I can ping; but can't ftp.
I have RedHat 5.2 installed on one machine which is connected through a
hub to a Win98 machine. This is my simple home lan.
During the RedHat installation, I also installed the "ftp package". When
I use glint under X, it verifies that the ftp package is installed.
When I ftp from the Win98 machine, using the IP of the Linux box, I see
a mssg "connected"; and then a couple sec later, I see a mssg
"disconnected by remote host".
When I ftp on the Linux box to itself, (localhost); I see "connected",
then "421 Service not available, remote server closed connection".
I don't care about DNS. I just want to ftp using IP addresses.
Am I supposed to "activate" the ftp package somehow? What am I missing?
Tia,
Mark

NEWSFLASH: PROOF POSITIVE!
Jesus proven King of kings...
Yes, here's absolutely irrefutable, scientifically-verifiable evidence
that plainly demonstrates Jesus the Nazarene called the Christ to be the
One and Only Messiah of the Hebrew Old Testament(TaNaKh). I discovered
these facts through very careful, exhaustive research and deduction by
comparing extant secular-historical evidences with the testimony which
was so faithfully recorded in the ancient Hebrew Canon, which necessarily
includes BOTH Old and New Covenant Scriptures.
Please enjoy reading, and feel free to copy any or all portions of my article

this article and forward it to your favorite newsgroups as often as you like.
The time *is* short, so be sure to get the word out: Jesus Christ *is* LORD!
Oh, and one more thing, don't forget to forward/carbon copy this message
via email to *all* of your relatives, friends and associates on the Net.
And be sure to print this out and copy it and distribute it to everyone

Subject: NFS problem between Solaris and Linux
Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 00:18:37 -0700
Hello All,
I have a Solaris client that is trying to mount a NFS volume from a Linux
server. When I mount the volume on Solaris I get the message:"No network
locking on leopard:/u1 contact admin to install server change". The volume
goes ahead and mounts but exhibits some strange behavior.
Well, I am the admin and I don't know what server change to install. The
Solaris folks say that there needs to be a lock daemon running, but I don't
see anything about it in the Linux docs.
A strange behavior alluded to above is that any file created on the
NFS-mounted volume gets a user-id of 65534 and a group nobody.
Can someone help me understand what the problem is? I've looked in the
HOWTO's but didn't see the answer and I hate having the Solaris folks tell
me its a problem with Linux.
Thanks!

it with Shaw Wave and Shaw@Home. If you want instructions, please visit

This is a rough guidline for using the cable modem. If you need help do not

You may want to freshen your table using the ARP protocol to request the
ethernet address of everyone on your segment. More detail on ARP can
be found in

How is your ISP delivering mails to you, for your Domain.
Via SMTP, or do you have one POP3 Account where all mail will be forwarded to ?
If it's simply one POP3 account, you should look for something like "fetchmail"
to read the POP-mails using your linux-box, and then do a POP3 login from your
NT Server to Linux to retrieve them from there.
However, there are actually lot of different ways...
