Have you tried not giving any options except debug=5?

I expect it is an environment problem. Remember that when you run
things from cron, your login scripts do not get executed, so the full
environment is not created.

Try changing the cron entry from (for example):

30 * * * * /usr/blah/ppp-on

to:

30 * * * * . $HOME/.profile; /usr/blah/ppp-on

Hi. I have the typical reverse lookup problem.
My server tries to resolve names that has in /etc/hosts.
I have searched dejanews and followed some advises found
here but I still haven't succedded.
- I added entries for /etc/hosts
- I modifield the file /etc/nsswitch.conf
        It was like this :
                networks: files dns
                hosts: files dns
        I tried only
                files
        I tried
                files [NOTFOUND=return] dns
- I removed /etc/nsswitch.conf
- I added in /etc/hosts:
        order hosts, bind
        multi on

What else can I do ?

To get dhcpc working with the Intel card, which is mentioned in docs
and newsgroup as being difficult here, I simply downloaded dhcpcd
1.3.17-pl2 from sunsite. I solves a problem with 2.2.0 kernel and
another problem with that intel card.

I had another problem with letting the script start dhcpcd using
start-stop-daemon. Any options for dhcpcd would cause an
error message. I commented all those lines and just ran the
thing,

/sbin/dhcpcd -h username eth0

Well, with 4 and 8 port hubs going for about $10 or less
per port it would seem to be just as inexpensive to use a
hub without the extra trouble. In any case, two other sources
of information for you would be http://www.linuxrouter.org/
and http://www.freebsd.org/~picobsd/picobsd.html

I'm setting up my Redhat Linux 5.2 server to do POP3/SMTP so that I
can connect 10 Windows 95 workstations to it for email. It will
receive mail just fine and clients can retrieve their mail, however,
when you try to send a message, the server reports back to the POP3
client error 551 "we do not relay." I have added the ip addresses of
all workstations to the /etc/mail/ip_allow file. Any idea how to make
sendmail relay?? Or is this message really saying something else?

You have asked PPP to authenticate using PAP AND you specified that it use
your password file as well. This is okay, except you need to add an entry
to your /etc/pap-secrets file. Without it, PAP will fail and immediately
disconnect you. Also, if you use PAP, you'll never get a login
window...pppd will use the settings you provide in the DUN setup box.

The entry in pap-secrets should look like:

client_name * thesecret *

I would recommend that you add the following options to your options file as
well. I put all of mine in options.ttyS1

asynchmap 0
require-pap
ms-dns aaa:bbb:ccc:ddd
ms-dns xxx:yyy:zzz:qqq

My detach option also looks like -detach rather than detach. Don't know if
it makes a difference or not.
The ms-dns lines are important as Windows95 needs to have the address of a
DNS server. You only need one (and two is max).

Also, in /etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.conf, find the line that reads /AutoPPP/
and uncomment it.

HTH!

I've been beating my head against a larg wall on this.

NIC - Microdyne NE10/100 ISA
I/O = 0x300
IRQ=9

I've tried every driver available to me on RedHat (approx 10/18/98 build date) and
can't find any driver that will recognize that the card is there. DOS msnet
connector finds it just fine.

No Plug & Pray, card config prog says it's actually at that address.

SMC WD8013 is installed and working fine.

Anyone have a suggestion?

e-mail is real, please use it if you can help.

This is because (when the interrupt is set incorrectly or without one) the
kernel will poll the device rather than use interrupt lines. Polling occurs
at regular intervals - you have to wait for these intervals rather than the
serial port being able to interrupt the kernel directly - hence the delay.

Better yet, set them up correctly in the configuration file. (Ack... its
aftert pumpkin hour, sorry I cannot remember which one it is)

You should just be able to (as root) run netcfg (something like that)
from the control panel, then set up the interface so anyone can use it.

Then run usernet as a normal user to connect.

This was for RH5.0, but I don't use it any more.

Now you know for a fact that it can work, I would advise you try for
what I have just described.

hi,

I've got a linux box configured as a router between a Token Ring Network

I've properly configured the DNS on the linux box (nslookup works fine).
when I use telnet from the VAX/VMS network to the linux box ,it's ok,
the router responds quickly, but when I want to telnet from one client
of the Token ring Network to the linux box, the connection takes very
long time to establish...(whatever i telnet with hostname or IP
address).
What are the possibles causes ?

Thanks.

I've tried putting the statement in the syslog.conf file

This is the output written to the /var/log/debug file

first if I enclose the name in quotes (ie. name "Internet.****.****")
in the options file

Jan 29 22:47:52 localhost pppd[307]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <magic 0x7abd>
<pcomp> <accomp>]
Jan 29 22:47:58 localhost last message repeated 2 times

and second if I omit the quotes (ie. name Internet.****.****)

Jan 29 22:52:10 localhost pppd[321]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <magic
0xffff9202> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Jan 29 22:52:16 localhost last message repeated 2 times

I had the same problem with the .rpm version. It's version 5.0.0.35, while the
regular tar.gz package is 5.0.0.45, it fixed the 100% cpu problem for me.

One thing I did notice was that if you go into the help menu, click About,
then Check for upgrade availiblity, it will tell you there is no upgrade
available, click OK, and the CPU usage drops back to normal from 100% ...

One problem with the .45 tgz package is that it is libc5, if you have a
glibc Netscape you cannot use it as a plugin ...

Could someone pls help me with this : How to configure dhcpcd in Redhat 5.2
for tokenring connection ? I have read the howto doc and if mention that I
need to download some patch in para 3.7. But the web page is not found when I
click on it. I have no problem using static address for the tokenring
connection currently. Please let me know where I can download the patch and
the step by step procedure of configuring dhcpcd. I am very new to linux or
unix world. Just sent one week downloading the whole redhat ftp directory.
Thank you in advance.
