my problem is a dns-request from my SuSE 6.0-Linux after any connect like

What is the server looking for and how to stop these requests?

Subject: collisions on the NICs - news @ 5
Date: Mon, 01 Mar 1999 03:34:57 GMT
I upgraded by box from rh 5.1 2.0.35 to 5.2 2.0.36 and I've noticed an
increase in the amount of collisions on both NIC cards - though they are
growing at different rates.
Some observations:
I'm running ipfwadm and this is working correctly. I did try upgrading my
ipportfw to the latest version .37 (per his docs) and had problems during
the patch load where it requested a reverse (-R) load, I agreed and the
patch loaded but it still does not work. I have not rebuilt the kernl so I
really don't suspct that is the problem.
I also noticed that Apache has stopped working even though it's up and
running, it's not processing requests on port 80.
The rest of my configuration is the same as before the upgrade. Those files
over written by the upgrade we're saved off as rpmsave (?) so the rebuild
went without a hitch and the system was back up and running after 1 hr and 1
re-compile to get my NIC cards registered.
Any thoughts?

All it needed was ipcp-accept-local in the options file. Guess I should
read the man pages once in a while. :)

Subject: FTP: connection refused
Date: Mon, 01 Mar 1999 03:58:11 GMT
I'm writing a Perl script to benchmark a Compaq server comparing
the performance between Linux and Windows NT. I'm currently
running RedHat Linux 5.2 and wu-ftpd versio 2.4.2b18-2.1 on the
server, but will soon be loading MS Windows NT 4.0 Server..
I'm noticing some interesting behavior on my testing with 4 processes
transferring files to/from the Compaq from a small HP test machine (an
E35). Several times during the test, all connections will start to be
refused. If I restart inetd ("/etc/rc.d/init.d/inet restart"), then the
condition clears.
There are no messages in the syslog (/var/log/messages) that suggests
any problems. I'm not sure what to look at in the ps or netstat output
to point me to the cause of the behavior.
Can anyone suggest some things to look at in the configuration to help
explain what is happening? I'd really like to eliminate this behavior
as
well. I'm trying to demonstrate the Linux will be more robust than
Windows NT.

Boy, you must've gotten some pissed off phone op... Erol's is great
about Linux. I've called with win95 problems before, and made passing

they often give me advice on using Linux to get around problems with my

This is nonsense. When I compile the kernel I have the option to install NTFS support.
I have RedHat 5.2 with kernel 2.2.2 and I can read my NTFS partition without any
problem.

It is more than having the potential, I have to reinstall NT after my partition
was hozed. I keep NT or read only for now. I use a fat partition to transfer data
back and forth. It is actually my DRDOS partition.

Well, you would have the same problem using Windows NT, 95, or OS/2.
Unfortuntely, you can't mount a directory, only a file share. In this
case the netbios host is "ot-nt1", the shared resource is "users", so
when you mount the file share you see every directory within the "users"
share. To mount only the dwallace directory, you would need to
reconfigure the NT host "ot-nt1" to share the "dwallace" directory
(perhaps giving it share name "foo"). Then your smbmount command would
be:
smbmount //ot-nt1/foo /home/dwallace/h -I <ip> -c

Won't ever work with LINUX or any ethernet. The equipment you describe is
SNA terminals. They run over Token Ring using a Front End processor to
interface with the main frame.

Actually that is the computr to modem speed. It should be high to
account for the modem to modem compression (at 50K modem to modem speed
that can easily give your 100K needed in computer to modem speed.)

Subject: Connetcing to NT RAS with linux
Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 16:30:58 +1100
Dear All,
I'm running the Debian distribution of Linux in our office. I need to
connect to the office of another company running NT Server via a dial-up
line. The other company has set up RAS to accept "any authentication
including clear-text" which according to MS help means PAP. I've set up the
pap-secrets file to contain my user-name password pair. I've been attempting
to connect using the following command line:
pppd ttyS1 115200 connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/otherco"
auth debug lock nodefaultroute noproxyarp modem crtscts require-pap user me
The output of this is at the end of the message, which I hope someone can
make more sense of than I could. The error message at the NT side is
"authentication timout".
Any help on this would be most appreciated.

Subject: RedHat 5.2 and SMC EZ Card 10 PCI (1208T). PLEASE HELP
Date: 1 Mar 1999 06:25:13 GMT
I am a new linux user and I can't get this card to work no matter what I
do. I've tried a variety of drivers including the ne2000 pci. I get an
error message at boot saying parameter object not recognized but, I have
checked, double-checked, and triple-checked the configuration and it is
correct. Any suggestions?

Absolutely correct, good point. ATW1s95=45 reports the modem connection
speed and error correction progress. And yes, I looked it up in the manuel
- just as I always have to do. :)

: Modems can report the speed of the serial line to the PC instead of the
: connect rate. This is configurable by a AT-command - please don't ask me
: which one since I would have to search for the manual.

When a relative's company upgraded, I fell into about 5 D-Link DE220T ISA
cards. They work great with NE2000 support compiled into the kernel. You
might want to try that.
