Can anyone help? I have my PPP connection set up (Slackware 3.5), and
everything works fine, except that it won't authentificate me at any speed
over 19200.

Is this problem know, and how can I correct it?

Thank you.

The table below does not seem real. Can you provide a captured
output
of route from the appropriate machines? What are the real
numbers
for a.b.c ??

Can you also provide /etc/hosts, /etc/hosts.conf, /etc/networks,
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* there should be at least
eth0 here.
What were the ipfwadm commands you executed? What is the cat of
/proc/ip_forwarding?

The final solution (if you'll pardon the expression)
Some of which you've heard before, but I'm so happy I'll tell you
anyway!

PROBLEM:
Notice that in the first place on boot up the machine attempts to probe
for the card on a PCI bus.
SOLUTION:
recompile ne module with ISA support enabled NOT PCI

PROBLEM:
Notice that in the messages log it says that outgoing ping's Tx is
timing out, suggested reason, lost IRQ.
SOLUTION:
Recompile kernel with network support included! (And remeber to remove
the module from the conf.module file!)

PROBLEM:
The machine cannot detect which IRQ the card is using on boot up, so
eth0 is not initialised
SOLUTION:
Check which IRQ are free. Unplug all expansion cards from other PC, plug
in network card. Boot machine in dos mode (after trying to get a dos
boot disk to work in the Linux machine and failing). Set IRQ to 15 not
9. (Even though 9 was not being used, it still wouldn't detect it)
Reassemble both machines.

PROBLEM:
When choosing which other machine on the network to do a test ping to
choose one which is switched on and connected to the hub.
SOLUTION:
Don't be quite as thick next time.

Just in case anybody cared....

Sam

Have you tried login as a user other that root ?
You may not telnet and enter as root unless you
modify the file /etc/securetty

I'm looking for software (source or linux exec) that provides an ILS-type LDAP service

work with M$ NetMeeting. Has anyone even succeeded in doing this? So far I have found
no reference to Linux and Netmeeting anywhere on the net except for problems with

Then I just don't get it. I have plain RHL 5.2 installed. Made my own kernel and ran
ipfwadm without a single problem.

So there must be a bit more to it and that may be the cause to why the problem wasn't
solved yet because RedHat couldn't reproduce the problem.

Subject: PPP into linux box causes diald to bring up PPP out as well
Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 20:04:43 +0000
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello All!
I'm dealing with a small office server running redhat where diald
provides a connection to the internet using pppd. Recently I added a
dial in PPP connection, and now when I telnet to the server with my
dialin connection it comes up with the 'Connected To..' message straight
away, (so I presume that my machine connects to the server directly) but
there
is a delay before I get the 'Login' and 'Password' prompts, I'm pretty
sure that it's during this delay that diald brings up the link to the
internet. Presumably the server gets a connection from my client machine
OK, but then can't figure out how to route packets back to it. So I
added to my ip-up script;
             'route -host <hostip> dev <ppp-device>'
where <hostip> and <ppp-device> are arguments passed to the script that
tell it the ip address of the client and which net interface it is on (I
detect which tty device as well, so that I only do this for the dial-in
link). I was totally confident that this was the solution to the
problem, supplying an explicit route back to the client, so that packets
wouldn't get sent to the default route of the diald 'fake' slip device,
and cause the internet link to come up. IT MADE NO DIFFERENCE
WHATSOEVER! Help! I'm sure that should have worked and have no idea what
to do now!

On another note, I want to be able to offer certain admin tasks (of
which ppp-on and ppp-off are examples) as options on the embryonic
company intranet through the use of cgi-scripts to kick off the
appropriate commands. However, a lot of these commands seem to require
the user to be root. I don't want to run the webserver as root, because
that seems to much like asking for it, but I can't find any way to
execute these commands otherwise (the setuid permission to make the
effective user root when a script is run doesn't seem to help any). As
a last resort I'm going to try piping the password into the su program
in one of the scripts (what a pity that I can't just pass it on the
command line, let me guess, that would be a security hole wouldn't it?)
but if anyone has a more elegant solution I'd like to hear it!

Thanks a lot
Colum

I gave this a go once before, but my problem was something wrong with
the server side of things. If you can access the Internet from the
server then you ought to check out an IP-Masquerading HOWTO on the
Everything Linux site (http://www.eunuchs.org/linux) and see if that
mentions anything you've missed. From what I can remember, the main
thing you have to do in Windows is set up your browser to connect to the
Internet via proxy, for which you use the IP address of your server -
don't quote me on this, though, it's been a long time since I've tried
anything in this direction...

You'd have to use a kernel with the capabilities patches installed,
and revoke the pcability of socket binding from the non-Internet
users. This will also affect their ability to do some things on the
"local" machine too, though, I think.
