Subject: NFS on my RH5.2 system doesn't work, help needed
Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 22:57:49 +0100

Hi everyone,
I am trying to get rid of Bill's crap an have managed to install RH5.2
on my system. To install it on my system I downloaded evreything to our
NT server in installed it on my system bt ftp. Now we also want to do
the server but we do not have suffiecienh harddisk space on that system
and thus I put everything on my machine in the dir /usr/pub/ftp/. The
bad news now is that I cannot mount that dir with NFS, and this is where
I need your help.
Today I managed to install a kernel update (2.0.36-3) but this
(obvious)_ did not resove the problem.
What did I do to get my machine working as a NFS server?

1) I started portmap. (I checked with "ps" but I see nothing, on the
other hand I see it when I boot/shutdown as a service)
2) I followed the instructions in Redhat system configuration and also
checked the NFS-howto:

exports looks like (note, I am 10.0.0.4, nt server 10.0.0.6):
/pub/usr/ftp 10.0.0.4(ro,insecure)
/pub/usr/ftp 10.0.0.6(ro,insecure)

Redhat made its own exportfs (and I have also ranit manually) and when I
type "rpcinfo -p":

program vers proto port
100000 2 tcp 111 rpcbind
100000 2 udp 111 rpcbind
100005 1 udp 635 mountd
100005 2 udp 635 mountd
100005 1 tcp 635 mountd
100005 2 tcp 635 mountd
100003 2 udp 2049 nfs
100003 2 tcp 2049 nfs

Allas,
when I type
"mount -t nfs 10.0.0.4/pub/usr/ftp /root/test" I get:
mount -t nfs 10.0.0.4/pub/usr/ftp failed, reason given by server:
Permission denied

Who can help me to solve this?

One thing I should note: my /proc/filesystems does not contain the line
"nodev nfs", this I read on some page but I cannot find how I can add a
nfs filesystems and besides I do not know if this resolves the problem.

Any help is appreciated, please also reply via e-mail.

Kind regards,

Maarten Sanders

Subject: Autofs setup woes (Solaris / Linux Environment)
Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 21:53:30 GMT

Hi,

We're have a bit of a problem sorting out autofs on a new install of
Redhat 5.1

Software used: Redhat5.1 (2.0.34), ypbind 3.3 and autofs 3.1.1

We have a number of Suns on-site (Solaris 2.6) which automount home areas
under /home and some applications under /net.

The home areas automount fine, but we can't seem to get /net mounts to work.

================================================
/etc/auto.master file contains:-

+auto_master
/net -hosts
/home auto_home --timeout 60

The /etc/auto_home file contains

+auto.home

=================================================

with the /net -hosts entry in auto.master, cd'ing into /net and doing 'df .'
shows:-

/dev/hda1 30223 20340 8323 71% /

(Obviously the automounter isn't running)

Changing /net -hosts to

/net hosts_byaddr

and placing either +hosts.byaddr -or- +hosts into /etc/hosts_byaddr

gives the following when cd'ing into /net and running 'df .'

automount(pid3069) 0 0 0 0% /net

which looks like the automount should work. But then cd'ing to 'hera' (a host
with an exported filesystem) we get

bash: hera no such file or directory

in /var/log/messages, we get:-

automount[3069]: attempting to mount entry /net/hera
automount[3155]: lookup for hera failed

The only difference I can see between the Linux box and the Solaris box is
the output to 'ypcat -k hosts'

Linux produces

ipaddr ipaddr hostname

whereas Solaris gives

hostname ipaddr hostname

We have tried dumping the output from 'ypcat -k hosts' on a Solaris box to a
file and pointing the entry from auto.master on the Linux box to it. This
still gives the same error.

This is pretty much a show stopper for us.

Can anyone throw any light on what we're doing wrong?

Any help gratefully received :-)

Cheers

Don

My apologies for a premature posting of possibly incorrect information. I
had a pci modem installed in a box that then had RH5.2 installed on it but
I'm not absolutely sure that this box still has a pci modem in it. It is

I'll check it myself...

Once again, my apologies for the original posting and to those who are

Hi there!

As i'm reading along, the way to go when you want to setup a web server is
to plug in 2 NICs in your server with one connected to your ISP (i use adsl,
by the way) and the other one to your LAN. But do you really need 2 NICs.
I've read somewhere that if you had a hub with an uplink port, you can plug
the modem into that port and all you need is one NIC in your server. Since i
have 4 systems at home (which includes my old donkey, a 486DX50 with soon to
be installed RH 5.0) and a network hub with an uplink port, will the latter
solution work?

Thanks people, i really appreciate it.

ITS WORKING!!!!!

Thanks to all who helped.

My goal was to access a cdrom on a windows machine from my linux machine.

1) Can't use NFS.

2) Use Samba. Luckily for me I already had it installed. Just to dense to
use it.

3) I had to create a lmhosts file in the /etc. I had a hosts file, but
samba was complaining. My lmhosts is identical to my hosts. (If this is
wrong, could someone tell me please.)

4) smbclient -L darmok (darmok being the name of the windows
machine.)

This gives a listing of all shared devices on darmok.
This also took a while (1.5 min). I think I have some more network
tweaking to do someplace.
Also it showed me one mistake I was making. Samba wants the share name
from windows, not the drive letter.

5) smbmount //darmok/cd /mnt/cdrom2

At this point my windows cd (//darmok/cd) is mounted to my linux
filesystem at /mnt/cdrom2

Access time is very good. No waiting on the smbmount command. If
anyone has suggestions on why I had very slow response with smbclient,
please let me know.

I get this same error. The error message in syslog is:
Feb 27 14:42:26 hex kernel: SMBFS: need mount version 6
Is this a libc6 thing maybe? I'm still on libc5...
Running kernel 2.2.1, SMB_FS is defined.

Tried this, got:
could not find mount point -C: No such file or directory

I'm using 2.0.2, but I got the same errors on 1.9.something.
man smbmount is about useless for this. The best i got out of it was:
The mount(2) system call does not return any sensible
error code, so you have to guess what failed when you
       could not mount a share.

Subject: HELP: No DNS resolution after using linuxconf in RH5.2
Date: 27 Feb 1999 20:41:03 GMT

Can anybody help?

Here's the situation...I had my system running just fine (Redhat 5.2)
using dhcp for a cable modem connection. The only thing bothering me was
waiting for sendmail during bootup. I decided to use the linuxconf
program to remove sendmail (and named which was also running) from the
startup using the "control service activity" feature in linuxconf. Now
after making these changes, everything seems to boot up fine. The
network connection seems to be up...i.e. I can ping and traceroute using
ip addresses...but nothing works using fully qualified domain names. For
example, when I try "nslookup ftp.cdrom.com" I get:

>nslookup ftp.cdrom.com
*** Can't find server name for address 24.64.3.139: Non-existent host/domain
*** Can't find server name for address 24.64.3.140: Non-existent host/domain
*** Default servers are not available

The wackiest thing is that all of this worked just fine before. Any ideas
what happened and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Did you put the mgetty line in your /etc/inittab ?
I've added 8 lines for my RocketPort 8

m1:12345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty tty -n 1 ttyR0
m2:12345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty tty -n 1 ttyR1
m3:12345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty tty -n 1 ttyR2

m7:12345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty tty -n 1 ttyR6
m8:12345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty tty -n 1 ttyR7

I'm dialing out on the first of those modems as well so I use a ppp option
in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 file like
file /etc/ppp/dialout
This file contains the options I use for dial out.

For dial in I use optionfiles like /etc/ppp/options.ttyR0 to ttyR8. They
contain :
asyncmap 0
lock
192.168.1.1:192.168.1.151
name DialIn
modem
crtscts
auth
-chap
+pap
proxyarp

Of course the IP ....151 is different for each modem. This gives every dial
in a address in the range of
192.168.1.151 to 192.168.1.158. This is probably not the best intallation
there is but it works great for me. Every ppp(0 to 8) has its own options
file in its own ifcfg file. Make shure your pap-secrets file is correct

I hope this will help you.

Install x3270. Of course, above mentioned mainframes need to
have a tn3270 server running. You may need RACF permission in
order to login using the TN3270 protocol instead of SNA.

Um, you don't register a "site" with InterNIC. The only machines
you have to identify to them are the name servers, which will
normally be maintained by your ISP... those have to stay up.

Try going to /etc/dhcpc/resolve.conf. There you should see a
nameserver. If you do not then call @home and tell them to tell you
your nameserver IP and add the line 'nameserver x.x.x.x' where x.x.x.x
is you ns' ip. That should be it.

Sounds like a DNS problem to me.

You don't tell if you ping a name or a address but if named is not
configured like it should it can slow things down a lot. Is named configured
ok on your linuxbox ?? if commands like netstat and route don't give you all
the info in a split-second mostly named is not setup like it should. Are you
using the c:\windows\host and in case of Samba the c:\windows\lmhost file?
In your case the first might help you out.

Leave the loopback (127.0.0.1) like it is!!! Configure the files
/etc/hosts
/etc/HOSTNAME
/etc/sysconfig/network

the others are for named

/etc/named/boot
/var/named/whatever.you.called.your.domain.host.file

the first 3 are simple for the others you might wan't to take a look at the
HOWTO's and "man named".But first of all redefine your loopback or nothing
that uses TCP/IP will work.

Hi, I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I have a local lan with Linux, Win machines, and a Linux IP Masq firewall,
two nics, one connected to a cable modem. I changed the ifup script to add
the proper hostname to dhcpcd to request the ip address from the dhcp
server. Everything is good in cable land. All machines work and can connect,
performance is good.

I have only one nagging problem. Occasionally, dhcpcd tries to renew the ip
address and fails. I get a console message something like "eth1: Setting rx
mode to 0 addresses". This happens about once every two or three days ( at
least when I notice). After this happens an ifconfig shows eth1 set to
0.0.0.0. I assume that it did not renew the lease. Now I should be able to
run ifup eth1, and get everything to work, but this always responds
"failed". I tried ifdown eth1 first and it says no such pid, that's ok, and
then ifup eth1 and it fails. If I reboot the machine it always gets the ip
address.

Can someone enlighted me about what's going on?

Thanks for any help
Leo

if your problem is getting nameservices from your Windows pc's you might
want to add the file C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS to your windows PC's

172.16.1.1 pentium.unde.cat
172.16.1.2 petit.unde.cat

Make sure the comma that's in your example isn't there.

Like in Camp Nou there are to many Dutch people in this group, don't you
think :)

I'm trying to configure a linux pc as a gateway for two IP systems, and I'm
having a little trouble putting in the routing statements. The systems have
a 10.x.x.x series IP and a 100.x.x.x series IP addresses. Can anyone help
by posting the proper routing addresses statements to make it work? Thanks
so much.
