Well I FINALLY solved this dilemma after 2 days of frustration. Thank you
Luca for you help in this matter. As it turned out it was the DNS servers
that were giving me the problem.
I called @Home again today and was told that the DNS servers that the DHCP
server send to it's clients are NOT the ones that will work with Linux. I
didn't know that it mattered what the end client was be it Linux, Win or
Mac. Be that as it may, they finally supplied me with the DNS numbers that
work, I changed those in my resolv.conf and presto! it worked. I could ping
anywhere by domain name or IP address. I also changed my
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup file for the new dhcpcd 1.3 and kernel
2.2 I just installed in trying to solve all my problems.
The only problem with all this is that every time dhcpcd starts, it gets the
bad DNS addresses again and changes my resolv.conf file. I have looked thru
ifup and other startup files I know about and can't find the line that
changes this file. I need my resolv.conf left alone by DHCP. I finally just
stuck a line in my rc.local to cp my own resolv.conf over the one that is
changed on start up. This works fine but I wish I could find the file that
references this to comment out this line. Another thing, it also doesn't
look like the new dhcpcd is just started from the ifup because everytime I
put a line in here to start it, my processes show that there are 2 instances
of it active?? So does anyone know what other script would start it?
If anyones interested, the lines I changed in my ifup on RedHat 5.2 to make
it work okay for dhcpcd 1.3 were were found at:

Hi all - I'm having a lot of trouble networking my laptop and desktop
together.
I'm running RedHat 5.2 on each machine. The desktop is a Pentium II
350 MHz with a 3c509 ISA card. The laptop is a Pentium 133 with a
3c589 pcmcia card. I'm fairly sure the hardware and cables are okay.
Here's the output from route, which is the same on both machines,
except for the Use column:

The output from arp is a mystery to me. Sometimes arp -n gives
nothing on either machine. Then if I try to ping from the desktop to
the laptop, I get no response, but then arp -n on the desktop gives:

and on the laptop:

Now on the desktop, if I manually set the HWaddress to the address of
the laptop and then try to ping the laptop, ping still gives no
response. But tcpdump on the laptop shows both an echo request and a
reply, and the lights blink on the hub. If I ping from the laptop to
the desktop, the desktop doesn't reply.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

I did a network loading test using "ping -f" between two P-II 300MHz
machines; The first machine has Linux (RH 5.2) and the second has BSDI.
In addition to packet losses, after several minuets the following
message appeared on the Linux machine: "Couldn't get a free page".
How can I fix this memory management problem and reduce the amount of
packet losses?

I have a Linux system on the NT network similar to your. The
following is the /etc/printcap file for the linux system. It allows
the Linux system to print to the "HP LaserJet 4V/$mv PostScript"
printer on NT server "grove200". TCP/IP print services must be setup
and running on the NT server. The printer name in /etc/printcap must
match the NT printer name, and the linux hostname/IP address should be
known to the NT system through DNS.

in that case what are the ipfwadm commands you are using? I have set up 2
machines to ipmasq one is a redhat5.1 (kernel 3.0.34) and the other is HR5.2
kernel 2.2.1 (dl the new ipchains stuff) if yous is not working then mabye
you are using the wrong ipfwadm or ipchains commands,,the commands that I
used that worked were
For Kernel 2.0.34 with ipfwadm I used:
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 10.0.0.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
ipfwadm -A -l
(10.0.0.0 is my interel network number)
for the 2.2.1 kernel this is what worked
ipchains -A forward -s 10.0.0.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 -j MASQ

My experience printing to JetDirect cards is that they listen to UDP traffic
on port 9100. This was from snooping the traffic from a Solaris machine
running JetAdmin and an hp5x with JetDirect card installed. They might have
a range that they'll listen on.
As for the BSD (LPD) printing, there internal LPD spooler is still spotty.
Can't handle more than one request on Port 515 at a time, didn't always
respond correctly to status checks, etc, etc....
If they'd only port the JetAdmin to Linux.....

I was able to connect to an MSN dialup acct using RH5.2 the only thing
you have to realize is that they use MS-CHAP for dial in authentication,
and they use M$ DHCP server to provide IP address assignment, which can
cause problems,, but I Downloaded KDE and used Kppp and it was smooth
surfing :) my local ISP uses NT for dial in and they also use DHCP server
and I can connect, but in all reality, I would have to agree and
reccommend that you find a small local ISP with a good connection, any
ISP worth it's salt will be willing to work with you and most that I have
dealt with will let you cancel if the speed is not good,,

Isn't that overdoing it a little? I thought the zlilo target made a
zImage, copied it to /vmlinuz, renaming the old one to /vmlinuz.old
and replaced the latter with the former as the first one in
/etc/lilo.conf, rerunning lilo for the changes to take effect. I
didn't think you needed to 'make zImage' before that (while I prefer
to make zImage and rename the new kernel to something more
descriptive).

I don't think so. Ipautofw support in the kernel does only that, it
prepares the kernel for ipautofw. You need to get the ipautofw source
separately. The help button in make menuconfig says that it's
available at ftp://ftp.netis.com/pub/members/rlynch/.

If your using NFS to mount your home directories on another machine, try
updating to kernel 2.2.2 . It helped me...

ASP is a Microsoft concept. A file called asp.dll parses the .asp file and
generates HTML to dish out to the browser.
For Apache, there is a similar software called PHP. visit www.php.net for
details.
It can do databases conn and stuff like ASP ....
I doubt if you ASP will work with apache.

'diald' is the answer to your problem. It dials up the ISP on demand.
Search for it on freshmeat.. You will also need to set up IP masquarading
on your linux box. Search for all this on the dejanews/freshmeat/web search
engines etc.
