Thank you for the advice. With setserial I am able to redirect the serial
ports away from IRQ3. The problem is I added this to the rc.serial (logical
location, I thought) but rc.serial is called after the boot tries to init the
network. I am now getting a message at boot saying "eth1 delayed activation"
(or something to that extent). I assume that the conf.modules is called
prior to rc.serial, do you know if I can switch these two's order in the
rc.sysinit?
Thanks

hi,
I've just installed openldap 1.2 on a RH 5.2 box running kernel 2.2.1.
I've installed as rpms and set it up according to the "Slapd and Slurpd
Administrator's Giude". It generates the ldbm files and everything seems
to work fine, but when I try running "ldapsearch -h 127.0.0.1
'objectclass=*' it returns the error "No such object". But according to
the Administrator's Giude it should return every entry in the
database.....HELP !!!!!!!!
best regards

That FAQ has a lot of useful info.
As a Linux "newbie" I expected more of a hassle getting Mediaone to work, but
all it took
was selecting the DHCP lookup option during the system install . I finally got
Linux up
and running and started Netscape; I really didn't expect to connect , but it
worked first
time out. This is pretty funny considering it took the Media One installer
almost an hour
to configure my PC, which at that time was running NT 4.0.
If you install from a hard drive using 5.2 downloaded from an FTP server , look
for updated root/supp diskette (img) files, in case you have a with the
installation program being unable to read the RedHat directory.

I know linux isn't plug and play but it should be able to detect (and does in the
installation procedure) a PCI tulip(DLink DFE500-TX) card. I know the 3com card wont
work because it is a 905B.
I followed the on screen instructions (as I have before) and the system is failing to
network. I have used a valid IP address, netmask etc. but I cannot get the system to
network.
I have also tried changing the card and altering the /etc/conf.modules file
appropriately.
Are there any diagnostic utilities on the system the might tell me what is going on (I
will check /tmp/syslog)
I am confused!
Any more ideas?
Paul.

Sorry..I don't deal with java stuff, I was under the impression that it
was only used in browsers. I figured that icqjava was basically just a

J,
You should be able to rearrange things. I am pretty sure I did something similar.
By changing the numbers on the symbolic links in /etc/rc.d/rcN.d or moving the code
from one run level to another (I forget if it's HP/UX or linux: one goes up and
down through the run-levels at each boot, the other treats each run level as a
separate boot, I don't remember which is which), you can re-order the process. Just
make sure you document this in case a future upgrade re-arranges things back or
creates duplicate entries with the old names.

First of all, I would highly recommend against PPTP. It has many
known security vulnerabilities, very serious ones at that. MS
has finally fixed some of them with SP4, but many of them still
exist. I'm not sure whether Windows 98 includes this fixes. To
give you some information as to the insecurities of Windows, I
recommend that you check out the following sites:
http://www.l0pht.com
http://www.counterpane.com
The *proper* way to do secure tunneling is via IPSEC. One
program that supports IPSEC tunneling is SSH (Secure Shell).
F-Secure ships both clients and servers for Windows and
Unix for this purpose:
http://www.datafellows.com/f-secure/
I have heard of projects to develop a PPTP client for Linux,
but I have not heard of a server:
http://www.cag.lcs.mit.edu/~cananian/Projects/PPTP/
So, if you don't feel that you have the need to secure your
tunnels and don't have the money to pay for F-Secure (but do
have the money to pay for all the per-seat licenses for NT
Server), then I suppose NT is your bet.

I'm trying to setup a printer to a netware print queue on my Linux box. The
name of the server is valley_pres and the queue is programmer. I created
the initial printcap file within the gui, adding a Netware Printer (NCP) and
it looks like the following:
##PRINTTOOL3## NCP ljet4 600x600 letter {} LaserJet4 Default {}
lp0|programmer:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp0:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/filter:\
:af=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/acct:\
:lp=/dev/null:
and when I do a status, I get the following...
programmer:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
no entries
no daemon present
I've changed the :lp=/dev/null: to :lp=: and added the lines prior to the lp
line:
:rm=valley_pres:\
:rp=programmer:\
and the status tells me that it is waiting for valley_pres to come up.
Jobs are going to the queue, but nothing will print. I'm able to ping the
valley_pres server. Is there something that I'm missing here? Any help
would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
