Greetings,
Complete moron when it comes to networking, and trying to learn...
The situation: small, poor start-up firm; wants to give powerful
interactive web solutions on Linux platform. Large, active backend DB,
Firewall, Routers, Webserving, Dynamic Content Creation, etc. Would
like to use low-cost PCs to handle these tasks - rather than purchasing
an expensive server.
The questions:
Can a small Beowulf cluster be used in this situation?
If not, any recommendations?
If no recommended solutions, what material is available that I can learn
for myself?

check out the following link, a perl script (dhcp2dns) that parses the
dhcpd.leases file and updates your dns records with the info...I've used it
for a while and it works great...

Since the BeOS only supports PAP and my ISP supports CHAP and I don't want
to change ISP's, this is what I am thinking:
I will put the modem in my Linux box (486, 16MB ram) and access it through a
home LAN from my WIndows machine (Pentium 233, 64MB ram) and my Be machine
(Pentium 266, 96MB ram). Right now, the Linux box is set up for a
non-networked dial-up desktop use. I have SMC 10baseT cards for all the
machines.
So how do I set up my Linux box? Actually, what programs do I need to
install in Linux to network the other two to Linux? (I've already done a
peer to peer network between two WIndows machines using TCP/IP.) I recall
reading that others have used a similar setup to share a cable modem among
several home users, but don't know any details.
You don't have to provide configuration details; I can read the man pages
and HOWTOs, but point me in the general direction so I can read up on it and
get started. If I get lost, at least I'll have a better idea what to ask
about and where to look.

I am trying to use the Linksys Ether 16 cards to link my P75 and P200 together
for my kids. Both systems are running win98. Both computers show only
themselves in network neighborhood. Both pass their tests quickly. I have not

I am having a proble with my Red Hat 5.2 install (2.0.36) . I have to
run depmod -a and ifup eth0 to get my smc-ultra ( etherEZ ) card to be
recognized. Also when I do a depmod -a I get a sheetload of
unresolved symbols. I have read the previous postings and following
instructions such as :
mv /lib/modules/2.0.36 -> /lib/modules/2.0.36.old
make modules
make modules_install
- still the same problem occurs.

I had a box (kernel 2.0.36) with a local network, and it worked
perfectly. I was able to print on a distant box, to mount shared nfs
volumes and I used Samba ...
I compiled the 2.2.1 kernel and now when I do a route -n :

I tried to install the network back :
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig lo down
and I begin like in the O'Reilly's "Linux Network Administration"
ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 (ok)
route add 127.0.0.1 SIOCDDCART : operation not supported by this
peripheral (in french on my box).
I can't go further.
If I don't shut down the ethO and lo, I can ping other boxes, I can
print, but I can't mount nfs volume from other boxes. (nfs is supported
by my kernel).
I can mount nfs volumes that I share on my box from other boxes.
When I try to mount nfs volumes from my box, it produces RPC error, and
I know that PORTMAPPER needs lo interface to work.
Another information : I have RX and TX errors on both ethO and lo just
after boot.
During the boot, just after kerneld starts, two SIOCDDCART errors
appear. The same errors appear if I do network start, stop.
I heard that there is no more kerneld in the 2.2.1 kernel, why does it
still appear during the boot ?

Hello,
I'm new to Linux (red hat 5.1) and I'm having a hard time getting my
connection to my ISP to stick. I've tried the man's and howto's, but can't
figure it out.
I have an external ISDN 3com ImpactIQ modem on com1. I can dial into my ISP
from Minicom and one of my b channels connects at 64K, the modem to serial
is 115200. After about 10 sec's I get a no carrier response and the light
on the primary b channel on the modem goes out. I think there is a timeout
happening here either on my end or with my ISP because no login and password
have been transmitted.... I can't figure out how to "break" into the
connection in Minicom to get the login prompt.
I've tried setting up a ppp0 interface in Control Panel / Networking /
Interfaces using /dev/modem. I set the init string and other parameters
here with a little help from someone else who has a 3com ImpactIQ running on
Linux (with a different ISP). When I 'activate' the connection, nothing
happens!?! I thought that interface would connect to my ISP???
I would like to achieve two things, in order of importance...:
1. get connected on one channel at least
2. get the other channel to connect as well
If anyone has any clues, please help... I'm willing to call anyone who
provides a phone number via email if that makes it easier.

gethostbyname
in succession, but it seems like it's failing in the middle somewhere and
after it failed once it keeps on failing. I was suspecting that the DNS

has some sort of limit but if I restart the code it works fine again (up to

point where it fails again). Has anyone encountered this before? Is there
anyway
to get around this? I set up my own named with the same results.

In a previous place of employment, we (the IS department) used to name
all the new machines. We went though a phase of using body parts and
organs for machine names. One user got "colon" -- we had to tell him
we were naming machines after punctuation marks ...
One of my colleagues named an AIX system pita (it's an acronym -- she
din't like AIX at all).

I'm running a linux box as gateway to the internet. Since we pay our
provider in MB, I want to know how much data we're transfering from and
to the internet. My world device is an ethernet card being on the same
network as the cisco-isdn-router. I have no access to the router, cause
it belongs to our provider.
Is there any tool which can report me how much data has been transferred
over that ethernet device? Sure I can look at /proc/net/dev, but aren't
packets of variable size? If not, how large is a packet? And how can I
reset the counter without putting the device down?

Not quite true, you'd don't need NETBUI or IPX. Microsoft Network Client
and TCP/IP will work fine as long as the other WrkStns and Servers have
TCP/IP.

I tried to set up shadow password in a RedHat Linux 5.1 machine. I use
pwconv and it works fine. However after that I cannot login to the
machine. Interestingly, imap and pop login works.
I looked into the pam setup and it look fine:

The passwd program is part of package passwd-0.50-11
The pam package is pam-0.64-2
The shadow package is shadow-utils-980403-3
The Linus itself is RedHat Linus 5.1, with 2.0.34 kernel.
Do you have any idea on what's wrong?

Try /var/log for log files. If they aren't there, then create them with
echo -n > /var/log/messages and echo -n > /var/log/debug. Add
*.=info;*.=notice /usr/log/messages
*.=debug /usr/log/debug
to /etc/syslog.conf, and do
kill -1 `pidof syslogd`
to get syslogd to reread /etc/syslog.conf .
Oh, and make sure that the pppd option `debug' is configured and use
chat with `-v' .

I just saw the same problem in my pppd log only an hour ago. It was user
stupidity. My scripts and /etc files were fine, except I had changed my
password to login to the ISP, forgot to update the PASSWORD in ppp-on.
Maybe that's it?
