I am trying to get linux to load my ethernet card. And at several places it
responds "eth0: unkown device"
Also, I don't see a message about it loading when i type "dmesg" I do have
the "eth0 eepro100" line in my conf.modules file. Also the network
configuration menu in redhat reports the device as inactive. Then i
activate it close the window and go back to it and it again says inactive.
Does anyone know what my problem is?
Thanks

I am new to Linux and I am having some problems detecting the network card.
I have a linksys LTE100TX network card but Red Hat ( 5.01 ) installation did not
pick it up
how can I configure Linux to use the card ?
Note: The chip on the card says Linksys
Thanks in advance.

I have a wierd problem. From my Windows95 machine I can ping the linux
machine, send dhcp requests and get dhcp server responses, but I can not
telnet to the machine. If I run tcpdump on the linux machine I see the
packet come in but nothing goes out. If I run inetd in debug mode I
don't see any activity to make me think inetd ever sees the packets. I
have no ipfwadm rules and the default is accept for input, output and
forward.
Any ideas?

Well upgrading your distribution to accept the new kernel would be done for
him if he waited for rpms or the next distribution. I have error messages
from a rpm that wouldn't install.

Maybe is my problem. (I posted a question titled "Strange chars <something>")
I'm trying to connect via PPP to the University of Wisc PPP server. The modem
connects and then I see garbage chars (in /var/log/messages that is).
What would I see if they're assuming I'm going to start using PPP right away?

I have a simple network with 2 machines running Redhat 5.1.
The network seems to work fine. I can ping both ways
using the IP numbers as well as the machine names.
Im also able to ftp between the two machines.
However when I attempt to telnet from one
machine to the other there is a problem.
I get connected to the other machine
and see the initial greeting:
Red Hat Linux Release 5.1 (Manhattan)
Kernel 2.0.35 on an i486
After that is nothing. No login prompt.
After 60 seconds I get a message that
the login timed out and the connection
was closed by foreign host.
I can go to the other machine and run telnet successfully
locally. But it doesnt work remotely.
Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: 2 Intel Ether Express 16 Cards?
Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 23:37:49 -0800
OK, I am using RedHat 5.2. I have two Intel Ether Express cards set up
with different configurations (0x300, irq 11 and 0x270, irq 10). I am
trying to set the first one to eth0 and the second to eth1 through the
eexpress module. On bootup, it picks up the first card just fine and
sets eth0 to it, but it says something similiar to the effect that it is
delaying eth1 (?). And eth1 never gets set to the 2nd card. My
/etc/conf.modules is:
alias eth0 eexpress
alias eth1 eexpress
options eexpress io=0x300,0x270 irq=11,10
Any ideas?? Thanks!

Works like a charm :-)
We use IBM compatible ISA (!!!) TokenRing Cards with Linux. PCI wont work!
Also at the moment (in 2.0.x Kernels, dont know about 2.1.x and 2.2.0)
only _ONE_ TokenRing NIC will work. The Name of the IP Interface is "tr0".
We also use ISA Cards from Olicom. At ftp://ftp.olicom.com you will find
Drivers
for Linux. AFAIK they will also work for the Olicom PCI Cards. The Name of
the
IP-Interface is "eth0" for the 2.0.x Kernels and "tr0" for the 2.1.x
Kernels.
Madge is also producing a TR Driver for their PCI Cards. You have to write
them a eMail and ask for the Driver (you can download the Driver in an ARJ
Archive from their FTP-Site, but it is passord protected). But I never tried
this....

Subject: NIS: Redhat 5.2 client, SunOS Server??
Date: 28 Jan 1999 23:54:36 GMT
I've just setup a new RedHat 5.2 system that I'd like to integrate into an
existing NIS environment. The NIS server and all the other clients are
running SunOS.
I've got it to the point where the Linux box is communicating with the NIS
server. I can ypcat the passwd file, etc. What I can't do is log into
the system using any username/password from the NIS map.
The NIS server is using C2 security, so it has a passwd.adjunct file. It
appears to me that the PAM system can find the passwd entry but is
ignoring passwd.adjunct...?
Does anyone have RedHat 5.2 working as an NIS client with a Sun server
that uses passwd adjunct? And if so, how'd you do it?
Thanks,
Mark

Dear Networkers:
Please bear with me, I have been at this all afternoon.
As you will be able to conclude from all that is below, I need to either
A) load the SMBFS module, that is bresent in my system but not supported
by my kernel or B) Install Samba which has an SMBFS client to handle
what I want done.
I need a little assistance to do either,.......please
To do A),....can I use the available insmod command ? If so, I
think I need a little syntax help.
To do B),....would the version called "samba-latest.tar.gz" do
the trick,...again, if so where should I load it,...?
For now I simply need to have Apache, on the Linux, retreive and serve
the Home Pages which are on the WindowsNt 4.00.1381.
I started with these requests, which were really quite quickly responded
to,.....
1) Has this problem been addressed ? I went through all the
FAQs and the whole Virtual Hosts documentation and cannot see where I am
erring.
Scenario; I have a small LAN, the DNS Server is on Linux
and the Webserver is Apache.
I want the Apache to respond to any HTTP
query for www.continuuminternational.com with a Home Page which resides
on a Windows NT Workstation which is within my LAN. Everytime I restart
my Apache after having reconfigured the httpd.conf file, I get the
following response referring only to the re-direct which is off my DNS
server and on the NT. (I am planning to load the NT with alot of
Virtual Sites since it has a huge hard-disk): Warning ! Document Root
<NT.IP.number/directory/index.htm> DOES NOT EXIST.
My httpd.conf file configuration is as follows:
<VirtualHost NT.IP.number>
ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot NT.IP.number/directory/index.htm
ServerName www.foo.com
</VirtualHost>
I have tried all kinds of combinations with both the IP #s and the names
and even reversed the / to \. I still get the same response. And by
the way, what ahppens to the Log fies, I assume they are maintained by
the NT since it controls the file once served.
2) So, I set a Share on the NT, the whole drive is shared, but when I
went back to the Linux(2.0.29BTW), I found I have no manual at all for
the smbmount command, suggested to use to mount the shared directory.
May I be so bold as to ask you for the syntax for such a
command that I would then write in
back of DocumentRoot,...?
I thought I would mount the share onto /nt,........ ; . )
ps,...yes, there is a web server on the NT and yes, Apache is on the
Linux,......I don't usually include
/index.html in the DocumentRoot but, as I said, I was really
frustrated,...thanks for the assistance,..
Sincerely,
Robert Verdicchio

Reading this thread, Darren, I see that you have your /etc/hosts

a nameserver the system looks in it's own /etc/hosts to find out the
address of the other computer, it doesn't look across the net for
it. If you knew this then the problem is something else.

Hi,
I have a "Leaf" ISA Ethernet adaptor that I used to run with my PC before it
got another lease of life with Linux! (I have seen the light!)
However, I cannot find a driver anywhere near this on my distrib- (all 6
disks!)- can anyone suggest where I could get a driver?
"Leaf" on a search engine gives not a lot (for hardware devices anyway).
All the info I have is "Leaf 16 bit ISA Ethernet Adaptor", and the DOS files
reported ISA3004 (ndi).
I do have a SCO Unix driver for this card ("P916.tar")- i am presuming that
this is no good to (Red Hat) linux.
Any helpers, pointers, resources, or usefull drivers most gratefully ....!
Cheers, Jon.

I had problems getting Red Hat 5.2 to recognize my 8019 a few weeks
ago. The NE2000 driver in Linux couldn't find the card, even when I
told it the address and irq. For Linux use, Realtek suggests setting
the card to jumperless mode instead of plug and play, and setting the
address/irq info on the card. I also remember reading somewhere,
possibly the isapnptools or pnpdump man pages that isapnptools doesn't
work well with some network cards, so I decided to use Realtek's
solution. Go to http://www.realtek.com.tw/cn/driver/8019-driver.htm
and download rset8019.exe to do the job. Read all the info on the
program on their website. I just chose the same settings the card had
under Windows (it's a dual boot Linux/Win98 setup). The program was
something of a pain to work with, it took several tries to get it to
work, but after that Linux has had no problems with the card.
Basically to get rset8019 to work, it must extract in a 32 bit
environment, with no drivers loaded for the nic, but the card must be
initialized. Good luck, hope this helps. Now if I could figure out why
minicom works and my chatscript doesn't...

After I compiled kernel from 2.0.34-1 to 2.0.36-3,my D-Link DE220 ISA PnP
LAN adapter
did not work.At first,I think it is because I compiled it as module, and
switch to
/lib/modules/2.0.36-3/net/to install it.After I ran "insmod 8390.o" and
"insmod ne.o",
there came some error messages:
insmod 8390.o (I must install this first,or ne.o can not be installed.)

Maybe there is something wrong in my compiled file, maybe it's for other
reasons,who knows?
Whatever I PING,there must be a message "Network Unreachable".
And,it worked fine when I use kernel 2.0.34-1 (use NE2000 compatible
driver.),I am running
RedHat 5.1 .
Any suggestion will be appreciate.

Hi !
I Finally got my two network cards working. Thanx for the help so far. But
now on to the real work.
I'll try to explain once more my goals.
I have a Linux box with two NIC's.
First is a PCNet32 card (10mbit) with IP 192.168.1.1.
Second is a 3c905B (100mbit) with IP 192.168.2.1.
as you can see I would like two have two segments, a 10 mbit and a 100 mbit.
Here comes the big questions:
-what do I have to do to make that all PC's (all win95) connected in the
10mbit area (network 192.168.1.0) can browse the network neighbourhood so
that they can 'see' all PC's in the 100 mbit area (network 192.168.2.0)
Note that I need to do file sharing accross the two networks, so a ping is
not enough, I need to be able to resolve the computer names and shares.
Well that's it for now, If you can help me in some way PLEASE do not
hesitate. I really need it :)

I think you have to enter some parameters at boot time (LILO)
try this:
boot: Linux ether=0,0,eth1
and see if it detects your card. If it does you can add this line to your
lilo.conf:
append="ether=0,0,eth1"
Good Luck !

Hallo,
here a short ( and maybe silly and often asked) question:
I read the Linux-HA-Howto and now want to know if there is a
possibility to keep an TCP connection alive in the case of an takeover?
Is it possible (theoretical, practical), or is it inpossible due to
TCP Ethernet protocol specifications?
thanks in advance for your answers
peter
