Hi all..

Just a quick (I hope) problem...I am using elm to send email over a
dial up ppp connection, and using fetchmail to retrieve it again (I
like xbiff)..how can I change what elm puts as the reply to address?
at the moment it puts either root@localhost or bill@localhost
depending on what I log in as, and I would like it to put my correct
email address instead...
Thanks

I am setting up a Redhat 5.2 linux box as a web/ftp server. I am using an
SMC EtherEZ ISA card. I have used this card on dozens of Linux Installs
with no problems at all. In fact I installed linux on this machine using
this card via FTP. I have never seen the error message SCIOCADDRT: Invalid
Argument before... any help would be appriciated.

Things that changed since the card last worked:
The card was originaly setup to using DHCP, It now uses a static IP.

Linux was installed while the machine was on another network than the one on
which it currently resides.

My users were being flummoxed by repeated appearance of eth0 error
messages
in the middle of edit sessions and at other times as well. I posted the
problem
and I'd like to post the solution:
edit the /etc/rc.d/inet2 file to add an option to the klogd invocation,
thus:
    klogd -c 3
This raises the priority required in order for error messages to be
displayed on
the consoles. It works! My users are much happier now.

i see two ethernet cards in one linux box, plug the T1 into one of them,
that's the default route. plug the other one into the hub along with the
other computers. setup ipmasq for 192.168 and a special route for your
other linux box(to the local ethernet card as opposed to the one with
the T1). linux box with the T1 becomes the gateway for all computers.
the box with the T1 would also have to do proxy arp for the other linux
box.

only one hub, one less ethernet card.

alternatively you could plug the T1 into the hub with all computers(one
ethernet card in each). forget proxy arp, still do ipmasq, i think the
router on the other end of the T1 will just ignore 192.168 packets. the
local network
would then compete with the throughput of your T1 though(ie transfering
file
from winA to winB would compete with linA through T1 because there on
the same
hub).

only one hub, and two less ethernet cards.

your way would work too.

Hello,

I've attached the source code for my ping-like program. The program
doesn't work properly. Theoretically,
socket(AF_INET,SOCK_RAW,IPPROTO_ICMP) should create an ICMP protocol
socket, where kernel adds the IP wrapping.

Only my gateway replies in some manner to my pinging. It returns ICMP
packets of type 3 (error) and code 2 (no protocol found, or something
similiar). If you'll take a look at the source code (it's not big, the
missing crc file is a standard crc calculation) you'll notice, that I do

not assign any ports to src or dst addresses - I've tried and it didn't
work either. Binding the socket to the local address doesn't change
anything. I'm just running in circles here - if anybody knows why this
doesn't work, please, help me. I've looked at the book by Stevens (unix
network programming) and this is where I took the basic solutions, and
the book says that they should work!

This is my icmp_hdr structure:

uchar type
uchar code
ushort crc
ushort id
ushort seq

the rt328_addr is the address of my router - only this device replies to
my pings (it's on the same network...), nothing gets through when I try
to ping altavista, for example. Is the packet construction incorrect ?

Thank you,

Martin

In /etc/sysconfig/network make sure you have a valid gateway.
If not, try changing these lines as follows:
GATEWAY=
GATEWAYDEV=

This worked for me, your mileage may vary.

Subject: Load Balancing Across Multiple IP's
Date: Sat, 13 Feb 1999 00:53:01 GMT

Hey Gang,

Right now, at home, I have a firewall/masq/portfw linux (2.0.35) box
set up at home, and running perfectly. However, if I wanted to add 4
more IP's (an option for DSL), how would I set up my firewall
(generally, not specifically) *with out* having to specify every IP?

ex. If I have two computers going out to a web site on the internet,
with one external IP, they will share the ip.

Question:
1) If I add another IP (or 20 more), will Linux know to use the other
IPs accordingly? If not, then what would be the best way to do this?

2) If I wanted to set up a 'conduit' where *all* traffic goes to a
specific computer inside the firewall, what is the best way to do
that? From what I know, IPPORTFW will only do specific ports, and not
a block of ports... for example, to 'lock down' an external ip to a
specific ip to an internal machine (like a server).

Ideally, I would love for this to be as dynamic as possible with a few
minor changes, be able to set up conduits with minor effort.

Any help would be most appreciated... :-)

I've looked at the statistics since setting up aliasing on my system, and
it
appears that if you just look at in and out counts, all the aliased traffic
is credited
to the firewall address where the aliasing takes place. However, the
forwarding
rules also have counters attached, and if you put up a separate rule for
each
address that is being aliased, then I think you can get the counts that you
want.

Don't know about the Promise Fas Trak stuff, but I am using Netgear
FA310TX cards in my linux boxes.

You will need to copy the tulip.c file from the disk that comes with
the netgear card into /usr/src/linux/drivers/net and rebuild your
kernel. When you "make config" (after copying the file), make sure
you select the tulip driver. Good instructions are on the floppy disk
in the doc/linux directory. Good luck.

Check the resolv.conf file on the firewall and make sure it's pointed at
a valid internet name server. TIS uses the regular resolver to find IP
addresses.

It steps through the list of rules, starting at the top, and when it
finds a rule to match the packet it's examining, it stops and applies
that rule. If it can't find a rule to match the packet, the default
policy is applied.

Using the insert command (ipfwadm -i <policy>), you add a rule to the
top of the list. The append command (ipfwadm -a <policy>) adds a rule
to the end of the list.

I cannot find the documentation I need to setup a DNS to solve a reverse

Our university has a class B internet address. We use subnetting on
campus to manage network traffic, but all the departments except ours
use the same domain (uca.edu). Our computer science department has a
separate domain (cs.uca.edu) with a separate domain server. Forward name
lookups (names to IP addresses) works fine. But the inverse lookups (IP
address to name) does not work (from off campus). What entry needs to go
in the uca.edu domain server reverse mapping file to make it ask our
"lower" domain server to do the reverse mapping correctly? A diagram
follows.

little success.

31.31.161.in-addr.arpa. IN NS keeper.cs.uca.edu.

I need an entry in the reverse mapping table that tells the "uca.edu"
name server that 161.31.31.* addresses are resolved by the "cs.uca.edu"
name server.

Subject: smbmount "wears off"
Date: 13 Feb 1999 01:36:57 GMT

Yes, it sounds odd, but that seems to be what's happening.

I didn't have this problem with 2.0.36, only 2.2.0-preX and 2.2.1. I
downloaded Samba 2.0, compiled the smb utilties and installed them.
Everything seems to work perfectly... better than in 2.0.36 at any rate. I
have a Win95 share that I wanted to mount, so here is what I type:

smbmount '\\forge\win95' -I 192.168.1.2 -c 'mount /dosc -u 504 -g 500 -f 0770'

This mounts the share on /dosc, and everything seems to work:

doing parameter password level = 7
doing parameter workgroup = WORKGROUP
doing parameter comment = RedHat Samba Server
doing parameter volume = RedHat4
doing parameter hosts allow = 192.168.1.2 192.168.1.1
doing parameter printing = bsd
doing parameter printcap name = /etc/printcap
doing parameter load printers = yes
doing parameter log file = /var/log/samba-log.%m
doing parameter max log size = 50
doing parameter short preserve case = yes
doing parameter preserve case = yes
doing parameter lock directory = /var/lock/samba
doing parameter locking = yes
doing parameter strict locking = yes
doing parameter share modes = yes
doing parameter security = user
doing parameter socket options = TCP_NODELAY
doing parameter os level = 33
doing parameter domain master = yes
doing parameter domain logons = yes
doing parameter logon script = scripts\user.bat
doing parameter wins support = yes
pm_process() returned Yes
Added interface ip=209.79.196.118 bcast=209.79.196.118
nmask=255.255.255.255
Opening sockets
Connecting to 192.168.1.2 at port 139

max mux 2
max vcs 1
max raw 65536
capabilities 0x203
Sec mode 514
max xmt 2920
Got 8 byte crypt key
Chose protocol [NT LM 0.12]
Server time is Fri Feb 12 17:14:34 1999
Timezone is UTC-8.0
security=share
Connected with cnum=59392 max_xmit=2920
mount command: smbmnt /dosc -s //FORGE/WIN95 -u 504 -g 500 -f 0770

And yipee, I can access the smb share, read write, etc. The problem lies
in that the mount seems to "wear off" after some unspecified period. It no
longer shows up in "df" (though "cat /proc/mount" shows it to be mounted),
and any attempts to access the share (cd, opening files, reading dir
listings) yields an "Input/Output Error."

An odder problem is that this seems to interfere with the ability to start
a new shell:

ppp-209-79-196-179:~$ sh
shell-init: could not get current directory:
job-working-directory: could not get current directory: (d
@(d
@tall.txt
job-working-directory: could not get current directory: (d
@(d
@
pwd: could not get current directory: (d
@(d
@s.fur.com
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Nothing in my path or profile uses the SMB share, nor was I starting up a
new shell in that directory. Yet something seems to get screwed up in the
kernel when this happens. If I umount /dosc, everything is fine once
again.

Any ideas?
