I use Linux as a firewalling router for corporate intranets. The firewall and
networking configuration can sometimes get more complicated and demanding
than your average Internet firewall. I have found that the "out of the box"
Linux tunable parameters need to be changed in order to avoid memory realted
crashes and errors. I have made changes based on conjecture, information
found on dejanews, advice from others and trial-and-error. It seems that I
could have saved some trouble if I had a complete reference on how to tune a
Linux system for optimum performance for specific environments. Does such a
resource exist in an online docuement or book?

I appreciate any help anyone can offer and thank you for your time.

If you wanna logon to your Linux server, you should configure SambA as a
logon server and be sure that the domain name is equal to the workgroup
name!

Look at the SMB-HOWTO /usr/doc/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO. Also look at man
smbpasswd.
Encryption = y.  See NET-3-HOWTO on /etc/hosts /etc/lmhosts and
/etc/networks.

SambA only works over IP and not over NCP.
What you could do is install marsnwe this is a Netware 3.12 emulator
(works great) and use the system as a gateway.
Or you setup NFSGW on you Netware server and make a NFS mount from the
Linux box to your Netware server and give rights on them that way the
windows clients use the Netware server ass gateway.

But I think the marsnwe is the best solution for you (be sure you have a
netware 3.12 installation set, since you need the sys:public files) or
if you have a IT manager with some moeny, than you can buy the Netware
4.10 version native on Linux (that really is great!).

Ok i am running rh 5.1 on a p II celeron @ 450 with 128mb of ram first
issue is that i got quakeworld running for quake...and i connected to
a server and my ping is about 30 higher in linux and i can go straight
in to windows on the same computer after rebooting and connecting and
it gave me a 50-70 ping like normal instead of 80-110 like in linux...
packet loss was the same... pretty much... curious enough i finally
got my second bchannel for 128k isdn to connect but it dowlnoads still
slower than in windows...is there some kind of tweakin i need to do i
use kppp to connect to my isp and it works fine everytime ...
(i even got ip masquerading to work and ippacket forwardiing so my
networked computers can use my isdn) what could make it be worse
connectino than windows? MTU settings? i just can't figure this out

other issues:
1) my desktop does this bullcrap in afterstep and fwvm2 where when i
move stuff arond its all jerky and flickery ... like i'll move a
netscape window around and it flickers and is not smooth at all ! when
i move it across...look im trying my hardest to get away from linux
hehe

2) linux says i have 64mb of memory allocated and available...i have a
128mb stick of 8ns sdram...i dont think so...i used this command in
LILO and putting it in lilo.conf ( apend="mem=95M" ) is that not
supposed to work? help!

3) i can't get window maker to install because it needs Proplist and i
un rpm'd proplist and tried to run ./install in the directory and it
wouldn't install...nothing works and it says i still need it when i
try to install window maker rpm's dunno whats going on here...

4) im interested in setting up a router...i live in beaumont TX and
ADSL gets here in about 20 days ... i have a network and plan on
setting up a 486 66 with 16ram as a router...any suggestions it should
just work the same way as i have it on my computer now right? just ip
masquerading...dial in with whatever etc...

Hello,
I am wondering if you have had any success in doing this. I have two
computers. One is a Windows 98 system and the other is running RedHat

references to making linux act as a proxy, but not to connect to one.
Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: modem unavailable after reset button pressed
Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 20:03:33 GMT

I had a 28.8Kbps internal modem in my Redhat5.2 system working fine. In
the middle of a dial-up session with Netscape going someone's little kid
pressed the reset button on my computer. Since then, I get messages
like:
> device not available or resource busy

or

> modem not available

when I try to use programs like ezppp or minicom. When I try seyon it
gives me a whole slew of messages to that effect. I get the same
message when I try > echo "ATDT" > /dev/modem. The symbolic link from
/dev/modem to /dev/cua1 is okay, and I have tried removing /dev/cua1 and
remaking it using the /dev/MAKEDEV script to no avail. I checked using
find for any LCK files and there are none. I can use minicom when
logged in as root at which time there exists the file
/var/lock/LCK..modem and it goes away when I exit minicom. But I still
can't dial the phone from minicom even then. I checked using the
setserial command and it tells me that cua1 is on IRQ3 and everything is
fine.
Since I kind of wanted to upgrade the modem anyway, I got a 56kbps
_non_ PNP modem and nothing changed. I also got a shop to test my
28.8kpbs modem and they said it tested fine.
I'm pretty sure there is some lock file or something somewhere causing
the system to think the modem is busy, but I can't find it for the life
of me.
Can anyone please help??? I'm at my wits end and of course whenever I
try calling anyone around here (Seattle area) they all start asking me
if I clicked on this that or the other thing, totally clueless that
anything can possibly exist outside of Bill's world.

If possible, please cc any replies to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (I
have to do this from work due to the Catch-22 problem with my broken
home communications system).
Thanks very much.

Enable pppd debugging with the debug option
pppd debug ...
or put debug inot /etc/ppp/options. That will give you a clue. It is

RH users can find a wealth of useful information in /usr/doc/HOWTO. Included
there is a file called IPX-HOWTO that should answer all your questions.

Chacing proxies or NAT?

Caching proxies go and read the squid manual (Squid is a very good
caching proxy!) and for NAT go and see IP Masquerading this is a kernel
option. You need to enable firewalling first before you can enable ip
masquerading

This is really, really not true. I work on, for and with Unix, don't
write for DOS or Windows, and nor do roughly 70% of the 80 people in
my office. Probably around 3000 other people also write software for
the same company, and I have no reason to believe the proportions are
much different there.

In Xwindows, when you install a new application, putting itself on a windows
manager's menu is not one of it's jobs. These windows mamanger menus are
considered user's-preference, so you'll have to edit it yourself.

Very possibly you have this script in a directory which is not in your path.
If you go into the directory in which it resides and type (assuming script
is its name) "./script" and it still doesn't work, check to make sure the
permissions are right and that the path to the shell interpreter at the
begining of the file is right, ie #!/usr/local/bin/perl. Make sure that perl
is really in /usr/local/bin.

Go into your XF86Config file (On redhat its in /etc/X11/) and swap the 75dpi
and 100dpi FontPath lines, so the 100dpi one comes first. Note: you have to
actually have the 100dpi fonts for this to work. Restart X, and Netscape
will use a 33% larger font.

Hello all. Earlier, I could connect to a host machine on my network via
smbclient. However, after configuring my linux box as a DNS caching
server, I can no longer make a connection. Here is the exact message I
receive:

security=share
SMBtconX failed. ERRSRV - ERRinvnetname (invalid network name in tree
connect.)
Perhaps you are using the wrong sharename, username or password?
Some servers insist that these be in uppercase.

Interestingly, I can still use smbclient to view a list of shares
available on the hosts in my network. However, I have somehow lost the
ability to connect.

I stopped samba, cleared the /var/locks/samba directory, then restarted
samba. However, I continue to receive the same results. Does anyone
have any other ideas I could try?

Thanks in advance for any help. Please let me know if you need further
