I have mgetty on one of my systems handling ppp dialin connections. The lines
seem to be very unstable. Users connect and the line disconnects or becomes
stale but still alive within about 5 min. I have USR 56k modems. I have tried
port speeds at all levels. and a couple of differnt inits for the modems.
Also, the modems to seem to be reseting properly once the line is droped.  I
would like advise from anyone having even the slightest clue as to what the
problem may be.  An init string. A configuration change. Even different
modems. I am just at my wits end and in desperate need of advise. Thank you.

I am having difficulties getting linux to recognize a SMC EtherEZ (8416T)
ethernet adapter.  Under windows plug n play, it lists the hardware
address as 0x280, and the irq=3.  I have tried using the modprobe command:

modprobe smc-ultra.o io=0x280 irq=3

and the machine responds that it is unable to find the card.
(Unfortunately, I cannot get to the machine right now to get the exact
message.)

The card works just fine under windows, so I don't think there is a
problem with the card.

Any suggestions?

I have an almost *perfect* network setup between my 3 PC machines.
I have the flexibility to boot any one of them into either W95/W98
or Linux and talk to the others, and print to the one with the printer.

I *thought* that my smbmounts between Linux machines was perfect
as well, but I have found that one does not work at all:

[root@frodo1 /root]# smbmount ////frodo2/rootdir /mnt/frodo2
Password:
mount error: Operation not supported by device
Please look at smbmount's manual page for possible reasons

This is a generic message that I cannot figure out at all!

frodo2 and frodo3 can smbmount from themselves to frodo1
frodo1 cannot smbmount to either frodo2 or frodo3

Can anyone help?  Which machine is at fault?

I have looked at all the relevant files and they are all
almost identical.

since telnet packets are sent over the network in clear text, passwords
can be "sniffed", ie, people connected to the network could steal your
password. for a root account, this is especially a bad idea, therefore,
most distributions disable root's ability to telnet in by default. if
you REALLY WANT TO, and feel that there is virtually no security risk,
you could open up the file /etc/securetty and edit it. it's a list of
all the ttys that the system will let root in on... in your case, you'd
probably add ttyp0 through ttyp3 or something like that... this is,
however, a very bad idea if you are the least bit interested in
security. if i were you, i'd install ssh... for the most part, it's like
telnet, but the packets are encrypted on either end with a
public/private key scheme, before they are sent across the network...
ssh can let root in even if you aren't letting root telnet in.

                They didn't compile it with the option --with-smbmount.
                You have two options AFAIK.
                Either compile it yourself, (to make it an RPM however is
pretty difficult) or use the 2.0.0beta5 rpm (with smbmount) that
I have made. The guys at rhcn seem not to be interested in my rpm
however therefore don't expect to find it there.
                If you really want it send me an email (or nag rhcn.redhat.com
to accept my rpm) to provide you an url to download it from.

It's wierd...

I am using RH5 with Ip_masq.  When I use Ip-masq the client machines can surf
the net.. do the mail thing.. ftp... etc...

But they can't ping anything in www land.  Not even the IP address of my
ISP's nameserver...  the pings just timeout

The linux machine has no problem pinging anything on the web.

In TCP/IP properties I have my IP specified as 192.168.0.3
The gateway as 192.168.0.1
and my ISP's DNS and domain as what they should be.

A sample route print from the win95 machine: Network Address  Netmask 
Gateway Address  Interface  Metric 0.0.0.0  0.0.0.0  192.168.0.1  192.168.0.3
 1 127.0.0.0  255.0.0.0  127.0.0.1  127.0.0.1  1 192.168.0.0  255.255.255.0

hmmm.. anything else I should include/exclude???

Another wierd thing that happens...  I just disconnected form my ISP so I
didn't tie up my phone line while I typed this message.. I type route print

this happens quite a bit... I have no idea what those two mysterious IP
addresses are.  Also.. when I restart the win95 mahcine and the linux box is
NOT connected at the time and I type route print I get my ISP's nameserver
IP's in replacement of the mysterious IP's above.  In either case I have to
actually goto the dos prompt and remove them from the route table before
IP_masq will work.  As you may guess my wife does not like to check the route
table everytime she wants to check her mail.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing either of these probs... ???
any suggestions would be appretiated.

I don't know about 2.0.34, but it doesn't do that in 2.2.0pre4. I
recently had to reinstall it after upgrading my kernel from 2.0.35 to
the pre4, and it went smooth.(slackware 3.6)

This is an odd question.  If the domain.com zone exists then a server
for this zone DNS must already be set up somewhere.  To create more
entries in the zone simply edit the zone file.  If you have no access
to this server you must get the start of authority for domain.com
moved to a server you do have access to.  (You must also find some
slaves).  Obviously all manchines acting as DNS servers must have DNS
server software set up.

Check this:
1) Disconnected, click on the kppp "setup" button.  Choose your dialup 
account from the list, and click the "edit" button.
2) Under the "Dial" tab, at the bottom of the dialog, find a button 
labelled "Arguments" and click it.
3) You should be in a "Customize" window, where you can add line-item 
configuration parameters (those are documented in the pppd man page).
     
In this fashion, I added the entries to the list: 
mru 296
mtu 296
