Hello,
Thanks for helping me setting up my small 2 computer LAN.
Thanks to your advice, the computers can ping each other. The Proxy can ping
the client and the client can ping the proxy no problem. I set up netscape
to connect via proxy will all the numbers set correctly (192.168.0.1 port
80)
The problem is that when I go in netscape to browse somehere I get the
following error:
SOCKET ERROR 10049
what does that mean? strange no? How can I correct this?
Client is a RedHat 5.2 Linux
Proxy is a win98 under wingate

Any ideas on a way to copy files with original ownership intact from

Hallo Networker !

It was some sort of name lookup timeout. On 192.168.1.3 there is a

But I would still like to know why exactly this lag was caused.

I noticed you had some knowledge of Netservers (and the hp.com email address)
so I'm wondering if you might be able to help me out.
I picked up a a Netserver LD (for almost nothing) and was wondering if there
is any source of info or examples of using it with Linux. Specifically I would
like to be able use the hot-swap drives. I don't care if I have to purchase a
different scsi controller, I just want to have the fault tolerance.

Hi,
I've never posted to this list before, so excuse any poor etiquite. Here's
the problem. Periodically my linux 2.0.36 machine crashes with this in
/var/adm/messages:
Jan 27 15:39:04 twistdrill kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 00b1e000, ^Lr3 =
00b1e000 Jan 27 15:39:04 twistdrill kernel: *pde = 00000000 Jan 27 15:39:04

27 15:39:04 twistdrill kernel: EIP: 0010:[<00b2f826>]
When the machine crashes, I see some kind of loop going on the console.
I have no idea what is going on here, I have no idea where to start looking
for the problem. I will greatly appreciate any suggestions, hints, pointers
to documentation, whatever.
Thank you very much,

Is it possible to specify netmasks for IP aliases when

stuff out of the ifup* scripts and put it in the ifcfg-* files?

I have RedHat 5.2 and I look forward for something easy to upgrade without

Please make a RPM package of the new kernel.

Subject: Problems with remote printing from VMS to Linux
Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 21:09:07 +0000
Hello,
I want to setup my machine as a print server and want to be able
to print from other machines (Linux, Windows, and VMS) through it.
Now the relevant entry in the printcap file looks like this:
try:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp0:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:lp=/home/vilmos/test:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/filter:
I just simply try to print to a file for testing. Right now I have
two entries my /etc/hosts.lpd file. One for a Linux box, and the
other is for a VMS machine. I prepared the VMS lpd style printing
according to this wonderful document:
http://www-jerry.oit.duke.edu/dec_stuff/vms_remote_printing_readme.html
The setup went flawlessly, but I cannot print from the VMS. The Linux
box prints fine. Here are the relevant entries from my
/var/log/messages:
lpd[29128]: linux.box.edu requests recvjob try
lpd[29155]: vms.box.edu requests recvjob try
lpd[29155]: try: job could not be printed (cfA014vms.box.edu)
(I have changed the machine names.)
I use RedHat 5.2. I did rtfm around, but still no printing from the VMS
although printing from Linux is fine.
Anyone has any ideas what is wrong?
thanks for your time, Vilmos Soti

Thanks to Cliff I am very close to get my Linux dial-up
connection working to my work's Windows PPP server. I
followed your suggestions and I am now getting much better
results. Except that a ping to a work office machine is
not working (I don't konw if it is a route problem or not).
I tried connecting with a domain name (fns.com\\rsg) and
without (rsg), as can be seen below. But it did not make
any difference on solving the ping problem.

: This is what my laptop Linux 'netup' script looks
: like:
: insmod 8390
: MODPATH=/lib/modules/2.0.34/net:/lib/modules/2.0.34/pcmcia
: export MODPATH
: insmod pcnet_cs
: ifconfig eth0 inet 192.168.0.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
: route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
: #route add default gw 192.168.0.2 eth0
: /usr/sbin/routed
: I noticed that I could not have BOTH my PPP connection
: running *and* a local network running if I had that
: 'route add default gw...' stuff. So I commented it
: out and it works fine.
You really don't need a default gateway unless the LAN requires routing
to another LAN or to the Internet through a host running routed or gated.
The eth0 network route you have above will route things for the LAN to
the LAN with or without the ppp connection. Pppd was designed not to
replace an existing default route, even with the option defaultroute.

Ah. So simple! I myself used that technique to install a true-type font
server.

I removed the font server in the same manner. Simple!
Couldn't launch a terminal window (missing libraries), couldn't launch
anything under X at all. Exited X to do some checking, couldn't launch X.
Despite certain libraries being needed by my system, RPM took it upon itself
to remove them anyways. Not only were they required, they were required by
RPM packages still installed. There is no excuse for this action on the part
of my software.

Query a package: "xxx is not installed."
Install it: Installation fails because "xxx is already installed."
Lovely.

Well, Bernie, much of the software out there is perpetually Alpha, pre-Alpha
or Beta. The minority is release level.
