Do you either have password encrypting on in Samba, or plain passwords in

Could someone tell me how to establish a PPP connection to my ISP.
I'm not sure if i need to use the "pppd" or something.
One more thing.
I'm using an internal modem configured on COM3 but using irq 5.
How do i get linux to recognize my modem.
Thanks!!!!

The 3com 3c509 That I used in a recent install went in fine using the Red
Hat 5.2 installer. What you might want to try doing is running the NIC dos
based setup program (3c5x9cfg) and set it to an assigned address/IRQ instead
of operating in plug and pray mode. Try something like address: 300h and
IRQ:10. You may need to run the 3com pnp disable file. Called something
like pnpdsabl.bat or something like that.

Thanks for calling my attention to dmesg. No machines are not
identical, nor are NICs. dmesg's seem to confirm that the good machine
is good (talks about the NIC and the driver) and the other one isn't
(doesn't mention it).
The 2 dmesg files are at the bottom of this message. Please let me
know if any obvious clues reveal what I should try. Thanks.

So you did a make, then make install right? is there a configure option that
comes with that source also? you know ./configure .. also you might need to
double check that you have your kernel compiled with modular support . i had
that problem when updating DHCP .. :)

Subject: Samba vs Windows Explorer directory names
Hello,
I've been having a problem with my Samba/Win9x setup. Whenever I
rename a directory on one of my shares to the same name but with
the capitalisation changed, I cannot see into that directory with
the Windows Explorer anymore. So if I rename a directory 'data'
into 'Data', I can see the changed directory name when I update my
view with F5 but going in it shows that the directory is empty. If
I then rename this directory back to the original name the files
inside reappear again.
I have a feeling that this is some sort of Explorer caching issue,
because if I either A) reboot my Windows machine or B) restart my
SMB service on the Linux machine (forcing an Explorer reconnect)
after changing a directory name then I can also see the filenames
inside the new directory name.
Renaming a normal file file1.c to File1.c works okay, only
directory names are affected, whether or not those directory names
conform to 8.3 DOS naming standards. Changing directory names on
another Windows machine also works okay, only the Samba server
shows this behaviour.
This happens whether I change the capitalisation of the directory
name in the Windows Explorer, on the Linux command prompt with mv
or in a DOS box with MOVE. It happens from a Win98 client as well
as a Win95 OSR2 one. Both machines have 'Allow all uppercase names'
turned ON in Explorer->View->Folder Options->View Tab, as well as
'Show all files'.
Possibly relevant excerpts from the /etc/smb.conf file:
preserve case = yes
short preserve case = yes
# Default case is normally upper case for all DOS files
default case = lower
# Be very careful with case sensitivity - it can break things!
case sensitive = no
mangle case = no
mangled names = yes
character set = iso8859-1
dos filetimes = yes
dos filetime resolution = yes
I have tried other options for 'mangle case' and most others, this
seems to work best for most purposes. Should I be going to 'case
sensitive = yes' now that the Explorer has the 'Allow all
uppercase names' option? I seem to lose access to my non 8.3
directories if I use that. I'd like to keep using the shared
filespace both over SMB as well as for local users on the Linux
machine.
Thanks for any insights, apologies if yours should not be the best
forum for this message.

Subject: Gateway Configuration
Date: Tue, 02 Feb 1999 09:22:56 GMT
Hi,
I have the following scenario :-
ppp internet connection with assigned range of ip's 192.168.0.40 through to
192.168.0.47. The ppp 'device' is sitting on 192.168.0.41 and the machines
ethernet card is on 192.168.0.42, with the default gateway set out onto the
net. The netmask is set to 255.255.255.248 for both devices.
** I know these IP ad's are incorrect (and unsuitable!)
- I'm just using these as an example!! **
I have other machines on the ethernet side with assigned ip's in my allocated
range. I have no problems accessing the internet from the main gateway box or
connecting to the local machines. However, I cannot access the net from any of
the local machines - unless I run ip masquarading (which I wish to stop using
in order to have several machines handling different incoming services).
I know I'm missing something pretty obvious here - but I need a prod in the
right direction!,
Thanks!,
Steve.

Ever thought about running both IP and IPX protcoll stacks and both
Netware and Microsoft clients? This will work without a doubt.
I've done this and never had any problems with it.
You might also wanna think about installing marsnwe this emulates a
netware 3.12 server. Than you can do every thing with IPX. (well
everything filr and printerserving).

I tried a $9 SOHO ISA card, but it came with PCI software that did not=20
recognize it. So I took it back and got another one with ISA=20
software. It's software couldn't find its own NIC either. You get=20
what you pay for.
So I took that back and got a $20 SMC card that worked.
