Hello, I'm from the NT camp, however I decided after doing some research
that linux makes a better firewall, and possibly a better server. I am now
running a single floppy firewall based on freeBSD and IPChains and NAT. I
have a working configuration and have put my network behind it. Now I would
like to secure this script without breaking it. I have completely failed
because every time I do anything to secure it, I break the port forwarding.
What I would like is something that let's only the forwarded port traffic
in, anything out, and is protected from common attacks such as spoofing. It
would also be nice if denied or rejected packets from hacking attempts were
logged to the screen so I could see them real time. Here is the working
config where x.x.x.x is the internet address. Any help is greatly
appreciated.

Hi everybody,
I'm looking for a Web-Browser that I can use on an Sparc Station 5 that is
running on Sparc-Linux (Redhat 5.2).
Is here anybody, who can give me a hint, what is the best one to use on
such a system?
The bad thing is that one can't compile Netscape by himself. :-((

Hi,
I'm trying to set up a network card on a Compaq DeskPro XL with Red Hat 5.2.
The XL has a built in AMD Lance chip. The Ethernet-HOWTO says:
>The problem with this Compaq machine however is that the PCI directory is
>loaded in high memory, at a spot where the Linux kernel can't (won't) reach.
>Result: the card is never detected nor is it usable (sideline: the mouse won't

Well, my mouse does work, but I can't get the card to be detected. Rather that
muck about and get that card working I thought I would try another card.
The question is, will another PCI card (Like a 3Com 3c905) have the same
problem? Do I need to go to a ISA card?
Any help greatly appreciated,
Simon

Take a look at www.dyndns.org. They will assign your dynamic IP to a
hostname within thier domain. See my headers. Seems to work fine. I guess
you need to have your machine up 100% of the time but if that isn't an issue
for you then it will work fine. Mailserver running. I am curious what will
happen if somebody sends me mail while my system is down. I guess the remote
system will just try and resend later. I hope-)

Yes. This is the standard use for IP Masq. You usually assign
192.168.x.x static addresses behind the firewall.

You can set up a mail server. Depending on how dynamic your address is
it may not be reliable. A cable modem or dsl where the address changes
once in a blue moon, no problem. A dial-up account that changes once a
day, maybe. An intermittent dial-up account, with severe
restrictions. The intermittent account will need some else to run the
primary MX host. You can then use fetchmail to breing the mail inside
the firewall. The only thing you HAVE to have is a name. There are
services that provide names for dynamic IP's. I used to use ml.org and
had the primary MX be my ISP. This was when I was on an intermittent
dial-up account. Your ISP has to agree to to do this. It cost me $30
every six months for this service in addition to the dial-up
account. I'm on DSL now and do my own primary mail hosting. My IP is
technicly dynamic, but hasn't changed in the six months I've been
connected.

Sounds like you have a file in the print queue which can't be deciphered by the
printer driver. Try using lpc to clear it.

If your touch screen works similar to another pointing device, I'd
start by poking around in the kernel source code. Most of it is pretty
well commented. You should also find some documentation included with
the kernel on how to write patches and drivers, I'm not sure how much
though. Good luck! It's great to see more and more vendors taking an
interest in writing drivers for Linux.
Remember to make your code 64-bit clean, those of us with DEC Alphas
will appreciate it. :)

You can always use the Norse gods: Loki, Odin, Thor, etc...
Make a server Asgard (home of the Norse gods)

Subject: Need command to probe for ethernet card in Redhat 5.2
Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 19:13:51 GMT
Hi, I am having a little problem finding the configuration utility that the
installer runs during installation. It lets you pick an ethernet card and
then it probes to see if it can find it. When I installed linux, the
installer asked me if I wanted to configure LAN but I went to no because I
didn't have the irq # and stuff.
When I type 'setup' it brings up pretty much all the configuration utilities
like the installer except the one to install the network.
If anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it.
