Subject: lots of domain traffic
Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 18:46:23 GMT

I am seeing constant traffic between my Linux box and the gateway
to which it's attached:

  02:43:53.915775 myhost.1680 > proxyserver.domain: 16547+ (43)
  02:43:53.935775 proxyserver.domain > myhost.1680: 16547 1/2/2 (166)
... lots of these lines ...

Any reason why I would be getting all this domain traffic when nothing
is really going on on the system? I use this box for a firewall/IP
masquerade, SMTP/POP3, & Apache, but when I do the tcpdump none are
being accessed.

Thanks.

Subject: Mojo Ain't Workin NFS Boot - PAM error
Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 10:40:12 +0000

I've rtfm'd till I'm blue in the face.

I'm trying to add a diskless workstation to my home network. It boots
fine. It does the DHCP and BOOTP stuff fine. It even mounts the root
dir via nfs FINE. Then I can't log in. It gives me a PAM warning and
sez it don't know who I am. I tried changin the etc/pam.d/login file of
the remote root dir, no help. I accidently changed my own
/etc/pam.d/login and screwed myownself having to boot "emergency rw" to
fix it. I've scanned this group for similar PAM issues and only came
upon Outlook probs.

I know the answer is simple, I just don't know it. I know the answer is
bound to be documented, I just don't know where to look. If anyone can
help me my kids would love it and deserve it. Also, it would make me
look and feel good to get their game machine happenin.

TIA and Cheers

Hello --

I'm wondering if anyone out in Netwareland has used a Linux mail server on a
Netware 4.11 or 5.0 network. Anyone interested in talking about that can email

I actually, for the first time, was able to get my W95 to see Linux in NN last
night. The change I made? See where it says

Get_Hostbyname: Unknown host WHL31

I was getting the same message when I ran TESTPARM. My Linux box's network
name was 'linux'. But the message I was getting was

Get_Hostbyname: Unknown host HOME

So I went into linuxconf, found where it called the box 'HOME', and changed it
to 'linux'. Voila! It worked. What clued me in was at the command line
prompt. It was 'root@home'. After the change, it became 'root@linux'. After
I restarted, I could see 'linux' in W95. Now I have a password problem, but
that's for another night. Hopefully, this helps...

I'd also mention that you're in the capital of a province just coming out
of recession, with a government about to hand down a budget in the red and
no other industries, really, around.

The reason that you're having trouble finding a job in Victoria is because
there probably aren't many, and the ones that you are fighting for, you
are fighting for against an oversupply of UVic graduates.

I would try to take a job as a tech and work your way up. One does not
become a programmer in a day. Open source experience (putting together
projects, learning internals) will help. So will, sad to say, getting at
least a couple of years in university. Even if it has nothing to do with
programming at all, the existence of some university makes a difference.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately no luck yet. Im stuck at 10mbps (hub
restriction) so Ive no idea if 100mbps will be any better.

Using insmod instead of modprobe showed no difference.

pinging the card ip results in a Network unreachable error.

Im using kernel 2.0.34. I guess its time to try a kernel upgrade!

Thanks,
Mark

Anyone have any experience getting a POP/IMAP mail server up and running
with LDAP as a central address for a corporate lan? I just want the LDAP
server to provide a centralized point for the main address book, so I don't
have to distribute a new one everytime someone new gets hired or leaves. If
you have any good on-line references or can reply with some sort of pointer
to good info on the bestway to do this and a SW package that seems to work
well together.

I'm using RH 5.2.

Hi can anyone give me some advice on 100 base network cards.
I was using epic100 based cards (SMC) when I had a 10-T network
but now that I have a 100-TX they occasionally hang and lose contact with
the kernel.

Does anyone have strong views on what network card is best.

You are right.

Xisp used simple PAP option of pppd 2.2.x and it's not supported by pppd

That's why I have to use PAP-secret now...

After setting up Samba on a RH5.0 box, I've never had a problem with
seeing my linux box in the network neighborhood of a 95 box. I believe I
also had no problems with NT, but it's been a long time since I did that!

Just me playing around. Actually, the crtscts was commented out but I
removed the # from my post without removing the crtscts. Either way it
doesn't work.

The weird thing is that 2.0.36 works with exactly the same configuration
- I boot into 2.2.1 not working, back to 2.0.36 without any changes
works fine.

Thanks anyway,

Having watched this newsgroup for awhile it seems that others might be
having this problem as well but I haven't seen anything that has helped
me.

The problem - after upgrading to Linux kernel 2.2.1 and pppd 2.3.5 my
PPP doesn't work. The chat script dials happily, connects and then dies
with 'LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests'. If I boot a 2.0.36 kernel
with the exact same pppd, libc (2.0.111) and config files it works fine
as it has for many months.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
