I need to pay more attention to logs. I don't know what's going on
here although it's not likely a CBCP problem. I added some comments
below - it's strange whatever it is. BTW James Carlson frequents the
comp.protocols.ppp newsgroup and is very good at diagnosing problems.

Phil Howard ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) wrote:
: Kernel is 2.0.36 with ppp driver compiled in.

: Switching to an older Slackware system with kernel version 1.2.13

..

: /var/log/debug (debug option used in pppd) gets:

Everything seems OK until this point, with the IPCP negotiations
completed. Then the ISP starts to shut everything down. This is
well before the CBCP request and I don't have an explanation for it.

The only thing missing is authentication and presumably you do a chat
scripted login/password that you just chose to omit from the lines of
/var/log/messages you posted.

I've had a few probs setting up ppp. In the end I downloaded ezppp (can't
remember the url but a decent search engine should find it). After installing
this I was on-line in half an hour...

That is the key. With a static IP number and a dedicated connection, you
can do it yourself.

>What I want to have is my
>own domain name gus33.org.
>My understanding is that I go thru InterNIC to register my domain name.

You pay InterNIC to list gus33.org in the root servers.
You run BIND-8.1 (/usr/sbin/named) on your machine.
(Chances are, you're already running it.)
InterNIC tells the world your machine is the authority on
names that end in .gus33.org. Then you can make
www.gus33.org, ftp.gus33.org, etc, and accept mail @gus33.org.
BIND is well documented and reliable. Go for it.

For mail, you really need the dedicated connection.
Otherwise, people who try to mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] when your link
is down will get a "host not found" bounce.
So if you're sharing the line with a voice phone or something,
you need somebody else to do your DNS for you.

Used to work as a sysadmin for a small installation. As a general rule
each project chose a theme for it's own servers (trees, scientists, etc),
and each workstation had it's name chosen by it's user.

I have changed the IP-adres from a Class-B adres to a Class-C adres with
linuxconf on a Redhat 5.2 machine.

I also changed the netmask (was 255.255.0.0) to 255.255.255.0. Everything
seems to work nice, but when I do 'route', a route to the new network-adres
xx.xx.xx.0 and to the old network adres is made. At that server we run
squid, and this program hangs the machine after a few hours.

In the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 the NETWORK var is the
old network adres. I have now changed the NETWORK to the new one (C-adres)
and now squid works fine too.

Is this a bug in the linuxconf program, or is it someting else?

Eric

If you've got a static IP address, you can set up your own name server --
it's actually quite simple. Take a look at the DNS-HOWTO. it walks you
through several examples. A tip: make sure you set up your reverse DNS
properly, otherwise it can cause some minor problems.

I am using the pppsetup program, works just fine.

How do I see the connect speed? When I monitor /var/log/messages I
only see the ip addresses and some other ppp information.

Most distrubutions of Linux come with a full-featured terminal program
called "Minicom". Perhaps that will do what you need?

hi i'm running suse myself, and maybe its different there, so just a few
hints - hope they help with suse comes a tool, called yast, where you can
configure the startup - levels, what to start, to which level to go , etc.
this includes starting up no, only dummy, or full network, or even ethernet
plus modem. so look for a tool like that first- its a lot easier. otherwise
look for a or a bunch of, starting scripts for various levels as i said,
maybe different in suse, but there its sbin/init.d/rcx.d where x is a level
between 0 and 6 . i should think there is a faq or howto out there somewhere
, dealing with startup-processes.

Subject: Problems with USR 33.6KB Modem and PPP Server
Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 23:16:31 -0000

I have setup a PPP server so that Windows 95 clients can dial in.

After about 2 weeks of frustration and hair pulling, I now look a bit like
Homer Simpson :) , I managed to get the system to recognise the Window95
clients with AutoPPP.

However I was reconfiguring my modem and issues the wrong AT command which
overwrote the template in memory with the factory defaults, and when I dial
in now I am just getting a lot of garbage appearing on the terminal screen
(not PPP packages).

Does anyone know what the settings should be for a US Robotics 33.6KB
External Voice Modem. Configurations of flow control, baud settings etc.

I would like the modem to be able to autobaud depending on the maximum speed
of the client dialling in.

Any tips would be most appreciated.

Hello

I would like to install a chat server on my computer. The server should
be GPL if possible and come with sources. So far I found sjchat-1.0,
which does actually pretty good. Does anybody know of other programms ?
Also non-GPL but still shareware ?

What are the system requirements for a chat server ? I suppose CPU (PII
350 MHz) and memory (256 MB) wont be any problem, but how much traffic
will it produce with, say, 50 users or maybe even 100 ?

I'll second this -- you don't need much. I used an old 386/20 laptop (no
floating point h/w) for quite a while. The main constraint these days is
that most distributions won't install with less than 8M RAM.

I had a similar problem when I set up my Com21. It seems that the Com21
buffers the ethernet address of the NIC that you originally set it up to
use. Once I reset the com21, with my linux box using the 10.0.0.1 address
the ISP gave me, it all worked fine.

So, set up the linux box as your gateway, using the 10.0.0.1 address. Then
I set up a 192.168.x.0 net for internal, and set up the linux box as
192.168.x.1 as well, using ip_aliasing. Reset the com21 box, and see if you
can connect (make sure to get the default gateway set from PPP). This
should get you to the network.

You can then set up ip_masquerading to put the rest of your net on that box,
using that IP. Make sure to setup a good set of rules with ipfwadm, when
you do this. Then, make sure route knows about your network setup, and away
you go...

Regards,

Keith

If you tell us only that it does give you a strange error but not which
one we won't be able to help you. Btw. strange errors usally are not
reported to the syslog but will stay undetected by the system.
Additionally IIRC SuSE 5.3 does not come with pppd-2.3.5 so you have to

Subject: 3c509 and NE2000 problem
Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 03:53:22 GMT

I am trying to setup IP masquerading. I have recompiled the kernel
successfully (Thank you to those who helped) but I am having trouble
loading the 3c509 module since I recompiled. The module for the
NE2000 loads fine and finds the card at irq=9 and io=300. The 3Com
driver says it loads at the correct irq and io address but then fails
the DHCP. After booting, if I look at /proc/ioports everything is
okay but if I look at /proc/interrupts it shows only the IRQ for the
NE2000 being assigned. When I type ifconfig it only shows the lo and
eth1 device (loopback and NE2000 card) If I then use ifconfig and
statically map the IP address I get from the DHCP server the card will
come up. Why is it refusing to load at boot time? The kicker is that
when I boot with the original kernel under REdHat 5.1 (2.0.32) it
finds each of the cards beautifully and runs the DHCP without a hitch.
I am thinking there is something that I am not compiling into the
kernel that is causing the problem. Is there any place to find out
what RedHat compiled into the kernel that comes on the CD-ROM? Maybe
if I could compare it with what I am doing I can figure out what is
wrong. My setup works but I would like to be able to reboot the
machine and have it detect the card automatically. Any help would be
appreciated.

Toby
