What is best for dial-in agetty, mgetty or uugetty? Why? Which is easiest?
Which is best documented?

What are the possible manifestation of NIC failure (not cable, hub,
...)? I think:
1. Stopped receive or/and transmit - there is eth device in kernel
table.
2. Stopped receive and transmit - there isn't eth device in kernel
table.
3. OS is down, machine freeze.
If anyone has had experience with NIC failure, any comment are
welcome.

Look at NET-3-HOWTO. Are both machines domains the same?
What is in Control Pannes, Networkconfiguration, Hosts and are
those names in hosts? Do the hosts, lmhosts and network files in
c:\windows match the definitions on /etc/hosts etc.? Is there a
domain listed on 98 for nbtstat -n that matchs the domain on
Linux?
Straightening out the above will get you on your way to seeing
the icon but you probably want to click on it and see folders?
See Samba-HOWTO. If you have installed it then 9/10's of the
work is done. See /etc/smb.conf and work your way through it and
reference the HOWTO for specific answers. Not mentioned much is
setting up Samba passwords. See man smbpasswd. The next problem
is encryption. Both machines must match - see HOWTO and
smb.conf.
Again the above may be helpful to getting the Icon and
clicking on it to see disks etc but not getting further to be
able to login to 98. I can login in from 98 to Linux and other
NT machines but not the other way - NT to the 98 machine. I'm
not sure if 98 can do remote logins, ftp or tenet without some
third party package. You can do this going out but I'm not sure
if it accepts anything coming in without outside support.

Root has the privilege to modify lots of things where guest does
not. Guest typically guest does not have the authority to su
to root.

:       'OK-+++\c-OK'   ATH0                            \

The timeout is caused by the lack of an OK response from the modem at
this point.

I would check on whether /dev/ttyS0 is the correct device node, and,
since minicom works, "ls -l /dev/modem" will show the device node to
which modem points (/dev/modem is usually a link to the real one that
is used by minicom). If this is OK then I would check to see if the
IRQ configured for /dev/ttyS0 is the same as the modem actually uses.
Executing the command "setserial /dev/ttyS0" at the command line will
show the configured IRQ. Determining the IRQ the modem actually uses
is up to you.

Another thing you might do is to replace the \rAT with ATZ or ATF or
ATF1 to reset the modem at the beginning of each ISP call. The \r
is not sent correctly, you will need to quote it: '\rAT' for the
carriage return to be sent - although the carraige return is not
really needed. This hasn't anything to do with the present problem.

: CONNECT '' \
: name:--name: $ACCOUNT \

:         >-->            ppp
: ** End of ppp-on-dialer

You may have to quote >-->, i.e., '>-->', since `>' is a special symbol
for redirection, but I'm not sure about this. Not related to the present
problem.

alright.

Can this be switched off somehow? I mean we have to same problem here in our
office and it causes a dialup every 15 minutes which costs us much money.

To understand the problem perhaps a little bit better, I'd like to add that only
one of our 4 windows clients shows this phenomenen.

Is it usual that I am not able to ping a aliased IP Address from the
machine where I configured IP-Aliasing ?

e.g.

eth0 192.168.100.1
eth0:1 192.168.100.2

While I'm logged in to "192.168.100.1" I can ping "192.168.100.1",
but am unable to do so for "192.168.100.2".
Pinging from another host to "192.168.100.2" works, so aliasing itself
works fine.

strange....

I have a Cabletron E2100 in the computer, so from the list I select e2100

Having major problems with telneting into a new linux box. Its really
really slow.

Spec of the machine
Pentium 75
110 Mb ram
4.3 gig hard drive

when working on the box itself everything seems fine, even telneting to
other boxes, but when trying to telnet in it takes forever. Any suggestions
on what I should look for.

hi there all,

does anyone know where to find the TCP DUMP program or libraries?

thanks to anyone who tries to help

: I've tried using an IBM Turbo ISA 16/4 NIC on an 16MBit/s Token-Ring
: network with Redhat 5.2. But without any luck so far.

There is Token-Ring mini HOWTO. Read it. If it doesn't help, subscribe
to the linux-tr mailing list and ask your question there.

Maybe it is a probklem with a wrong base adress or wrong IRQ.

Your problem is sort of vague.
1. you day your having problems telneting into a net linux box.
2. You can do it but its slow
3. Just doing work on this box the speed if fine.
4. Telneting to other boxes if fine.
5. ????? Then the questionable one. When trying to telnet in it
takes forever.

What are you doing? Is this telneting into the internet? What
is your setup
and where are you telneting to? What do see for tcpdump -nei
eth0 and
tcpdump -nei ppp0 if your using ppp. ??
Are you telneting from an intranet through a local server or
directly??

Subject: kppp configuration with iMac's internal modem
Date: Mon, 01 Feb 1999 19:28:24 +0400

Hello!

I have installed linux R4 on my iMac and would like to use email and the
web with
Netscape.
However I can't figure out how to configure kppp. I don't know what the
modem device is
for iMac's internal modem. i tried ttsy as I heard it worked for
PowerBook. I tried the
default setting. But I either got a message telling the modem was busy
(when I knew it
wasn't) or locked, or the kppp panel froze. What arguments should I use
to set my
account? Should I use PAP, CHAP or a script. What does this all mean?
What about configuration in Netscape? I see there are some default
settings which I tried
to change but Netscape kicked me out (news server unknown, username
missing when I
think I entered them properly) and froze.

As you can guess from my questions I'm completely ignorant about linux
and would hugely
appreciate some clear and explicit explanations.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have an answer for you, but
your idea seems very weird to me... (except you want to use this for your
own test's only)
How could people connect to your virtual www server if it has probably
after each reboot different IP addresses? (I don't even start talking about
IP-DNS mapping...)
