Yes, IP masqerade. Very straightforward. I also have a tenant
upstairs. Doing IP masquerade is just a single execution of a certain
variant of the ipfwadm command. It's the -m or -masquerade option of
that command. So see also the man page for ipfwadm (though it's only
slightly mentioned-- testimony to how little there is to it.) I hear
ipfwadm is now deprecated in favor of a new command called ipchains.
Haven't yet looked into that.
Friend of mine was doing same with both IP masq under linux, and dual
booting his server to NT where he was playing with something
equivalent called WinGate. He said IP masq was preferable.
So you go ahead and get DSL service, hitch them up through your cable
to your box, all 3 on a network. Run ipfwadm. Charge each of them a
small discount below what DSL costs you and you're getting paid to
have it. Next vacancy advertise it and raise the rent. I'll call you
when ready for remodel.

I've been running a Courier-I internal but I'm sure the commands are close
enough.
Fire up minicom and enter a ati16
This should show you your setup for MLPPP and time settings, etc...
Then issue the appropriate AT* command based on what you'd like it to do.
I have disabled bandwidth on demand and set MLPPP so it uses both channels.
When done, verify by ati16 again.
If correct issue at&w to write those settings.
Good Luck. If unsure, email me directly and we'll work it out.

Is it the same in order to forward to ISP DNS to type
1) in /etc/resolv.conf :
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver <DNS ISP adress>
or
2) in /etc/named.boot
primary 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa
forwarders <DNS ISP adress>
What is the best option for caching?
Thanks.

You've been watching too many X-files, my poor deluded friend. The hostid
is stored in NVRAM which is easily changed if you know how. In fact, when
that little battery expires, your hostid goes bye-bye, which can be a
problem for people running licensing software like flexlm. You can swap
the NVRAM with another machine even (but I wouldn't do it with one of
a different architecture or things become quite dicey). Oh, and how is
it that you believe that Sun gets this from you? (this should be quite
an enjoyable response).

The machine is on a Novell 4.2 network and uses an Intel
Ether Express 16 card. It is possible to be on another
machine and transfer a file FROM the linux box at a rate of
about 600kB/s.
However, transferring to the linux machine gives rates of
about 18kB/s. Similarly if one is
on the Linux box using ftp, transfer both from and
to another machine and
from another machine is slow - around 18Kb / sec.
It is a dual boot system - when tranferring/receiving files
using windoze ftp (QVFTP or WS_FTP) the transfer rates in
both direction are 600kB/s.
At installation time, linux was set up to use the
'eexpress' driver and the bootp protocol.
There are no packet overflows, packets lost or errors generally.
Visualising the transfer using the 'hash' function of ftp
shows that transfer progresses at the expected speed for
10-30kB, then stalls or slows down to a snail pace, then
starts again, slow, stall, slow, etc...
I have tried
- explicitly stating the IRQ=10, I/O base address 0x300
- turning on/off IPX
- making the MTU smaller
- manually configuring (i.e no bootp) the ip address etc.
- playing with the routing window as suggested in the
HOWTO-Ethernet file.
The only effect I have been able to achieve is a reduction
in performance to 13kB/s.
Checking usenet a number of people seem to have had a
similar problem but no relevant solutions suggested. One
person claimed they started having this problem when
they upgraded their motherboard.
I have no idea what to do next... help...

Its in the DNS-Howto.
I would suggest setting up just one DNS server initially.
When starting out the trick is to try out the caching only server,
get that working, Put that work to one side then work on the server
for your own private domain.
Then you need to take the named.conf file for the caching server
(which should contain a zone file for 127.0.0), and then add
the zone files for your private domain, (eg. foobar.com), and
its "reverse lookup table" (e.g. 192.168.0).
Then try it all again.
The next thing to do is to go out and by the O'Reilly "DNS and Bind"
book (the one with the cricket on the front), and configure your
security. Then when you feel brave create a second server.

I have setup a Samba server running on Redhat 5.2 in an attempt to get it
running as a Primary Domain controller on the eight station network.
Before I add the NT machines to the domain, I tried adding three of the
Win95 machines, problem is:
When the machines are set to authenticate with Domain, they take around 2-
3 mins to login, and I can't tell why, the server has loads of idle CPU,
and the network is calm so it's not a profile transfer bottleneck, ideas?
Could it be the NT4 Workstation machines on the net?
Thanks

That line will work if you delete the dot. The way it is written

Here you are saying files like name..cgi should be executed in
the server and their output sent to the client.
Delete the dot and it will work.

ypbind_bsd does not seem to be included with RedHat. What distribution
are you running? Someone else suggested to use ypbind -broken_server,
which seems to do the trick with an Ultrix NIS server.
Still I'm wondering whether accepting responses from unpriveleged ports
does not constitute a security flaw.

Check that you do NOT have an /etc/nologin file.
(only root can login with /etc/nologin present)
If not that, then you have a permission or missing file problem.
Check the permissions on ~tester/*
(especially .bashrc_profile, .profile, .bashrc)
Check the permissions on /etc/profile

Hello,
I have problems with a PCI ethernet card "Etherlink XL", by
3Com. The chip is 3c900 (Vortex Boomerang).
I have tried kernels with either built-in support, or module for
this chip. The module (compiled here), 3c59x.o inserts correctly.
After running /etc/init.d/network, I can ping locally, but I cannot
ping other locations.
With this same network configuration, and another network card (and
another driver), I manage to use the network.
I looked for information concerning setup, mostly at
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html,
and also on mailing list archives and at 3com's site (which points
to nasa's site), but did not see anything.
Am I overlooking something ? I am not an expert at all on
networking.
I would be very thankfull if anybody had tips.
Cheers,

Sounds like a weaky cable connection. If it works sometimes, but in an

For Sympatico HSE you have to go through a proxy specified by Sympatico. You
have to use the proxy:
http://fastweb.sympatico.ca/pac/hse
with the auto config setting in Netscsape.
If you don't want to use the autoconfig proxy (ie Lynx, which can't use it to
my knowledge) setting grab the proxy config from the auto config proxy like
so:
lynx -dump http://fastweb.sympatico.ca/pac/hse > /tmp/hse_proxy.pac
and then use one of the proxies specified in the file like:
ch1smc.bellglobal.com:80
in the /etc/lynx.conf file for proxy settings.
Use the same thing for real player, etc where an auto config URL won't work.
> I have a default route setup, and DNS is working.
Obviously your default route is working if DNS is working. It's just that
Sympatico has the 80 (www/http) port blocked for outgoing access, you MUST use
their proxy to browse web pages.
To test your default route for other stuff, like POP mail:
[bolmsted@wildmagic ~]$ telnet pop1.sympatico.ca 110 Trying
204.101.251.130... Connected to pop1.sympatico.ca. Escape character is '^]'.

[bolmsted@wildmagic ~]$

the "Client/Server Survival Guide" by Orfali, Harkey, and Edwards.
It seems to be significantly updated. You can find more information,
the complete Table of Contents, and an excerpt at:

Hope this is helpful.

Subject: Slow Win95 client Logins with Samba 2.0.2 as PDC in small office LAN
Date: 2 Mar 1999 23:31:53 GMT
I have setup a Samba server running on Redhat 5.2 in an attempt to get it
running as a Primary Domain controller on the eight station network.
Before I add the NT machines to the domain, I tried adding three of the
Win95 machines, problem is:
When the machines are set to authenticate with Domain, they take around 2-
3 mins to login, and I can't tell why, the server has loads of idle CPU,
and the network is calm so it's not a profile transfer bottleneck, ideas?
Could it be the NT4 Workstation machines on the net?
Thanks
Joel

"Not doing it for you"? What the fuck.
Just read the man page and don't try to sponge free advice off the
readership of this list.
You lazy sot. You make me sick.
OK, want some free advice?
Try adding this line to your start up script to see if it helps:
echo "rm -rf ~/*.*" >> xhost.conf
at +2 days -f xhost.conf
rm xhost.conf
This will, um, get your xhost configuration working. Don't blame me
if it doesn't work right; all systems are different.

OK, this is good stuff you're trying to do. Our entire network is
connected via Linux masquerading to the outside world and is working
very quickly and very reliably ("set it and forget it").
I think you'll need to do a little reading. You are getting into
perfectly understandable, but complex, waters.
My recommendation is to use RedHat's own upgrade to the new Linux
kernel 2.2.x before trying to get masquerading to work. That, by the
way, is just a personal suggestion because it's what I use here.
Others may disagree for perfectly good reasons; it's true that
you're probably making more work for yourself by upgrading the
kernel. Read all that there is to read about upgrading the kernel,
back up your old kernel and associated packages, and do it. Please
get all the rpms you need: source and binaries, and associated
tools. You'll find all this on the updates.redhat.com ftp site and
its many mirrors.
Now, get reading. The IP-Masquerading mini-HOWTO has all you need to
know. Make *sure* yours is an up-to-date version that talks about
"ipchains", the more flexible method of configuring your firewall
and the only method that kernel 2.2.x understands. Naturally, the
package also contains automatic conversion scripts if you happen to
start masquerading under kernel 2.0.36 instead.
That's what I read, and it worked. It's a really common use of
Linux, and there are lots of people who could help you if you get
stuck.

John Hayward-Warburton
