Should I replace my 3C507 with a 3C503, or stick with the 3C507?
I don't have any problems with the 3C507, and recompiling the kernel
to suit the 3C503 isn't a problem. (The 3C507 uses one of the
"experimental" aka not so well supported kernel drivers.)

Go to www.redhat.com. They have lists of supported hardware. Don't be
scared off by that though, often there are drivers availible from 3rd
party vendors to be sure to check with them also.

Are you wasting time while downloading files from slow Internet servers
through your overloaded link? You can get files using full speed of your
local network! Move downloads for night to balance traffic!
DownloadMaster is client-server program for scheduled downloading with
resume feature. Files are downloaded to a local DownloadMaster Server.
Clients order needed URLs and monitor downloads with their Java enabled
browsers. They can log off any time but DM Server will continue downloading
their files. DM can be adjusted to download more files when traffic is
lower (e.g. during night). When clients login next time, downloaded files
will be waiting on the local server.

Matthew Jacob just sent the following message to the linux-RAID mailing
list. If he's right, then I guess the problem isn't with software RAID.
Notice that the original sender also has no problem with 32Gb arrays.
I think your problem may be the combination of kernel 2.2.2 and software
RAID. Ingo has just released a new patch/raidtools for 2.2.3, which I
believe fixes this problem. Try upgrading.

Subject: RH52 printing to HP4 fails only on large jobs
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 16:20:49 GMT
I am having problems printing large jobs from a vanilla RedHat 5.2 box
to a Laserjet 4si (using its JetDirect MIO card) via ip. Hold on to
your seat, this isn't as straightforward as it sounds at first ...
A 400+ page report is generated vi Universe on HPUX 10.20. This report
is pretty much plain text, just very large. The report prints
correctly if I print from HPUX directly to the printer via IP (not
using JetDirect software). However, if I redirect the print job to a
queue on the RedHat box, the printer spits out 20-30 pages and gives
an error: "80 SERVICE 001F", then promptly dies. A power cycle is
needed to get the printer working again.
Printing from HPUX through the Linux queue works fine on all jobs
except the big one - the smaller ones are anywhere between 1-20 pages.
The Linux box has sufficient resources - it's ONLY used for print
spooling, has 128MB RAM and 4GB dedicated to /var/spool/lpd ...
The ONLY difference in printer definitions on the HPUX box is the
destination IP address and queue name (direct: printer_ip & raw;
linux: linux_ip & queuename). This anomaly shows up whether the linux
queue is using the laserjet filter or none at all. The printcap entry
on linux looks like:
pr0_manual:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/pr0_manual:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:rm=pr0:\
:rp=raw:
(pr0 is listed in the /etc/hosts file)
The inability to print this report correctly is causing several people
to lose hair. It's being generated at one of the larger local
hospitals. I'd greatly appreciate any help you can offer me in this
matter. Thanks!

No text made it but here is some generic info.
d
Generic info for RH 5.2. Assumption: you installed PPP.
===================================================================
RH puts ppp scripts in /usr/doc/ppp-2.3.5
Copy ppp-on, ppp-on-dialer, options to /etc/ppp.
BTW:I have copied /dev/null to options.
These need to be made execuitable. Execute chmod 755 on ppp-on
and ppp-on-dialer
===================================================================
Modify ppp-on by editing the following:
TELEPHONE, ACCOUNT, PASSWORD
==================================================================
For exec command. put in correct device probably
cua1 (for RH5.2) and modem speed
===================================================================
Edit /etc/resolv.conf and put in ISP nameserver given you by your
ISP.
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
You usually get two from your isp.
====================================================================
execute ppp-on & and monitor logs with
tail -f /var/log/messages.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
OR:
Control Pannel: Modem configuration. Select
correct device. (used in ppp-on script)
===================================================================
Control Pannel: Network Configurator: Routing: Defaults blank
PPP0 will use this so needs a blank here.
===================================================================
Network Configurator: Names: insert ISP
nameserver addresses.
===================================================================
System Configurator: PPP/SLIP/PLIP: Configurations, Add
Fill in Hardware, Communication. Assumes PAP not
required - If things do not work check with ISP.
==================================================================
Save quit. Verify /etc/resolv.conf has your ISP
addresses.
==================================================================
The linuxconf sets up most things but does not
setup the ppp-on script - that must be done by hand.
==================================================================
Testing:
cd /etc/ppp
execute ppp-on
Ping locally between your network machines to insure your ok.
Ping some net address by ip number like 10.220.10.120. Once ppp
is connected.
Verify your name server working, ping boston.com or do an
nslookup microsoft.com
When not dialed in ping someother box locally by name
to insure yor local resolution is working say if
done by the /etc/hosts and /etc/lmhosts.
=============================================================
If things do not work turn on debugging or up the level of
debugging. Edit the scripts and put debug 7 in there.
For LCP errors two common causes are the ISP is not responding
to you - he's down or you and the ISP are out of sync on PAP.

Well, there are two "poor" programs involved in this:
- The rather buggy BSD lpd running on Linux.
- The rather buggy lpd implementation inside the JetDirect device.
The HP one is unchangeable (actually, you can probably get a firmware
upgrade or something, but that's too much trouble).
You can change or go around the linux lpd by either using a program
like netcat or a Perl quickie to spit the print jobs into the HP's
port 9100, or you can replace BSD entirely with LPRng (which has the
ability to print to random ports built-in).
LPRng is probably recommended for any "real" installations, anyway, so
that's what I'd suggest.
There are discussions of all of these things in the Printing HOWTO.

I have a small network that I have been put in charge of. It consists of
about 10 computers, mostly running 95 few running 98 and two people running
NT 4 and a separate redhat box for myself. I have also recently acquired a
128k frame relay line. I have that connected to a linux box. It's a redhat
5.2 machine w/ a 2.0.36 kernel. It's a dual homed box, one for the local
network, 192.168.1. and the other for the Internet connection. We only have
5 valid IP's. After much help on irc I have configured my system to the
*best* that I think I can do. I am asking for help because, the network is
not right. On the linux box, I can access any site on the internet but on
the client machines I cannot. For example www.amazon.com does *not* open on
any client machine, same goes for www.aj.com and various other sites. How I
would like the network to be configured is that I would like to assign the
one valid IP to the linux box, (gateway) one IP to one of the NT boxes, and
one to the other linux box that I have. That still leaves me w/ two valid
IP's to have for the future. The others only really need www access. But I
can't see why I would want to cut off ftp, irc, icq... I really would like
to try to figure this out, but I feel that this is now getting beyond me,
and I would like some help if at all possible. If anyone could offer some
help, please let me know. Below is my rc.firewall script
#!/bin/bash
ipfwadm -I -f #flush input rules
ipfwadm -F -f #flush forwarding rules
ipfwadm -O -f #flush output rules
arp -Ds <IP-of-the-router> eth0 netmask 255.255.255.248 pub
route add -host <IP-of-the-NT-box> dev eth0
arp -Ds <IP-of-the-NT-box> eth1 pub
ipfwadm -F -a masquerade -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 #setup the masq
#ipfwadm -F -a deny #when I uncomment this, nothing works.
ipfwadm -F -a accept -b -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D
<IP-of-the-IP-before-the-router>/29
/usr/bin/fetchmail
#EOF
I was given the subnet of 255.255.255.248 to use with my IP's. I think is
part of my problem. Please keep in mind that I am not network certified in
anything and that this is just, as I said, the *best* thing that I came up
with. It works but it's obviously not right. Right now only the people on
the 192.168.1. network can see each other, as in the NT box isn't seen by
the 192.168.1. people. Some people told me that I should upgrade the
kernel, to a newer 2.2 version, and they also said that ipfwadm isn't
supported, and that I should use ipchains. Is this true? If there is some
thing else that I should get, someone please let me know.
Thank you to anyone in advance

Yowza-let's try that again:
I'm having the same problem (that is to say, my ethernet card suddenly
decided that it was busy every time I try to insert the module, although it
still works under windows.) I am not using a custom kernel, just a stock RH
5.2 one, and it worked fine in the past...I have done no low-level driver
type stuff and have not changed any hardware.
now-
To attempt a solution, I compiled a new kernel, making sure that I had the
appropriate option selected as "module", and no other ethernet devices
included at all. I still got the same message when trying to insert the
module manually, or just start the eth0 interface:
/lib/modules/2.0.36/net/3c501.o: init_module: Device or resource busy eth0
initialization delayed
Next, I compiled a new kernel making sure that I had the appropriate option
selected as part of the kernel (not a module). Now, when I start the
interface, the message is just: eth0 initialization delayed
so-
I read the HOWTO-Ethernet:
3) After booting, do a cat /proc/ioports and verify that the full
iospace that the card will require is vacant.
I don't really understand what this means, but I can follow directions, so I
did this. The HOWTO continues:
If you are at 0x300 then
the ne2k driver will ask for 0x300-0x31f. If any other device driver
has registered even one port anywhere in that range, the probe will
not take place at that address and will silently continue to the next
of the probed addresses. A common case is having the lp driver reserve
0x378 or the second IDE channel reserve 0x376 which stops the ne
driver from probing 0x360-0x380.
indeed, their was an IDE channel at 376. Unfortunately, the HOWTO did not
say what to do about this problem. I'll RTFM, I just need some context for
what steps I need to take to fix this (it this is indeed what is causing the
problem)
Thanks in advance-Ben

Subject: Boot hangs at Ethernet probe... Help!

In an attempt to get my RTL8029 ethernet card working, I added
the line '/sbin/modprobe ne io=0x6800' to /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.
Now, booting hangs at the 'NE*000 ethernet probe at 0x6800:'
line.
I tried booting into single user mode using 'linux single' at the
LILO prompt, but had the same problem. How can I boot to undo the
damage? Booting from floppy with 'mount root=/dev/hdb2' failed
also.
