Hi, I'm a linux quasi-newbie.

I am trying to use linux running mars_nwe to make a cd-rom drive available as
a driver letter to my netware network.

I am running redhat 5.2, I have mars_nwe running (i think)

How do I log onto my new netware server?

Is there a way I can make this linux box just boot up, make the cdrom drive
available to the netware network without any user intervention? (ie signing
on, mounting the cdrom, etc)

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Please email any response to this to [EMAIL PROTECTED], as I don't really
know how to use newsgroups very well. (I'm using dejanews right now.)

Thanks!

I am trying to set up UserDir so that one can type in www.domain.com/~user/
and get the web site for that user in /home/user/public_html/ . I have
changed the srm.conf file so that it is set up properly for this use. I
have also changed the access directory to allow access from outside users to
/home/*/public_html/ My normal web access directory is /home/httpd/html/
Once I get all this set up I restart httpd by using kill -HUP PID However
when I go to www.domain.com/~user/ I get error #403 access forbidden. What
am I doing wrong? I am using RH 5.2 and apache 1.8

I downloaded X-IPS's xisp-2.5p4.tgz file and
tried "make".

I then have errors:
  setkey(ukey); /* insert it in crypt's machine */ <------ undefined

Those two functions are called a file pcode.c.

Could you please tell me how to fix those errors?

Thank you.

If you *have* to use _ characters RTFD. Bind v8 can be configured to
reject, moan or silent accept them. However RTRFC and discover that
*THE USE OF _ IS OUTLAWED* and rejecting them entirely is RFC
complaint. In short unless you are landed with them for some strange
reason use - instead.

I'm looking for information on how to setup a machine with multiple
gateways...for instance, I have an IP aliased net card as follows:

eth0: a.b.c.d through gateway w.x.y.z
eth0:0: e.f.g.h through gateway r.s.t.u

Now as it stands, eth0's gateway is the default and 0:0's is only used
for its subnet.

I'd like to use Linux's MultiPath option to make both gateways used
equally. I can set them both up as default gw's, but only one will get
used at a time. How do I tell it I want them both used equally?

Any help is appreciated.

It turned out to be "xstartup", and simply changing "twm" to "kde" did the trick.

ipportfw and ipautofw are two utilities that will do this for you (they

Something to try is to set up the Windows broadcast address on your
local network, and tell samba to announce to the address, i.e.

route add host 255.255.255.255 eth1

ANd in your smb.conf, it is something like:

remote announce = 255.255.255.255

Sounds like what you really want is a X11 program that can do pop3 and smtp
transfers for multiple accounts. If you're using the K desktop, there is a
mail application (kmail) included that you can use in this manner. If you
don't use K, there are a number of other email clients that can act like
Pegasus and Outlook; just check on www.freshmeat.net for a number of them.

However, if you want to use Pine or Elm to do your email, you can continue
to use Fetchmail to get email from multiple accounts. Just add more lines to
your .fetchmailrc to deal with the other accounts, as many as you like; type
'man fetchmail' for more info. Then you can use procmail (type 'man
procmail' and 'man procmailrc' for more info) to move the inbound email to
other accounts or folders of the same account on your own box.

Sendmail is much harder, but you can find a lot of info at www.sendmail.org.
I'd recommend switching to qmail instead (try www.qmail.org) because it's a
lot easier to configure and maintain.

We do something similar. I would setup a separate system to act as a
firewall.
It will make it simpler to maintain. You'll need to add a route to this
system
from your current default gateway.

If another system isn't practical, I'd use a 2nd card and try to implement
the
same thing all on one system.

I would not just connect the 2 networks.

You may not have networking set up correctly. When you have no router, and
the default gateway is set to your ISP, the computer tries to send all
unkown destination packets to your ISP.

All machines on your local net need to be on the same subnet, and you need
one computer to act as a router to your ISP. This requires you rebuild the
kernel for routing, IP masquerading, and possibly firewalling. You may want
to investigate the 2.2 kernel for this box, so you can use the new ipchain
tool to build a firewall.

I'm surprised you haven't been hacked already.

If you select Y for "Network device support?", using the plain-jane

There are various ways to enable PPP beyond the kernel configuration,

others use one of the many pppd configuration programs. I guess when
the configuration programs work things are good, but I *know* when
they don't work that things are bad. Understanding the basics of how
something works is better, the enemy of good enough.

I don't have your original numbers in front of me here. Those numbers look
correct to me for a standard network setup -- I have forgotten if you had a
different netmask. Were you told to use 255.255.255.0?

Pending that answer, here's some things you can try.

Before you do anything else, type 'route' in an Xterm or something and save
the results -- you may need to post them.

Then try 'route add default gw 1.2.3.4', where 1.2.3.4 is the name of your
gateway. Then try pinging some names and numbers and see what you get. If
it's working, then we need to modify your installation to set up that default
route for you. Tell us what distro you're using and someone will probably
know how :-)

If the route add default gw line doesn't work, post the original results from
the route command and let us noodle about it a bit. :-)

I had a linux box that mysteriously dropped its default route about 5 minutes
after booting up, and I never did figure out what the problem was. I just
logged in and added the route after every reboot -- it was a bit of a pain,
but I rebooted it so infrequently that it was workable.

Subject: Problem with Squid 2.1 patch2: Dnsserver not starting?
Date: Tue, 06 Apr 1999 20:59:40 GMT

Hello gurus,

I've got a problem with my home network: I've compiled squid 2.1 patch 2. All
went very well, and I fired it up. After creating the cache I ran RunCache.
This starts out nicely (dnslookup is going well) then it fires up 5 dnsserver
processes. Or at least it tries. After the default timeout per process it
states: WARNING: cannot run /usr/local/squid/dnsserver process. Squid happily
runs right until I make a client request, at what time is states that there
are no dnsservers and restarts the whole proxy. If however I start the
dnsserver by hand it does not abort.

How is this possible? Has anybody seen this behaviour before, and perhaps
solved it?

Currently the Linux box is acting as an ISDN dial-up router for my home
network, so I have ipfwadm to do the NAT and some firewalling. Netscape and
other programs don't complain when I don't use the proxy, so that
configuration is ok, I suppose. And since the dns lookup test goes well when
squid starts, I can't see anything wrong in the resolv.conf file either????

Any ideas?

VanderB.

What are the symptoms of the problem and what type of 3com card are you
talking about (i.e. 3c905b...) Can you do ping the nearest
gateway/default router, 127.0.0.1, your ip address? Do you have a default
gateway set up?
