directory, and its only options are "rpc start" and "rpc stop", and it doesn't
seem to help.
Any hints?

Need I make some other entires in any configuration files ?

Hi Folks,
When i boot my system, everything works fine. Then I enter:
/etc/init.d/netbase stop

/etc/init.d/netbase start
Now i can't connect to any TCP port anymore. No telnet. No FTP. No
Samba. Nothing. InetD refuses any connection. My logfile:

So far, there are two problems. netbios-ns, socks and swat are all in
the services file. The user root exists ofcourse. The very strange
thing is, that a system reboot will get everything to work, even
samba, even swat and even socks.
Does somebody have any idea?

Subject: PPP and Diald
Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 20:15:57 -0500
Anybody have any clues about what the magic incantation is to get diald to
route correctly? The connection is a dynamic one to a standard ISP. I have
pppd calling and connecting to the ISP just fine manually. The route gets
set and all of my lan machines can get out on the internet. When diald is
started the modem dials out, connects, and logs in but the routing is not
correct. It appears that the defaultroute that diald is installing blocks
pppd from putting in the new dynamic route.
Here is the /etc/diald.conf file:
mode ppp
dynamic
local 192.168.0.3
remote 192.168.0.4
reroute
defaultroute
device /dev/ttyS1
connect /etc/ppp/scripts/ppp-on
modem
speed 115200
lock
crtscts
include /user/lib/diald/standard.filter
Here is the /etc/ppp/options file:
debug
noipdefault
The ppp-on script file has the line:
exec /usr/sbin/pppd debug \
asyncmap 20A0000 escape FF kdebug 0 $LOCAL_IP:$REMOTE_IP \
netmask $NETMASK connect $DIALER_SCRIPT
If the following command is used manually without the diald functionality
the system routing works great.
exec /usr/sbin/pppd debug lock modem crtscts /dev/ttyS1 115200 \
asyncmap 20A0000 escape FF kdebug 0 $LOCAL_IP:$REMOTE_IP \
noipdefault netmask $NETMASK connect $DIALER_SCRIPT
Any help or guidance on where to look would be greatly appreciated.

Robin is correct, I have been using a crossover cable for many years between 2
computers. The only problem is when you need to add a third computer/component
(printer), then you can't use a crossover cable and must use a hub or switcher.

I'm running into problems when trying to host a Civilization 2 game. I
can join a game just fine, it's the hosting that's the problem. When
people try to join, the get a "connection refused" from me, and, of
course, they never show up in the "waiting for players" dialog. Here's
my setup:
P120, RH 5.1, 2.0.36, eth0->cable modem, eth1->10baseT hub
K6-200, dual boot RH 5.2/Windoze95
I think that using ipfwadm might fix the prob, but the docs I find on it
are sparse. I'm hesitant about using it, cause then I might be open for
other nastiness. Will that work, or do I need to wait for an
ip_masq_civ2mpe.o module to be written?

I don't know about through the windows gui, but you could run a http server
on the linux box and set up some kind of user-friendly form with a CGI
script on an intranet web page to change passwords...the http server's
pretty easy to set up if you don't already have it...as for the CGI, it
shouldn't be all that tough...I know my ISP uses a CGI password change page,
even if you're in a shell account and type "passwd" it uses lynx to go to
the page, so it would appear that this kind of system works well
someone probably knows an easier way so in that case just ignore me

I saw that when I added parameters to the line in /etc/init.d/dhcpc
start-stop-daemon --option1 --option2 /sbin/dhcpcd eth0
which would give that message with legal params:
start-stop-daemon --option1 --option2 /sbin/dhcpcd -h ISP_user_ID eth0
In this case I started stopping the use of the start-stop-daemon, instead:
/sbin/dhcpcd -d -h ISP_user_ID eth0
....which is not always an option.
You can page back into your startup messages by shift-pageup.
You can "less /var/log/syslog".

Hi,
I am setting up a network server in a student home. This server, a linux
redhat with apache, is connected to a firewall to the internet..
I had some problems lately and found out that someone is trieing to hack
his way into my system...
His atack is diferent everytime..
Now my guestion is...
How can i test my system myselve..
I have one computer that is not behind the fire wall so i can hack
myselve in my own system-computer to test the fire wall.
A am lurning a lot but it is not easy, never told it was easy...
For me it is a project to get it running wihout problems, i was
managing ok sofar, until mister hacker came along.
I tried to get some programs. But most of the time hard to get..
Does anyone have some programs or links to programs that test ports,
sniff, maybe test ipspoofing problems, programs running on a port i
forgot about... Just a program that looks for holes...
Does something like that exist?
What do you recomend...
Maybe you can send it to me...
Thanks a lot..
Remko..
By the way is there a way to stop a hacker trieing?
