Subject: possible to obtain header info from SOCK_STREAM socket?
Date: Sun, 07 Mar 1999 23:53:15 GMT
I'm using a simple proxy I wrote for a task I am doing and SOCK_STREAM
has worked fine. Now I need some additional info from the tcp header
(specifically ip, port, seq, ack and flags) and want to aviod using
SOCK_PACKET because I don't want the addional overhead of managing the
header info. (incrementing seq and generating ack's right or wrong?)
I want to know if there is an easy way (kernel system call?) to
obtain tcp header info (specifically ip, port, seq, ack and flags)
from an established SOCK_STREAM socket within the process itself (so
that a process knows its header info). tcpdump is not what I'm
looking for and if I have missed something with regard to SOCK_PACKET
and SEQ/ACK management I appreciate corrections and help. I just want
to keep it as simple and reliable as possible.

Hello World..
Lately I have received a few SYN flood attack. And from the syslog it
said something about sending SYN cookie... I know what a SYN flood
attack is, but what is a SYN cookie? And how could SYN cookie to
prevent/protect server from SYN flooding? Can anyone explain?
Also from my firwall log, I get some telnet (mostly, but sometime also
get some attempts to port 113) attempts from external (which is blocked
by firewall) network atleast 4-5 times a day, is that normal for a cable
modem user? Or the number is a bit high/low?

Hi:
In my house there are 4 computers. One is a P166/32MB and the other 3
are all PII266. I would like to set up internet access for the entire house
using the P166 as the server.
I can do this now with win95/98 and an add on Network Address Translator
program called Winroute. The program is great but only 2 problems. It is
shareware and limited to only 4 users. (of course another problem is that it
runs on the windows platform, hehe)
My questions are:
1. Does linux have all I need within the operating system to be able to do
without buying add-ons?
2. Would it be worth it to learn how to do this on Linux?
3. Can anyone point me to a good concise source of info on how to set up
such a network?
Hearty thank yous all around!

Hi ,
I have a big problem installing my cheap n/w Encore ENL832-TX Fast ethernet
cardcard.
To get it recognized by linux
I want to :
1. Upgrade to Linux 5.2 but I don't have a CD. So I want a n/w connection.
For that as I want a n/w card.. for that v5.2..
2. upgrade the kernel .. (as v5.2 will do)
but as i can access the n/w from windows 98 which is on the same hard
drive, IS THRE ANYWAY THAT I CAN GET THE UPGRADE FILE DOWNLOADED IN
WINDOWS 98 AND CAN USE IN LINUX BY ACCESSING ITS FILES/.
thanks for your help

I've been trying to get my cable modem running for a few weeks now too. I'm
running slackware 3.6 and the service is roadrunner. I downloaded
dhcpcd-1.3.17-pl2.tar.gz and tried to make it getting this error:
gw1:/usr/src/dhcpcd# make
gcc -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -Wall -malign-loops=2 -malign-jumps=2
-malign-functions=2 -I. -c udpipgen.c
udpipgen.c: In function `udpipgen':
udpipgen.c:78: `IPDEFTTL' undeclared (first use this function)
udpipgen.c:78: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
udpipgen.c:78: for each function it appears in.)
make: *** [udpipgen.o] Error 1
I poked around and found out it needs glibc-2.0.5 or later so I found
glibc-2.0.7pre6. I'm having trouble installing that too getting 2 errors
somewhere along the way. Is it possible to still get the earlier version of
dhcpcd so I don't need to upgrade to glib2.0.7...?
I also have 2 network cards in this box, both work by themselves and
together with win95. If I boot up linux with one card set up for a local
net and the other for the cable modem, I can't reach my local network. I
have to change the ip of the second card to make it part of the local net
(not having to physically connect it) before the box can connect to the rest
of the network. I can then set it back to what it was with no problem.
Well it's working now (just rebooted to get info) but I disabled configuring
the second nic. Will dhcp take care of setting up the second card or is
there something I have to configure first?

Subject: 3Com 3C905B and 2.2.2
I am a relative newbie, so I apologize if this is a very basic
question...
I have recently built and installed the 2.2.2 kernel. Previously I was
using 2.0.36, and my 3Com 3C905B was working fine. The card also works
fine under Win95. However, I've had the following problems under 2.2.2:
1. Under make config, I chose the 3C905 support (compiled in, not
module). Kernel boots fine, recognizes the driver (eth0, IRQ 10 which
is correct). However, when it gets to trying DHCP, it fails. I'm using
DSL, so I can watch the activity lights on the router. They don't blink
at all like they do in 2.0.36 and Win 95.
2. After searching some newsgroups, seems like folks suggested trying
the 3C509 driver, so I reran make config and chose it instead (EL3, I
believe). Now, unbelievably, the kernel won't even build, as make
terminates with the following error on the final ld step:
drivers/net/net.a(Space.o)(.data.init+0x0): undefined reference to
'tc59x_probe'
I'm quite certain no one would release code that wouldn't link with a
standard kernel build, so I must be doing something wrong.
My questions:
1. Is using 3C905 support the right thing to do? (That is, did I do
the right thing in step 1 above)?
2. If not, any ideas as to why the kernel won't build?
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks very much...

Jpub (http://www.jpub.de) is a new integrated intranet platform
developed under
the GPL in Java, using Linux as the development platform. It's based on
the
concept that intranets are intrinsically different from public web sites
and
require a server technology of their own. This includes user tracking, a
flexible permissioning system, a kind of "GUI" and what we call a
"virtual file

No, that's unfortunatly not it... The ISP I have is myself, ie. it is

And further more, I have no problems using http thru the dialin number

Yes although you don't describe what your Net connection comprises of.
However any extra items are generally available via the Net.

I think you can gain a better understanding of how things work, which
can be interesting/challenging.

The HOWTO files (/usr/doc/HOWTO) will cover such things and have links
to other useful info via the web. You will probably need to have a look
at...
NET3-HOWTO - Linux networking
PPP-HOWTO - setting up PPP for your internet connection
ISP-Hookup-HOWTO - name suggests content ? ;-)
mini/Diald - Dial daemon for automating dial out.
IIRC diald does not ship with RedHat but is available at
http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM and assuming you are using a dial up link
will be needed to automate the connection.

Here is the situation.
Have managed to get scripts written so as to connect ppp to one of three
different systems - each needs different passwords/scripts. We'll call them

I have a small network ( 3 machines ).
Linux box is 192.168.1.10
Win98 Box 192.168.1.1
Win95 boxs 192.168.2 and 3
They can all talk to each other hunky dorey. Even managed to get Linux to
print to my Win98 box and Win98 to share onto the Linux ( samba ).
Now want list :
1)Win98 to be able to surf the net from a modem on Linux - autodialup
preferably ( remember I have 3 ppp script setups )
2)Linux to dial up regularly to ISP and get/send mail
3) Win98 to be able to telnet to WorkA and WorkB - again so that Linux
autodials
I have read the ISP, NET and Firewall Howto's and I am afraid I just don't
understand whats going on.
PLEASE can someone give me a blow by blow account of how to do it - I will
even consider payment if someone can figure this out.

Funny thing though, don't know if it will help in a solution... I've
tried to run a tcpdump on my http request and it would seem that my
machine sends the request without any problems and that the http
server, in the other end, sends an acknowledgement back and completes
the handshake. But when my machine then sends the second request,
there never comes any reply/ack back from the server. Keep in mind
that I have no problem surfing under Windows 95/NT!??
