Good  morning,

    i am trying to set up my linux box as a router.  i need to put 3
NICs in it.  i have an SMC something based on the DEC 21040 chip, and
several (ISA) Racal NI6510 and HP 27247B's.  i need to use the SMC but
it doesn't matter if i use 2 Racals, 2 HPs or 1 of each.  The problem is
that when i boot only one of the ISA cards is picked up.  If i put two
HP's in only one is picked up (the one at irq 9; see below).  If i put
one Racal and one HP then only the HP is picked up, if i put in one HP
it is picked up, and if i put in one Racal it is picked up. i haven't
tried 2 Racals but i expect the same result (only one will be picked
up).  i have a multiboot system and boot to DOS to use the respective
configuration utilities to ensure that there are no conflicts.  i have
booted to win95 (eww) and verified at least that when i had two HP's in
everything got along and no conflicts existed.  Regardless of the
combination, whichever ISA NIC that gets picked up on booting Linux
works and the SMC works in all of the configurations.

Sooo, how do i get Linux to pick up the 3rd NIC?

i should add that i have a kernel with support for all three NIC's and
it is with this same kernel that i booted to all of the above
configurations.

The card configurations go like this
SMC irq 11 (the io address is not known but it works without conflict
with both of the following)
ISA card 1 irq 9 io 300
ISA card 2 irq 15 io 340

as i mentioned with SMC and either ISA card 1 _or_ ISA card 2 things are
good and both cards work fine, but if i put in the third card one of the
ISA's just doesn't work (although the SMC and other ISA NIC still work
fine).

i think that is all the info.
please let me know if there is something that i missed.

I'm a webmaster, and even the coolest packages out there can't do
exactly what you need all the time.  Matter of fact, I still have to
do most of the fine-tuning of the html code myself.  Without a good,
working basic knowledge of html, you can forget producing professional
pages consistently.  Even with the best packages, the html needs to be
tweaked to make it user-specific.  But then again, I AM a
professional, and this guy obviously is not, nor will he ever be.

The protocal is probably sync-ppp, so you need a sync card.

When I try to mount nfs volumes from my box, it produces RPC error, and
I know that PORTMAPPER needs lo interface to work.


Another information : I have RX and TX errors on both ethO and lo just
after boot.
During the boot, just after kerneld starts, two SIOCDDCART errors
appear. The same errors appear if I do network start, stop.

I heard that there is no more kerneld in the 2.2.1 kernel, why does it
still appear during the boot ?

one response saying it was an old bug and there's patches available.
I can only find patches for older kernels.  I'm using Linux 2.2.1 and
Samba 2.0.2.  Can anyone give me any more information?

Since I've installed the 2.2.1 Linux kernel and Samba 2.0.2 using
smbmount, when I mount an NT share to the Linux box my file dates are
getting trashed.  It doesn't seem to be affecting the integrity of the
files, just their dates.  Mounting the share doesn't affect it until I
attempt an 'ls' of the specific directory or subdirectory.

what's up?  Bug?

I had the SAME problem when I went from 2.0.30 to 2.0.36.  ppp-on would work
successfully only about one out of fifty tries.  Removing the \r corrected the
problem for me too.  I diagnosed the problem by looking at the messages on the
tail end of /var/adm/messages after attempting to start ppp.  I could see the
commands it was trying to send to the modem, but it kept getting an ALERT
message.  Oddly enough, this ONLY happened when using ppp-on and ppp-off.  When I
went through KDE's Kppp, I didn't have the problem.  However, KDE probably isn't
using the ppp-on-dialer script at all.

I administrate about 80 station, and we name like this

XXYYZZ where

XX is sun or hp or ...
YY is the admin service , for us cte
zz is a number  1 to 20 for sparc2, 21 to 40 for sparc 10 and so on,
so we have today
suncte3, suncte4, suncte10, ....

doing like this permit to came into the company DNS without problem as
each admin is sure to use an uniq name

In the past we use planets, trees, ... but it was horible for the DNS.

I had a similar problem once.  It was my fonts.  I ran
mkfontdir on all my font directories in the 
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts and it cured that problem.  This
started happening after I had upgraded from redhat 4.2 to
redhat 5.1.
