I have 1 email address for the whole family. Is there a way fetchmail might
read a prefix to the email address and then route it to the seperate
account?..
ie.. pine allows me to type in the Nickname and get the nickname + the email
address NickName <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Subject: Problem with ethernet card using Ip masquerade
Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 05:33:03 GMT
Hi all,
I've got a strange problem with one of my ethernet cards. I've got a Redhat
5.2 installation (out of the box) running on a 486DX4-100 using two ethernet
cards. Eth0 is connected to a cable modem and eth1 to my internal network.
Both cards are generic isa PnP NE2000 compatible cards running with the ne.o
module. I have IP masq setup to use my Win95 box to access the internet
through this box. The internal network uses 10base-T with a 4 port hub to
connect the Win95 machine to the Linux box. The only addition to the 5.2
install was the perl script to logon to the RoadRunner isp with the cable
modem.
I have it working and I can use a browser from the 95 box, and ping out,
etc.. The problem is, when I try to configure Collabra on the 95 box and
subscribe to newsgroups, it starts downloading the newgroups list and gets
about 3/4 of the way through and then it seems eth1 on the Linux box craps
out and error messages start scolling across the console on that machine. I
can read these two lines;
eth1: mismatched read page pointers 0 vs ff
eth1: unexpected TX-done interrupt, lasttx=10 (sometimes it says 20)
I have no idea what this means, but it happens every time and I have to kill
the cable modem to regain control of the console. Then I have to stop eth1
and restart it before it will work again. I'd been using RedHat 4.2 and Ip
masq on the same rig with kernel 2.0.32 and never had any problems like this.
The only difference then was I was using a 28.8 modem instead of the cable
modem . Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rick

I'm fairly new to Linux and am having a problem connecting from Linux to
NT4.0 workstation. I can ping in both directions. I can connect from NT
to Linux and the Apache server displays on the Netscape screen but can't
go from Linux to NT this way. I can ping succesfully in both directions
so know that the NT box is capable of seeing the connection. In NTs
network neighboorhood I can access my 'public' (/home/samba)directory on
the Linux box.
>From a previous message I made a registry change in NT to allow
non-encrypted passwords but this has not helped.
The message displayed by Linux when attempting to connect is "Netscapes
network connection was refused by the server 10.10.10.4. The server may
not be accepting connections or may be busy". I know that the NT
workstation is accepting connections because I hooked a Win95 portable
up to the hub and was able to communicate with the NT box in both
directions using Netscape, ftp and telnet. I suspect I have something
set wrong on the NT box but don't know what.
NT4.0 workstation

IP=10.10.10.4
'root' has a user account with admin priv's

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

i've posted a couple of times without success. i'm having difficulty
with my modem locking up on me. it usually happens during a disconnect.
i'll run my disconnect script and the modem just locks up. so far the
only solution i have found is powering down the computer. i always
thought that one of the beauties of linux was that you could avoid that.
i'm running red hat 5.2 with afterstep 1.6.6.
thanks for any help.

You have two identical ethernet cards, which is a small problem for the current
version of LILO. LILO currently quits looking for a certain type of card
after it has found the first one. You need to add an option to the LILO config
to get it to recognize that it should keep searching after finding the first card.
There is a FAQ question on this somewhere. Look in the boot options LDP,
which is installed on your RedHat system by default as part of the doc package.
The next part is a lot simpler.
Most cable companies do a database lookup when you ask for a dhcp connection, to
return the correct server info, ip address, etc. Unfortunately, the information
that they look up is your assigned machine name, and not the more normal MAC
address of the interface. This info is provided by Wondows, but not by stock
RedHat.
RedHat, as shipped, does not support the -h <machine name> parameter to the
dhcpcd daemon. Upgrade your RedHat to the latest patches. One of these is an
upgrade to dhcpcd-0.70 rpm, which DOES support the new option.
There are two scripts that you have to alter, to add the new option:
/sbin/ifup and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup
Add the new -h option in the obvious manner, and you're all set.
Configure the appropriate ethernet card for dhcp discovery, and either bring up
networking (/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start), or reboot the machine.
If everything is configured properly at the cable end (and I assume it is, since
you have a functional Windows connection), then it should come up.
The next thing to get going is masquerading, so that only one ip address is needed
to be visible to the cable head end for your internal network. Email me back
when the cable connection is up, and I can send you a simple configuration and
firewall script to get you up to snuff. Ok?

How do I receive a page from a WWW server using a C program?
I need to write a C program (under Linux) that send a request to a remote
WWW server for an .html or .cgi page and then receives that page. As far as
the remote server is concerned, my program would look like a WWW browser.
If you know how to send a request from a C program to a remote WWW server,
I'd be really grateful if you could tell me how, or point me in the right

You probably don't need to run a routing daemon if you're talking
about two subnets only, static routing is fine in that situation.

You need to do the following:
1. Recompile and install a kernel with IP forwarding enabled.
2. Set up your NICs (IP addresses, netmasks, etc.). *Both* the NICs.
3. Configure your routing table. Do this by editing /etc/route.conf in
a SuSE system. Tell me the addresses of your subnets and I'll give you
the lines you need to add to /etc/route.conf.

The SOCKS server comes with client libraries that replace the normal
networking libraries when you run a client program with the runsocks
script. I haven't been able to get them to work, however. Heard a
rumor that the 2.2 kernel includes SOCKS client support, but have not
been able to confirm it.

I'm having some hassles trying to dial-up to my ISP and I don't know where
the hassle actually *is*.
The modem makes the right noises, I pick up the phone and I get the right
noises. However, it won't recognize the DNS (I tried numbers from
www.internic.net and from calling ISP tech support). After so often, the
connection just dies and then chat or the pppd try to reconnect.
The ISP hookup HOWTO - which I've been alternately following, as sometimes I
tried using the RedHat GUI tools just out of desperation - says I'm supposed
to be able to spot error messages by using tail /var/advm/messages, but I
don't see a /var/adm.
How do I monitor the connection? For all I know, the ISP modem is asking my
modem why it's sending gobbledygoodk.
Thanks in advance.

Problem is, that my telnet connection takes over one minute before receiving
login sequence.
My win98 telnet program seems to connect very well, but nothing happens at
long time. After I get login prompt and when I login, all systems works
quite well.
In Linux machine telnet login to localhost is instant. As well win98

Also sending mail to localhost in Linux machine takes exactly same time
(over minute.)
What's wrong? I'm still quite newbie in Linux, but please help, because I

I've run into this using diald, but I can't say the same applies for
dynamic-PPP.
When using diald you have to add forwarding/masq rules for packets
forwarded to sl0 *in addition* to packets forwarded to ppp0. When the link
is down the default route points at sl0, so if you don't allow
forwarding/masq to that interface, diald will never see any client traffic
and won't bring the link up.
