That would be collusion and restraint of trade but...

Personally I think they are in muddy regulatory waters but it seems that a
telco owned ISP can restrict it's services to a narrow range of hardware
and software. Sometimes it seems the PUC's have forgotten about the
Carterphone decision. Nevertheless, the phone company cannot restrict it's
service to any one OS or hardware platform. As long as the CPE equipment
meets the electrical requirements of the telco hardware, they must allow
you to connect.

However, the telco is not required to provide an Internet connection --
that must come from an ISP and the telco's own ISP can be just a
narrow-minded as they like. The telco is required to make the service
available to other ISP's under the same conditions and prices as they make
it available to their own ISP.

You might want to raise the issue with your State PUC. One letter probably
wont do any good but if enough people complain, the PUC (being a political
entity) will take notice.

I wonder what he means by 'binding'. In any case, the rule above is
not perfect. It uses a host address where a network address should be
used and the netmask looks strange, though it may be correct, just
seems improbable.

Yes, that's a completely silly idea.

It should have been 192.168.2.0/24, most probably. It could have been
192.168.2.2/24 too, I think, and not made a difference. If his 22 bit
netmask is correct after all, it includes hosts from IP address
192.168.0.1 to 192.168.3.254 in one block, if I'm not mistaken.

I had trouble using the SMCEZ card to work. The install routine does not
recognize it.
Maybe it was due to the factory set PNP mode that needs to be disabled.
The SMZ drivers in redhat have the ultra prefix . I was not sure if it supported
the SMCEZ

Ram were you able to get the SMCEZ working after disabling PNP ?. Did you use
the SMC UltraEZ driver (smc-ultra.o)

That's flat-out ridiculous. How can MacOS crash anything? What "some
systems"? It's amazing how these people always think that working in a
computer-related firm grants them carte blanche to talk out of their ass

I have an old 486-PCI machine and a new SN3200
(realtek) PCI NIC.

/proc/PCI lists the card as device #3 so it was found.

The ne2k-pci driver is compiled into the kernel and during
bootup it displays an identifying message with a URL
and everything is OK.

However, the bootup script (as much as I can see as it
flies by--I don't get a dmsg file...just an unreadable 'kmsg'
one) never shows a device eth0 as being recognized.
Nor does the card show up in the IO listings or anywhere
else for that matter.

Any clues? I've been reading HOWTOs and this newgroup
for weeks and trying new things. I'm kinda stuck on this one
though.

Thanks in advance,

Shawn

You just need to get the newer 2.3.5 version of ppp. There is an RPM for
it on the redhat site, I dont recall the address though. If you have
trouble with the config files, let me know I can send you a copy of

I'm using Sniffit (lastest beta off the sniffit page) to capture
packets on my RedHat 5.2 Firewall. The program works fine for capturing

packets that come directly to or from the firewall (ex. Telnet) but not
for any of the packets that are masqueraded through the firewall.
The server is used to provide internet access for our 80 user LAN
and I am trying to use sniffit it so we can monitor web traffic to see
if anyone is surfing where they shouldn't be. Right now sniffit
captures everything on the 192.168.1.0 net. Why don't I get masqueraded

packets? Is it maybe because sniffit uses the internal network
interface (as opposed to the card that is on the external side of the
firewall)?
Any help would be most appreciated.
