I've been using Slackware Linux for a year now, and I have a question that
may sound stupid. My PC is connected to the internet through a dial-up modem
connection, and currently I have no local networked computers. I was
browsing auction items on eBay this morning with Netscape 4.05 and only had
one browser window open. I connected with ppp-go, and there were no other
sessions active (no ftp, telnet, etc.) and I had no other applications
running. I noticed that my hard drive was working like crazy and xload's
graphical chart was maxed out. I launched TOP, and saw that FIND was using
almost all resources, then SORT kicked in using most resources. I use NETKBD
to monitor modem send/receive (blinking keyboard cap lock & scroll lock LED's
instead of an external modem's LED's), and they indicated data send/receive
even though the web page and all graphics were loaded that I was viewing. I
know that Win95 will occasionally do virtual memory housekeeping, but I don't
think that is what Linux was doing. Do I have anything to worry about?

Hello!

For Internet-Connection purposes I have to enter in then new booted Linux
box:

echo 7 > /proc/sys/netipv4/ip_dynaddr
isdnctrl dialmode ippp0 auto
squid

and - for checking the connections - on two other consoles tail -f
/var/log/messages and tail ..../cache.log

How can I do this at bootup time?

Thank You,

Hi!

I'm trying to make a internetserver for my school, first of all it
should work as a caching proxy, enabling me to teach a whole class in
the computerroom. At my school we only have one ISDN line, attached to
one machine. Since there are NO funds for new progs. I would make a
linuxbox on what I have got (Intel Pentium 90, 32 mb ram, standard
eide drives (total of 500 mb, small I know), atapi CDRom ET4000
graphics and NE2000 network interface.) So far so good, when I have it
up and running it should be possible to get some funds from the
headmaster for a new and larger HD.
I have installed Red Hat 5.1, Samba and XFree86 among other things,
and established contact between my Win95-box and the Linux-box (I'm
able to ping and the Linux-box appears in Network neighbourhood on the
win95-box) but when I try doubleclicking the Linux-box in network
neighbourhood I get asked for a password. I have tried every password
possible, but I get refused every time :^(
Can you help me finding the place to find the "default" password so I
can change/disable it?

Thanx in advance

Try SyGate. Its easy to configure, works well, and only costs about CDN$50.00.
You can get it right off the web as shareware.

You are absolutely right. My modem was in fact using a different interupt.
And I have changed it.
It is now working great.

Thank you so much for your input.

I'm installing ne.o into Linux 2.0.36 (Red Hat 5.2), and
getting strange response ... (other modules load OK)

root:/etc> insmod -p -v ne io=0x300 irq=10
/lib/modules/preferred/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_open
/lib/modules/preferred/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol ethdev_init
/lib/modules/preferred/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_debug
/lib/modules/preferred/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_interrupt
/lib/modules/preferred/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol NS8390_init
/lib/modules/preferred/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_close

Am I overlooking something here? Or was ne.o built incorrectly
before it was distributed?

How to fix?

Thanks for the help!

IP does not run over LocalTalk, you can only run Appletalk over it.
Apparently it works, as you observe file sharing and printing working.

What you can run (from the Mac end anyway) over Appletalk is 'IP
encapsulation', selected in the Open Transport TCP/IP control panel as
'connect over Appletalk (Mac IP)'. I'm not aware of any support for this
in netatalk, though I could be wrong. You could try it and see if it
works.

my real email address contains the word spam. If the spammers gather my

note: I hardly receive any spam whatsoever !, ie maybee 1 per month.

Hello.

I have been looking around the internet for help on virtual hosting a
website.
I have seen the option in the httpd.conf and supposedly have it set right. I
have the IP Address for it, assigned by my ISP, but I still can't connect to
it.
I think it is becuase I have to bind that IP to the server, but I can't
figure out how to do that.
If any of you have any information on how to setup a Virtual Host on Redhat
4.2, please let me know.
I am running Apache 1.1.3.
I hope that helps you guys out.

Here's something even more puzzing. This is NOT my reply, the original
reply was on December 15 to the same question and this one is dated
January 2.

It appears identical except for the original newshost in the header
which is the same as yours. Apparently you posted this and managed to
make it seem as if I did. Perhaps there is a reasonable explanation
for the forgery but it's not self-evident.

Sure, but A's internet connection only allows some ports. It's behind a
firewall, you know. So, i'd like to use B's router as the default gateway for
the A network, so i can use all ports.
Over wich port will the traffic be routed between A und B? Only one port or
more?
I think only one, but I'm not sure, so, is it possible to bind it to a single
port, maybe 22?

It is my understanding that you have to have smb compile into kernel, but
you can share printers with an NT box without using any samba commands. I
have two network printers in my printer config dialog, both useable, and
both running off separate NT servers. If you are running redhat, use the
control-panel printer tool to set them up. Make sure you have the IP of the
machines to which the printers are connected. Also, be sure you enter them
correctly. Try installing the printers that way, and not using the smb
tool. If you have any more questions, reply via newsgroup or to

I hope this helps. If not, send me an email.
