Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could advise me on connecting my Linux box to
a WinNT box so as to be able to print from Linux on that printer. ANY
guidelines for such a setup would be MOST appreciated as I am still
quite a novice in the Linux network field.
Linux Box
-PPro 200
-Slackware Linux v4.0.0
-Kernel v2.2.4
-Samba v2.0.3
-Other packages shipped with the distrib.
WinNT Box
-WinNT Workstation v4.00, sp4
-TCP/IP network already fully installed/operational
Cheers

Subject: Question about masquarading
Date: Sat, 03 Apr 1999 11:22:35 GMT
Hallo!
yesterday i have configured my Linux box that should work as Firewall.
I have the connection so i think it is working correctly, but i wanted to
test it
ans so i have started TCPDUMP to log all activitys on the first network card
(eth0 connected to a cablemodem).
In the log i can find at diferen places my IP-adress of the machine that is
connected to the second network cart (eth1, internal network).
The Line looks for example like this:
11:44:58.784973 ns1.telekabel.at.domain > 192.168.0.4.1025: 1* 1/2/2 (136)
(DF)
11:44:58.954973 pop.telekabel.at.pop3 > 192.168.0.4.1026: S
1399965928:1399965928(0) ack 77695 win 8760 <mss 1460> (DF)
11:44:58.984973 pop.telekabel.at.pop3 > 192.168.0.4.1026: P 1:136(135) ack 1
win 8760 (DF)
11:44:58.484973 pop.telekabel.at.pop3 > 192.168.0.4.1026: P 136:179(43) ack
23 win 8760 (DF)
11:44:58.584973 pop.telekabel.at.pop3 > 192.168.0.4.1026: P 179:222(43) ack
38 win 8760 (DF)
And now the questions:
- Is my masquarading not working?
- How can i correct this problem?
On the Linux-computer i have the SuSE 5.2 with kernel 2.0.33
I have started only the Firewall and Masquarading (the installation of the
proxy server is not ready yet).
The masquarading settings are:
MSQ_START="yes"
MSQ_NETWORKS="192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0"
MSQ_DEV="eth0"
MSQ_MODULES="ip_masq_cuseeme ip_masq_ftp ip_masq_irc ip_masq_quake
ip_masq_raudio ip_masq_vdolive"
Thanx!

I've been using KDE since I started using RedHat. You don't need to get
an entire distribution just to get one piece of the puzzle that you want.

Subject: DHCP config...
Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 11:18:24 +0200
Hi there,
After having read the relevant Howto's and newsgroups, I'm still unable to
get my IP address from a DHCP server (although WinNT machines on the same
net obtain successfully their address from the same server).
PS: the net card performs perfectly if I assign a fixed IP address...
PS2: driver for the net card are build within the kernel - no modules.
I tried with two different versions of Linux. Here are the error messages
for each of them:
* with Linux 2.0.36:
First test:
'dhcpcd -r -d' reports:
bind (openSendSocket): Address Already in use
'ifconfig' reports (for the eth0 net interface):
inet addr: 0.0.0.0
bcast: 255.255.255.255
Second Test:
'dhcpcd -d' reports:
no DHCPOFFER messages
The eth0 has disapeard from 'ifconfig'...
* with Linux 2.2.4:
'dhcpcd -d' or 'dhcpcd -r -d' reports:
ioctl SIOCSIFBRADDR (ifconfig): Cannot assign requested address
The eth0 interface doesn't show up with 'ifconfig'
Any clue ?

Did you upgrade PPP? I think that the latest version ATM is 2.3.6, and
you need at least 2.3.5 to use it under the newer kernel. You may also
have to re-install or re-compile PPP under the new kernel if it was
already installed.

IP forwarding is necessary for routing
IP masquerading is necessary for making a network appear as 1 IP address to
another
network
IP masquerading can not work without IP forwarding
We've had some experience with 2 network cards in a system, we've had the
best luck when
the 2 cards were of different types (ie. 1 NE2000 and 2 3com). I've heard
this 'feature' has
been resolved in newer versions.
I would suggest using the DOS based config software that came with the cards
to set the
io addresses and irq. Turn off pnp.
You may need to add the append line to your /etc/lilo.conf. Something like
this:
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36
label=linux
root=/dev/hda2
append= "ether=10,300,eth0 ether=11,280,eth1"
read-only
other=/dev/hda1
label=dos
table=/dev/hda
Good luck.

Subject: postupgrade to 2.2.1 kernel ppp problem
Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 09:08:00 +0300
Recently I upgraded my kernel to 2.2.1 wanting to install ipchains instead
of ipfwadm.
I have a ppp connection and an ethernet on my linux box which connects our
internal private network to the internet.
After the upgrade the ppp connection doesn't work anymore.
I configured the firewall according to the instructions from the man pages
but the ppp connection doesn't work.
When I run ifconfig ppp0 I receive the correct answer but when I ask about
the status of the network with
netstat -nr there is no ppp0 device.
Can anyone tell me where is the error ?
Fortunately I kept the 2.0.34 kernel and it works this way (ppp and ipfwadm
for masquerading).

Maybe I'm missing something, but...
If the P75 system is acting as a firewall, why is the default route to your
internal network interface?
What is the default route of the AMD350 system? It probably should be the

You must use IP masquerading or IP Chaining, since the 192.168.x.x number
will not work out on the internet. They are for local networks only.

Jim,
netstat -a
will give a rather lengthy (usually) output of all open ports and sockets on
the machine. Then you could use something like lsof to determine which
application was using the port. You will have to find the sources for lsof and
compile them.
