I don't know about setserial or your serial card, but C-Kermit 7.0
(currently in Beta test) supports high serial speeds in Linux in the normal
POSIX way, i.e. without any of the hacks found in previous releases.
C-Kermit's list of supported speeds on any particular platform comes from
its scanning of the appropriate header files at compile time, and can be
seen by typing:
set speed ?
at the C-Kermit> prompt. In Red Hat 5.2, where speeds are defined in
/usr/include/termbits.h, serial speeds up to 460800 bps are supported.
C-Kermit 7.0 can be found at:

By the way, if anybody would care to try building it on older Linux
systems and/or on non-Intel platforms, please let me know.

I have been using a local linux-friendly ISP for years. Recently there
service is going down hell. I plan to switch. Here is serveral choices
that recommended by my friend with good connection speed:
MSN, AOL, Prodigy, etc national ISPs. Are these ISP linux-friendly?
What are your recommendations?

i have one of these and spoke to diamon tech support. This modem is
controllor-less, i.e. it NEEDS drivers to work properly, and they only have
drivers for Windows (95/98/NT)

Hallo Andreas,
we have arround 130 PC�s on a 100MHz Pentium with 32 MB as Firewall and
Router. With IP Masquerading, transparent redirection and even a (very)
small Squid Cache. It routes arround 5 GByte a month with a load averege of
0,06 ! It even runs netacct without problems and generates arround 100MByte
accountig Data in February.
Configuration:
MB Chaintech IEM (Intel FX), Pentium 100, 32MB EDO, NCR53C810, 2 GByte HP
C2490A-300, HP-100VG ANY-Lan NIC internal and Noname Realtec 8029 (aka
ne2k-pci) external NIC.
The Squid Cache is configured to use 8MB RAM an 100MB Diskspace, but it has
a BIG parrent (HP Netserver, 200MHz Pentium, 128MB RAM 16GByte Diskarray) on
the 100MBit Network.

It seems that you have ip masquerading on your firewall, then?
And the other servers behind the firewall..how do they work? You use
port forwarding?
Keep in mind, FTP uses multiple ports. 21, 20, plus other ports that
it opens up each time you initiate a transfer.
Also, it might help to load the ip_masq_ftp module.

Hi
I have an old HP4si printer with a JetDirect card wich I have connected to
my network. The JetDirect card is the old kind without built in printqueue.
I've successfully configured my RedHat 5.2 Linux server so that I can print
testpages from it. What I want to do is to share this printer over the
network with Samba using my Linux box as spool/queue. The computers (Windows
95/NT) can se the printer but when I install the printer driver and try to
print a testpage it reports that it can't find the printer. What have I done
wrong? What do I have to do to make this work?
Sorry for the double posting but I don't know if this is a network or Samba
problem.

Although I read all the hints and tips in this newsgroup, I'm really
getting
mad about this.
I'm running SuSE Linux 5.3 (kernel 2.0.35) on an i486 PC.
For automatic dial-in I run diald 0.16 / pppd 2.2.0.
To be sure, that there is no failure with the pap-parameters, I ran
pppd manually:

Usually these manual connects are established without any error.
I attached one session log as example at the end of this message.
Then I went to automatic dial-in via diald. The configuration was
OK for some internet-connections, but then the horror began ...
With the same configuration settings I get one or some consecutive
connections established with no error. Then, suddenly, the LCP error
occurs
and there will be no good connection any more; sometimes it help to
reboot the server.
I tried out everything I read in the documentation, the newsgroups and
some
books. But nothing really solved the problem.
Manual connects don't fail as usual.
Any clues or hints of you, experts?

I tried root and I also tried a userid I setup? and did get the userid I
setup to work... sorry I am new to Linux but use AIX at work. At work we
certainly have ssh or some proprietary AIX thing that lets users telnet as
root on a per machine basis. Gee I just thought Red Hat would ship with a
ssh ??? Well I guess that's what I get for assuming proprietary UNIX
security comes setup with Linux.
Thanks for the info. Oh yea I am using Win95 for this email... I can't wait
until our PCs can run multiple OSes concurrently. I hate rebooting my
machine just to switch OSes. I think I am going to be buying VMWare for
personal use as soon it is out.

Each OS has its uses.
I like using Linux for firewalling my LAN and running services that only a
UNIX-based server can provide (on a minimal system without BSODing). And I
like using NT Workstation as a desktop OS...
