A warning for anyone installing linux for the first time who has an ISP that
supports users receiving e-mail via SMTP (aswell as, or instead of POP3) -
Demon Internet being a prime example:
The RedHat 5.2 installation (and others), by default, runs sendmail at
startup. This will cause you a problem if you haven't set up users on Linux
that correspond to the e-mail addresses at which people send you e-mail - as
soon as you connect, sendmail swings into action and receives all waiting
mail via SMTP but it will bounce all mail for users it doesn't know about
which is probably all of them (unless your e-mail address is
[EMAIL PROTECTED]!).
eg: my e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED], mab is not set up as a user
on my linux system so all e-mail to mab gets bounced (not anymore!).
The thing do to, especially if you want to use POP3 to recieve your e-mail
(like I do) is just to remove sendmail from the startup files.
I only lost about 10 e-mails because of this - hopefully this will help
someone else to not lose any.
Michael.

What I do is to create a dial-in account on the Linux server in which the
user's shell is a script to startup PPP after they login. Then you can
put whatever options make sense on the command line.

Cron runs with a very limited environment, so make sure that you=20
specify any PATH you need or use full paths for everything. And don't=20
expect it to know where '~' is.

Subject: using redirect
Date: Fri, 05 Feb 1999 16:02:28 +0100
Hello,
perhaps someone could help
me.
I want to setup an Application Level Firewall with transparent
proxies.
So I installed two ethernet cards (eth0 and eth1) on my Linux System
running Kernel
2.2.0.
I configured the kernel to use transparent proxy Support and
Firewall.
After that I used ipchains to redirect all the traffic comming from
the
internel ethernetdevice to my firewall on a special TCP Port (example:
when
using Port 23 it is redirected to port
9023).
It only works, when enable ip_forwarding, but I do not want to enable
it.
I
will do the hole work via my Proxy
Application.
My question
is:
Is it right that (port) redirecting only works
when
enable ip_forwarding? Or is something wrog with my
configuration.
If it does not work, how can I implement such a transparent
firewall?
(How can I use / setup the Linux Kernel to redirect the ip packet to an
other Port
on
my local
machine)
Greetings

I have the same problem with 2.2.0. The modified dhcp (rrdhcpcd) would get the
IP address just fine but it wouldn't do any name server lookup because of bad
routing entries. I could ping the gateway machine but nothing else. I manually
added in route add default gw 24.93.54.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 (which was just a
guess) and then hey presto! everything was fine and dandy. It looks to me like
dhcpcd doesn't initialize routing properly. Any ideas?

I have heard that I can select the PCI NE2000 card to drive a RealTek 8019
10BASET card, but this card is configured as plug-and-play. The machine is
triple booting between Linux, Windows 95 and BackOffice Small Business Server.
If I add no new hardware to the box will the pnp settings of Windows 95 and BO
SBS remain the settings for the NIC? (I haven't checked to see if they change
between 95 and BO yet).
If not has anyone actually created a driver for this NIC (surprising if they
haven't as they are one of the top selling cards in the World.

It could be an IRQ conflict with a motherboard serial port or nic. =20
Check what the other devices are using and check jumper settings on=20
the modem.
If instructions for the modem mention RPI or fail to list AT codes for=20
hardware compression and error correction, you may have to force 9600,=20
because it will not work faster than that without special software. =20
Also, due to lack of error correction, RPI modems will likely not be=20
able to connect to any 28.8K or faster modem at all.

Try adding the following to /etc/conf.modules:
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
Without these ppp would still work fine, you just wouldn't get the
advantage of the ppp compression schemes that may or not be available
through your ISP in any case.

Subject: Linux/W95 Network

I couldn't find an answer to this problem on these forums, so here goes...
I've got RedHat 5.2 installed on one machine talking to a Windows 95 box over
Fast-Ethernet. I can ping from Linux to W95 using it's name or IP address. I
can ping from W95 to Linux using the IP address. If I ping from W95 using the
Linux machine name, the W95 box tries to dial my ISP. If I cancel that
dialog, then the ping works. I'm pretty sure I have the W95 HOSTS file set up
right. However, if I rename the Hosts file to something else, the ISP doesn't
get dialed. But then the ping to Linux by name won't work. Also, if I try to
dialup my ISP, it tries to resolve the connection through the Ethernet
connection, and eventually craps out, unless I rename the Hosts file again.
How do I keep W95 from dialing the ISP, and vice versa, while leaving the
Hosts file intact? Is there a DNS problem here?

Okay I'm stumped... I've got 3 nics in my computer... one 3c905b and 2
lance cards... I had them running together find under the 2.0 kernels
using the editing of drivers/net/Space.c to let the kernel autodetect
them. But after I upgraded to the 2.2 kernel linux isn't detecting my
lance cards properly. Both eth1 and eth2 show as the same nic with the
same hardware address/irc/io/dma and the 2nd card is nowhere to be
found. I've tried both methods for multiple nics, editing Space.c
(changed a little bit for 2.2) and kernel boottime command lines.
Neither works. Any suggestions here?

Yes, the kernel will automatically perform forwarding of TCP/IP
packets if it has support for IP forwarding compiled in and IP
forwarding is enabled. RedHat systems require you to 'echo' a '1' to
the appropriate 'file' in the /proc/ hierarchy. I'm on a SuSE system
and the 'file' is /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward, so I'd use the
command 'echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward'. I don't have to,
however.
Should you have any more problems, feel free to email me. My newsfeed
is very flakey, so I probably won't see all responses to this group.

Two? It only creates interface sl0 on my box.

Yes. You may want to create entries in your /etc/hosts file for these
two addresses, otherwise they'll prompt DNS queries. You probably want
these addresses to be different from one another, incidentally.. this
could be the cause of your problem..

Does your diald.conf include the line:
mode ppp
?

You may want to modify the addresses in diald.conf to ones that aren't
valid for your LAN, such as 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.2.2.
