Are you sure the request are going out to the net? Monitor
with tcpdump -nei eth0, tcpdump -nei ppp0 and verify that
what's on the net is going out ppp0. There are normal arp
queries that occur from machine to machine. This is how
machines find out about other machines that start up after
the network comes up. You would normally never notice this.
When you see the requests you mentioned what programs on MS are
running? What is the task list?

I tried... but I failed.
Now I can=B4t access any DN outside. Named tells me "No root nameservers
for class IN".

Subject: Problem with ethernet startup: SIOCSADDR etc...
Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 09:16:16 -0600
Greetings,
I'm in the process of upgrading to the 2.2.0 kernel, and have stumbled upon
a puzzler I can't solve. For some reason, after compiling the kernel and
rebooting, the following error messages appear during the boot process.
SIOCSIFADDR: Operation not supported by device
eth0: unknown interface: Operation not supported by device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: Operation not supported by device
SIOCSIFBRDADDR: Operation not supported by device
eth0: unknown interface: Operation not supported by device
SIOCADDRT: Operation not supported by device
SIOCADDRT: Operation not supported by device
SIOCADDRT: Operation not supported by device
I've discovered so far that it has to do with finding the ethernet card, which
is a Kingston NE2000 PCI card. The /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
file has an ONBOOT flag set to "yes". When I turn this to "no" the messages
disappear. So, I configured ne2k-pci.c as a module, and set onboot to no, and
booted with no problems. I note that the kernel does not see my ethernet card
at base=0x2c0 irq=3 as it should, and when I run "ifup eth0" I get the above
error messages. If I try to modprobe ne2k-pci.o I get the error:
init_module: device or resource busy
and it says it cannot find any (usable) network cards.
I have a feeling this has something to do with the way I'm configuring the
kernel for the PCI bus, but I have no idea what it could be. It finds all my
other devices fine, including the sound card. To make matters worse, it's not
confined to the 2.2.0 kernel. I tried to reconfigure a 2.0.36 kernel, and I get
the same errors. My working kernel is a 2.0.34 kernel, which detects the
ethercard at boot time at the right base io and irq. I'm running that to write
this message. Even still, when it boots it says:
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable
which is odd, because I'm onlinr right now. So, I also know that SIOCADDRT and
SIOCSIFADDR and the others are defined in /usr/include/linux/sockios.h. I don't
know if that's helpful or not. Why the error messages? How do I fix this?

Subject: lessons learned while setting up masquerading
Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 10:36:01 -0500
I am pleased to report that I finally got masquerading
to work last night at 23:55 EST. I want to thank everybody
who helped with all my questions.
In a feeble attempt to repay my karmic debt,
here is a brief list of some of the stuff I learned
along the way. I hope it helps the next poor bastard.
Some of this advice may be RedHat specific,
and some may be RedHat 5.1 specific. YMMV.
1. Disable PnP on your cards. Hand set the IRQs and addresses.
2. Cycle the power on your machine after changing card settings.
3. The kernel . . . .
Linux version 2.0.34 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 2.7.2.3) #1 Fri May 8
16:05:57 EDT 1998
. . . does contain masquerade support.
4. Don't try to tell the system which card to be eth0
and which to be eth1 on bootup. I tried all kinds
of boot-time options, and they were all ignored.
The card with the lower MAC got eth0, end of story.
5. The config files for the cards can be found at
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth?
The format of the files should be easy enough to suss out.
6. Make sure that forwarding is turned on.
Set FORWARD_IPV4=yes in
/etc/sysconfig/network
Doing this puts a value of 1 in the file
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
Alternatively, you can echo a "1" into the file by hand.
(That's a "one" not an "ell" but I think any non-zero works.)
7. ifconfig, route, and ipfwadm work pretty much as advertised
in the masquerading mini-HOWTO
8. Be persistent. Nothing is ever easy the first time you
do it, no matter how simple it all seems in retrospect.
Alright, you poor bastard, get to it! Good luck!

I've had two bourbons so I can do whatever I want.

No. That's one of the more bizarre bits of Microsquish proprietary
stuff. MS negotiates encryption within the Compression Control
Protocol (CCP) rather than as part of the standard Encryption Control
Protocol (ECP). I don't think anyone supports that.

It will create a ppplog.txt file if you enable logging in the
"advanced properties" page. Good luck ...
