Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 03:01:37 GMT
Helo,
i am having a problem sending email from my machine to my isps
smtp server. This problems occurs because of an invalid host name,
that's what it tells me. I have since tried to configure qmail but i
can't get pasted the ./config part. The error that is reported says
that it can't find the canonical hostname with the dns. What i am
concerned about is why is it searching DNS even though i don't have
bind installed. The error reported with sendmail was the same, Host :
none. i am using Debian 2.0.4, also what i am confused about is that i
had the same configuration for /etc/hostname, /etc/hosts,
/etc/resolv.conf when i was using another distribution.
in /etc/hostname i have a foobar.
in /etc/resolv.conf i have my isps domain plus their nameservers
in /etc/hosts i have:
IP# host.domain.com host
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
any response would be greatly appreciated.

Add the following lines to the rc.local file in /etc/rc.d/:
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a m -S (your network /24 such as 192.168.1.0/24) -D 0.0.0.0/0
click on the IP forwarding option in the networking control panel for routing
Have the win95 clients configured to use the Linux bax as the gateway.
Assuming you are running IP/TCP network that is all there is to it.
> Is there any web ressource to get
> informed about?
See HOWTO on IP masquerating and firewalls
you can build a decent firewall with ipfwadm.
Good Luck.

When I was first getting going I agreed with one company to work for 1 month
for free. At the end of it we could decide if we liked each other and if so
then I would get paid. Wound up staying for just under a year and the next
job was at Unisys for quite a bit more money. Worth a shot...

here is waht i did
go to /usr/sbin
rm pppd
ln -s pppd-2.3 pppd

connect

Yes it is, read the I.P. Masquerading HOWTO, available from www.linux.org
among others. You'll have to compile your kernel as a gateway and check I.P.
forwarding and masquerading. Then use ipwfadm to set up rules for I.P.
forwarding. Check the HOWTO for details.

You can use diald to allow your Linux box to bring up the connection on
demand from any of your W95 boxes.

Yes, but he also gets to pay $1200.00/month for an apartment

When people quote salaries, you always have to find out the
cost of living in the area, if you want to know how much you
will REALLY end up putting in the bank.

Subject: Using Linux modem access from W95 - is it possible?
Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 00:31:22 +0100
Hi,
I have a small home TCP/IP network based on a Linux server (RedHat 5.2),
several W95 clients and one NT Workstation. I use Samba 2.0 to access Linux
user directories from W95 and NT clients.
I have set up modem connection OK on Linux, so I can connect my Linux box to
the Internet without problems.
Now I want to access internet from my w95 clients (one at a time) using the
modem connection on the Linux server.
1. Is it possible? How can I do it? Is there any web ressource to get
informed about?
2. If it is possible, can I connect my modem from W95 ( I mean, starting my
internet connection) from W95 or must I set up modem connection on Linux
server?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I got a strange problem with the 3c574-TX.
I set up everything and I really read everything I got about PCMCIA
under Linux. I run a Suse 6.0 with the original 2.0.36.
The PCMCIA-Module detects my card correctly and doesn't give any error
message.
But if i want to ping my server I get 100% lost.
If i insert a 3com 3C589D-TP everything works fine.
The PCMCIA-docs tell me that the driver for the 3c574-TX is buggy. But
I can't believe that it absolutly doesn't run.
I have a 3com Office-Connect Dual Speed Hub8 and under Win9x the card
works fine with 100 and 10 MBit.
Everbody got a hint?
Thanx Michael Lorio

If you want to do the DNS hosting yourself you should get ...
"DNS & BIND", O'Reilly
... since although setting a DNS server up is not that hard it means
some responsibility too. Say, as soon as you start to provide dodgy
data you might get some commenting mails regarding you and your bloody
server 8)
The latest version of bind and a quite good online documentation can
be found on http://www.isc.org/ or a lot of its mirrors. Bind 8.1.2
is the current version though 8.2 is announced for march and it compiles
out of the box.
Since the source comes with, aside from other things, a support script
to convert your hosts file that alone might worth to get it.
Cheers,
Juergen

IE4 on Solaris. It's neat for about 5 minutes.. I've noticed that it seems
to botch colors (some images don't look right). It's full of little
Microsoftisms (do you want to make IE the default browser for your
environment?).
It also refused to install on Solaris 7 (2.7) because IE thinks 2.7 is less
than 2.5.

Been there, done that. As I said in my original post, the ppp
interface is up and running, and there's even a default route to the
gateway, just no response if try anyaddress besides the gateway. This
is the case, whether I set things up with netcfg, linuxconf, or just
write my own scripts to activate ppp.

I have been using bind 4.x on solaris as well as NT servers, and using
the forwarder directive for systems outside my net with success. I am
now trying to do the same thing with Linux (slackware), have added the
forwarder (to my ISP's namservers) in the options in boot.conf. No luck
in finding anything outside my domain. Is there the real simple and
obvious that I am missing here? Neither the Linux doc's or DNS
Resources Directory offered any help that I could find quickly.
Changing the resolv.conf is not really an option.

How about naming computers after locations in the office, not ugly
things like estprtsvr12 but more like coffeepot for the machine near the
