Subject: AutoPPP doesn't switch to uid from a_ppp
Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 10:48:49 +1100

Hi,

We recently upgraded our Linux server from RH5.1 to RH5.2 with the
corresponding upgrade to v2.3.5 of PPP. Since then, whenever a user dials
in using PAP, it no longer registers them in /var/log/wtmp. All
we see is:

a_ppp ttyD7 33600/33600 LAP- Thu Feb 25 09:11 - 16:29 (07:18)

Before the upgrade we used to get:

userid ttyD7 dialup7.net... Sat Jan 2 07:42 - 15:05 (07:22)
a_ppp ttyD7 31200/ARQ/31200 Sat Jan 2 07:42 - 07:42 (00:00)

I have checked our PPP config files and nothing has changed. We use the
"login" directive which successfully authenticates our users from NIS. We
are using mgetty (v1.1.14-5).

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks heaps,
Chris

I beg to differ but MAC addressess are not made for spying on us they
are for network location and such. No on knows that I own a certain
MAC address (unlike Intel that wants you to register after getting the
PIII). I think it is a bad move on intel's part but those that accept
it are doomed to get shafted. Your ass not mine (I will keep my PI any
day running). Sorry for the crossposting just got a little annoyed and
wanted it to be righted in all places of being.

Hummm... But I tried to telnet to my box from outside (just like other ppl did
and see what I get from the log file) I only see one line from ipfwadm
complains the rej. And I have tried this from a few different ISP and the
results are the same (i.e. only one line being log).

(note: telnet from outside is not allowed by fw rules)

Hummm.... maybe... but kinda unlikely, because seems like people are coming
from all over the world... and unless the machine that was on this IP somehow
allow ppl from all over the world to telnet in... (Well atleast it is very
unlikely a normal user will allow ppl all over the place to telnet in. Hummm..

I am using Red Hat Linux 5.1 to try to connect to the internet using my TCI
@Home cable modem. During the boot process, eth0 is detected fine, but I
get the following
message:

Using DHCP for eth0... done.

search plano1.tx.home.com

The last line is my domain. When I issue the command dhcpcd -r, the PC
light on my cable modem turns on, but goes off after about a minute. I
cannot ping anything.

I have looked at several of the FAQs but cannot figure out why the netmask
does not match the route address. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all,

Please help if you know the solution to this problem.

I am trying to set the dummy interface on RedHat 5.1:

ifconfig dummy 192.1.1.13

I get the Error:

SIOCSIFADDR: Operation not supported by device.

I know that the dummy module is in the kernal. in fact after executing the
above command the dummy interface is loaded, I can see it using "lsmod"
command.

What is happening ?

If your going low end it may just be easier to buy new!

I saw ISA cards for $10 at buy.com and PCI 10-T/100 cards at $20.

I just bought a D-Link DFE-530TX form buy.com, its on the hardware
compatibility list, only $20. PCi lots of features 10/100 etc etc.

To run a firewall on the 2.2.0 kernel who have to run ipchains. The
scripting is not too bad. Just follow the following link for more info.

This isn't answering your question directly, but have you considered
telnetting to another user account and then doing an "su -" to obtain
root status?

Subject: Q: I have RTFM'd. Need help with Slirp over Ethernet. Thanks.

Reply-To: *

My computer is a Linux machine on a 10.0.x.x private network, with
telnet access to an AIX machine, which has an internet IP.

I can successfully telnet to the AIX machine and run programs there,
via my Ethernet connection.

I can successfully run SLIRP on the AIX machine, while I am connected
to it via modem dialup. SLIRP works fine, I can telnet, ftp, browse
web, etc.

What I *cannot* do is telnet to the AIX machine via the LAN and run
SLIRP across the LAN. This AIX machine has much more bandwidth than a
modem, so I could get more speed if I can get SLIRP to work across the
LAN, instead of the modem.

What I have tried:
I telnet to the AIX machine from my Linux box. I run SLIRP there. I
open up another window on my Linux box, and run PPPD and tell it to
use /dev/ttyp0 for it's PPP connection. My first window, which was on
ttyp0, shows curly braces, etc, that show the data from the PPPD is
getting to it, but the data is not seen by the AIX machine's SLIRP
program.

I believe that to get this working, I need to get PPPD's data to go
across the Telnet connection and be seen by the AIX's SLIRP program.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yes, "grep PPPIOCSASYNCMAP ppp-2.3.5/pppd/*.[hc]" searches all *.h and *.c

First you need to mount your floppy so you can access the diskette.

How to mount (must be root):
1. create a directory, you can name it anything.
2. type: mount /dev/fd0 thenewdirectory
3. go to the directory that you just created, you should be able to
see the content of the disk in that directory now.
If you can't see the content, than you might need to use other device.
My floppy is at /dev/fd0, your might be different than mine.

I don't know how to load the ethernet module though.
What I did just compile the kernel with a support for that ethernet card
and it will work.

I am using diald version 0.16

I am not sure about extracting tar.gz files (where to put them) in the

I edited to config.h file and I go to do a 'make depend' and it

I recently hooked up a computer to the resnet jack running linux. DHCP
assigned me the address 130.91.190.149 for my NIC. For some odd reason,
after the computer is off and disconnected from the jack, I'm able to
ping it and get a response at the IP. I get a MAC address of
08-00-2b-b7-ce-d0 from the IP, but when I connect my box to the jack
its MAC address isnt the one above. I also get this kernel error
in my logs.

Feb 28 20:13:04 wedge kernel: ARP: arp called for own IP address

I also can't seem to connect to my box thru telnet/www/ftp windows clients,
the connection just times out. But I am able to connect to it easily
thru another unix box like solaris or linux. I'm pretty sure the OS side
of things are fine. But is it possible that DHCP has assigned me an
already used IP address? Or something is misconfigured in the subnet?

Thanks!

Subject: Linux as the file and internet server with win NT/95/98 clients

I am new to Linux. I have not worked with Unix. It is unclear to me how
you can run Linux as a file server and allow internet access through it with
the clients being win 95/98 and NT Workstation (25 total clients). Internet
access is through a router on a dedicated 56k frame relay line using a
windows based proxy program.

The company is reluctant to spend big $ for Back Office and I can't blame
them for that but they want to know how Linux could solve their problems.
They have specific windows based applications running off the one win 95
machine to different clients. I would imagine that can't be done with a
Linux Server. One program uses the Sybase engine another FoxPro and
another Provide X.

I am interested in hearing of some solutions or should they bow to
Microsoft.

Subject: copying from nfs to local disk
Date: Mon, 01 Mar 1999 01:52:29 GMT

Greetings all,

I've got a basic NIS/NFS thing going on here at home, and I'm running into a
somewhat small but annoying problem. I knew to use NIS so as to take care of
the identical UID requirement with NFS. My central box exports /home, and the
client mounts it.

Oddly enough, I can create files in my exported home directory as the user,
but I can't copy files between the nfs mounted home directories and local
filesystems at the client system. What gives?

I don't expect to ever get permission denied when I try to cd into any
directory on any system, local or nfs mounted, so this is a little strange.
The closest I can get to seeing anything is doing an ls and getting all my
files listed one at a time, and seeing Permission Denied next to each one.

Any help would be appreciated.
