Hmmm -
So far, while all the messages have been very helpful, I don't think
anyone's answered the meat of this original question (which happens to be
one I'm interested in finding out about) - How would you set up a full
Linux box (not a mini-distribution) to route TCP/IP traffic from a small
home TCP/IP network over a cable modem connection (or in my case, a
dial-up ISDN connection) to the rest of the world?

Do you have Lucifer in your /etc/hosts file? If not, then satant can't resolve
Lucifer's IP
number. If you try doing a: smbclient -L <ip of lucifer> that might work...
I dunno.. just a guess.

I'm writting client application on Linux (Slackware 2.0.35) and I'm

how can I get the TTL field from the DDNS ? Is there any
'gethostbyname-like'

Ryan,
I have a working ppp but I downloaded your scripts for a
roadtest. I went through the configuration and ran it. The
result was - from messags:
================================================
ppp 2.3.5 started by root, uid 0
speed 7 not supported
/etc/ppp/pppscript -- open failed: No such file
Connect script failed
Exit.
=================================================
Your script assumes /etc/ppp/pppscript which does not
exist. Does this script depend of the type of linux or
release i.e. dependencies?

Hi!
I have two computers:
1) 80286 running Minix 2.0.0.
2) Pentium running Linux 2.0.36 (RedHat 5.2).
The Linux machine has an ethernet connection an external network.
Now I want to connect the Minix and Linux machines, using a
null modem cable and TCP.
I would like to be able to make external connections from both
as well as login in from any of the machines to the other.
My problem is: Where do I find information about how to do this?

IF you purchase additional IPs from your provider it will work with
your proposed setup. However, if you only have a single IP from
your provider you need a way to share the single IP among your
network.
>Also, I'm running Windows 98, Linux, and Solaris on my computer.

Yes, you can use it with Linux and Solaris. As far as they are
concerned, the cable modem is invisible and it's just an IP
destination through your network. In fact, using a cable modem
with Linux (and probably Solaris) is MUCH easier than using a
dial up PPP connection.
The following site will give you a good understanding of what you
need to do:
http://www.timhiggins.com/ppd/sharing.htm
You can use a Windows based product, such as Sygate
www.sygate.com which costs about $50 for your situation, or you
can utilize your Linux box and set it up for IP masquerading.
Go to the various Linux How-To sites and look up IP Masquerading
or read about it here:

First off can you configure your editor to automatically wrap around at 75
or characters?
If you have SHH configured and are using without problems you:
1) Start up X Windows
2) open an xterm
3) ssh to the machine you want and login
4) run the X program you want to use.
SSH automagically changes the DISPLAY variable around and forwards the X
connections around. Or at least it does on the two machines that I have
networked at home. You can ask more questions on comp.security.ssh.

Hi Folks,
after compiling a kernel (2.2.1 / 2.0.36) I got speed problems when
connecting to the internet. I'm using a standalone PC with an external

/etc/ppp/options doesn't change anything.
Here is the output of ifconfig:

search for dynamic dns under the appindex- there's lots of stuff
take a look at DyDNS and NED and mkrdns and GnuDIP
one of or a combination of the above should do the trick

Well I have solved the problem ... almost.
I recieved some help from the RedHat list. It looks like mail is broke in
RedHat 5.0 at least broke with respect to sendmail interaction. I tried
doing a
libros% mail username
where username was another valid user on the same machine. This failed
with the message winding up in /var/tmp/dead.letter. Sniffing around
comp.os.linux.networking it looks like the mail program in RedHat 5.0 is
broke.
Adding the lines
FEATURE(local_procmail)dnl
MAILER(procmail)dnl
to my m4 local.mc file and regnerating my sendmail.cf file now sets
procmail as the local MDA. This now delivers
all mail to username and [EMAIL PROTECTED] (libros is the
hostname). What still fails is mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Does anyone know how I can now tell the sendmail/procmail system that mail
for
[EMAIL PROTECTED] should be delivered to the username on the local
hostname libros? If I can solve this I am there.
Thanks for your help so far.

I will assume that you have the account guest active. Otherwise use an account
other than root. Then try this
1. telnet from NT and login as guest
2. goto the Linux box and login as root.
3. Type the command
w
4. You will see a listing of users connected to the Linux box. Look at the entry
TTY for the guest user. This will look something like ttyp0, depending on the
type of connection that you have between Windows and Linux.
5. edit the file /etc/securetty
6. in /etc/securetty add the line ttyp0 (or whatever was displayed as the TTY in
the w command above for the guest user) to the list of terminals showing in the
file.
7.eExit and save the file
8. close your telnet session
9. Reconnect from telnet and try to log in as root.

with 2.2.0 kernels and above, ipautofw and ipportfw are
obsolete... you need to download and install ipmasqadm
(you can get it at http://juanjox.linuxhq.com/ )... then
you can use whatever command you used before, except
replace "ipautofw" with "ipmasqadm autofw".

G'day Andrew and all...
Ack...! This really is a bad security hole!
If someone connects to the box, when the telnet client on the NT box isn't
telnetted in (or if for some reason, the telnet client on the NT box isn't assigned
the same ttyp). (Let alone whatever other holes it may open.)
Here's a much better (and secure) solution. =)
Telnet into the Linux box as a regular user. Use 'su' or 'su -' to login as root.
('su -' will login you in as root with all of root's environmental variables set,
rather than the su'ing user's.)
All the best...
Michael. =)

: Do you have Lucifer in your /etc/hosts file? If not, then satan can't
: resolve Lucifer's IP number. If you try doing a: smbclient -L <ip of
: lucifer> that might work...
:
: I dunno.. just a guess.
thanks, matt. guesses are what i need. lucifer was not in /etc/hosts,
so i added him. here is the contents of the file:
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.0.2 lucifer lucifer.demon
is this correct? 127.0.0.1 is loopback, right? is this what /etc/hosts
should look like?
also, the error message is confusing:
# smbclient -L lucifer
Added interface ip=127.0.0.1 bcast=127.255.255.255 nmask=255.0.0.0
startlmhosts: Can't open lmhosts file /etc/lmhosts. Error was No such file or directory
what is lmhosts? i never heard of it before and it's not in the samba man
page.

Subject: Re: How can I add pkg into linux via glint ?
Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 20:54:24 GMT
You shouldn't have to point anything anywhere. Just mount the cdrom
with: mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom (assuming /dev/hdc is your cd-rom)
Then run glint.
Actually, rather than use glint, I like to install packages from the
command line with RPM. Mount the CD as above, then cd
/mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS (or SRPMS, whatever).
Type: rpm -Uvh <packagename>
If the package is already istalled it'll tell you.,
rpm -e <packagename> will remove a package.
The redhat manual has some info on rpm command line options. Hope
this helps.
