Mike, I got the new 0.98.3 version and saw the README.masq file, but
unfortunately, it will not compile on my Linux box, kernel version 2.0.36.
Says it can't find a couple of files (I forget the names) when doing the
"make depend" and it aborts. Even the guy who runs
http://juanjox.linuxhq.com/ says it won't work on 2.0.x kernels. I've
already tried upgrading to the 2.2.x-series kernels (2.2.3 is what I tried),
and everything seemed to work okay (with ipchains), but I couldn't get it to
do port-forwarding properly (via ipmasqadm). So I'm sorta stuck between a
rock and a hard place here. I'm currently using the 0.98.2 version of
diald, which seems to be the latest version that will work with the 2.0.x
kernels.
You got any other suggestions?

I was having the problems indeicated above as well, and adding the
IP's of the other machines on the network to the /etc/hosts file did
the trick for me.

Last official KDE release was 1.1. There have been a few minor updates, by
security reasons, and a few updates that were specific to a distribution by
packaging issues, so the numbers are not really comparable, because if you
merge the security updates in a single, say, rpm update, it deflates the
number, and if you need to make another release by packaging reasons, it
inflates it.
Anyway: the tarballs have latest released dource, and the rpms probably have
the same, or very close.

I'm trying to get Samba working with an NT Workstation with SP 3. I can see
the Linux PC in the Network Neighborhood but it spits back an error that the
path is inaccessible and the path was not found. I have turned on
encryption and have set the smb.conf file up for share access.
Does any one have any ideas or can someone e-mail me a working smb.conf file
so I can compare it to what I currently have?
Thanks in advance,

Make it the box that is always on or the linux box.
The CMN login on the 98 must be the exact same login and pass as an accoutn
on the linux box.
You must set us shares on both systems.
It works on mine :)

Actually, it should be fairly easy to create a screen save that emulates
the BSOD. You could even throw in some random "interesting" text.
"System has become unstable - please re-boot with Linux"
"System has become unstable - Bill Gates passed Go - please send $200"
"System has become unstable - please re-install"
you get the picture ;-)

Subject: named forwarding-only
Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 23:14:13 -0600
I'm currently running a cacheing nameserver (named) on my Slackware Linux
3.5 box (kernel upgraded to 2.0.36). The version of BIND I'm running is
8.1.2. I was looking a web page
(http://personal1.iddeo.es/ret005lc/diald-win-e.html#runnamed) that
describes how you can force named to restart (the desired effect is to clean
the cache) whenever diald closes the ppp connection. But unfortunately,
whenever named comes back up, it attempts to contact one of the root
nameservers which forces the ppp link right back up. How can I keep it from
doing that? Better yet, how can I make named a forwarding-only nameserver
that does not cache anything? The web page I gave shows how to do it with
BIND 4.x, but what is the equivalent way to do it with BIND 8.x? (I set up
my cacheing nameserver pretty much identically to the method described in
the DNS-HOWTO.)
(BTW - I'm running diald version 0.98.2. I know that there is a 0.98.3
version out that's supposed to fix the problem where TCP packets get dropped
while the link is coming up. As the web page I gave above describes, a DNS
request uses UDP which isn't affected by this bug - ideally, I want a DNS
request to bring the link up before the client gets a chance to open a TCP
connection. Unfortunately, 0.98.3 does not seem to compile on my 2.0.36
kernel, and upgrading to 2.2.x is not an option. I'm exploring other
alternatives at this time, to tide me over until cable modem service becomes
available in my area in a few months.)

Try hyphens instead of underscores. I.e. abc-1 rather than abc_1
RFC1035 makes certain naming suggestions, in order to avoid
conflicts between DNS names and other naming standards that
build on DNS. The suggested naming standard only uses letters,
numbers, and the hyphen (and avoids dots and slashes).
If you stick with the suggested standard, BIND shouldn't complain.

I had the same problem and never got it solved. Would like to see if
there is a solution. Other products DO provide this ability, but they
cost much more than WinGate.
In the end, I gave up and changed the configuration of my network. I
use my Linux desktop box as my proxy server on my network. I have a
Linux laptop and a Win98 box on the network as well, and it works
perfectly with both machines. Using Linux with IP Masquerading and IP
forwarding works better than WinGate on Windows and it has the added
advantage of being free!
Now if I can just get diald working correctly... :)
