Subject: [HELP] Linux PPPd via Null-MODEM
Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 13:39:53 +0800

I tried to use Null-MODEM to link 2 Linux computers,
but it seems not working.
(I have no network card this time)
it's slackware, kernel 2.0.0, pppd 2.2.0

Linux A (Server)
pppd 115200 /dev/ttyS1 192.9.200.3:192.9.200.4 defaultroute silent kdebug 7

Link B (Client)
pppd 115200 /dev/ttyS0 192.9.200.4:192.9.200.3 defaultroute kdebug 7

but it seems cannot get connection.
it's strange.
but I tried DOS PPP 0.6 as client to connect Linux A, it works.
why can't I connect these 2 Linux computers??

I'm having the exact same problem. SMC 9425 card works fine under Windows 95
but RedHat 5.2 simply ignores it.

Anyone any suggestions?
Thanks

Subject: Need help with performance
Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 05:06:37 GMT

Hi Everybody,

We're considering using Linux + Apache as a web server. The hardware
is a 4-processor 400 MHz (Xeon) server with 1GB of ram, a RAID controller,
and six disks. We have Redhat 5.2 installed and compiled an SMP version
of the 2.2.2 Linux kernel. For the web server we used the latest 2.0.3
version of Apache.

The scenario: we're bangin' on this web server with a bunch of clients
to try and get a handle on its capacity. Simple static HTML requests,
no heavy CGI yet.

The problem: the server performs well, delivering in excess of 1300
HTTP GET requests per second. But then performance just drops WAAAY
off, like down to 70 connections per second. We're not swapping,
the network isn't saturated (4 x 100Mbit nets), disks are hardly used,
but the system is just crawling. Neither vmstat nor top show anything
unusual. No error messages in the web server. Its puzzling.

Any ideas? Any tips, suggestions, or pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Subject: IPFWADM shows no masquerading entries
Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 19:40:50 -0600

Hello all:

I have a problem with a two box mini network running at home. I cannot
get IPFWADM to successfully masquerade both machines as one when
accessing my ISP over dial-up.

"gagarin", a Caldera OpenLinux 1.3 machine, has the IP address
192.168.0.2.
It runs a caching DNS server (works well) and I use diald to keep a
quasi permanent 33.6k connection to my ISP running from this machine.

"piggie", a Windows 95 box, has the address 192.168.0.1. It's default
gateway is set to be "gagarin" and it's DNS server is also set to be
"gagarin". DNS lookups work fine from "piggie".

The NICs are fast ether net cards from LinkSys and SMC Corp., and are
connected via an SMC EZ Hub 100.

In my /etc/rc.d/rc.local I added the lines

ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.0.1/32 -D 0.0.0.0/0
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.0.2/32 -D 0.0.0.0/0

But I cannot access the internet from "piggie". In fact, the command

ipfwadm -M -l

produces the output

IP masquerading entries

and nothing else!

Can someone please point me in the right direction for resolving this?
Thanks!

Ray

I have a linux system acting as a firewall/masq. I do not have valid IPs on
my internal network hence masq. What I want to do is allow a connection on
a specific port to be routed to an internal computer from the internet. i
don't know if I need additional software or if ipfwadm can do this. I am
using redhat 5.2 kernel 2.0.36-0.7. Example: have smtp routed from the
internet to linux box w/ valid IP to system without valid IP 192.168.x.x.
smtp port only.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I use cookie_jar. It's a small perl script you can run from a shell.
Point any web browser on your network to this as thier proxy. It
blocks ads, cookies, hides your browser type and some other cool
things, all of which are fully configurable via the web browser (newer
versions) or via a config file on the host machine (older versions).

It's at http://www.lne.com/ericm/cookie_jar/

I'm currently using 1.0.15 which is an older version

There is a CGI app similar to that at
http://www.lmi.net/sbooth/cgi-bin/dns.cgi , it has made the source code
available as well. Perhaps that will answer your questions.

I have RH-5.1 with a 2.0.36 kernel and the v0.89 driver is in there.
I avoided a total kernel rebuild by running 'make xconfig' then
selecting both the PCI network cards and the Tulip card
as modules, then running 'make modules' and 'make modules_install'.

I got the module to load by adding the 'alias eth0 tulip' line
to conf.modules.

Nice of those Netgear folks to include Linux instructions and
mark Linux on the box, as it got them a sale of both the card
and the 4-port hub to connect the system to.

The standard C++ language does not support networking, so please leave
comp.lang.c++ off your cross post list when asking this type of

Subject: ppp connection/modem strangeness
Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 22:59:12 -0800

OK, I admit, I'm a newbie. Now, that's out of the way...

I've recently installed RedHat 5.2

I'm having a problem getting my ppp connection going. The ppp software
doesn't activate the modem to dial out. I'm using a USR v.90 56k pnp
configured with isapnptool. I *can* dial out using minicom no problem using
the same device & port setting that I'm putting in the ppp software. (though
I can't establish ppp connection, the modem is dialing & connecting in
minicom).

I've tried the myriad of methods of getting my ppp connection up: ifup,
pppd, the network control panel, configsys (where you set up the ppp0 and
there's a 'connect' button to test the connection, according to the manual)

Sometimes, after tinkering with all the different methods, out of the blue,
the modem will kick in and dial out seeming to just mock me. It will have
been *ages* since I issued any of the commands to startup the
connection...and like it's got a mind of it's own, it will dial out. When
this has happened, there's not a usable network connection established...I
can't even tell if it's staying connected.

Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, or know of any resources I can turn
to for information about my problem? I've looked for info about this in the
group, and can't find anything covering this kind of behavior.

ANY help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Rusty

I have disabled most unnecessary services via the inetd.conf including

Version 5.2

I'm a newbie.. Learning fast. So please forgive. I've searched but
can't find it/Figure it out...

Ok here is what I'm trying to do and have already done.

1. edited the ftpusers account and added anonymous so that if I don't
create a user you can't log into ftp (No anonymous access).

2. Added a entry into the /etc/shells for a bogus shell so that these
users can't telnet in. Called it /etc/true

3. Found in the man pages for ftpaccess that if I create a user and
have it's home dir set to /home/./user that when they ftp in they
should be restricted to the /user dir and not see anything above it.

# 3 is the part I'm having problems with. I create it but they can
still see and go above this level seeing my whole server.

1. Is there a specific user group that I should make these users a
part of the useid is something in the low 500's. I know I'm missing
something simple and stupid but can't find it doc'd anywhere or even a
anon ftp how to that describes this.

Yea I also came from the windows world so I'm a bit screwed up in
linux thinking.

Any help is appreciated..

Thanks.

pppd 2.3.5
rh 5.2

I can connect to the internet fine. However when I try to use demand
dialing pppd, it doesn't work..

if I dont set a remote address, it complains. fine. I set a remote
address and pppd doesnt work, spitting the error:

pppd[465]: ioctl(SIOCSIFDSTADDR): Cannot assign requested address(99)

into /var/log/messages.

/etc/ppp/options :
debug lock modem crtscts /dev/modem 38400 \

        demand ipcp-accept-local ipcp-accept-remote \
        netmask 255.255.255.0 defaultroute

I am at a complete loss at why this happens to only me.

I am trying to connect my Linux Redhat 5.2 machine to my Win98
machine using two SIIG 10Base NICs. Does anyone know what
driver I should use with this card under Linux? I have tried the ne
driver as these are supposed to be NE2000 compatible but I
cannot ping myself?

Thanks -Thomas

I am having trouble getting and Digital PC 5000-266 PII system to use
the build in DEC Chip 21143 ethernet controller. The onboard controller
works fine, when I am in my BORG BODY SUIT (ie Windows NT4.0 SP4) But I
am trying real hard to remove my BORG eye piece, Arm extender and body
suit ;) .

Anyhow enough of the sillyness. The red hat 5.2 CDrom install never
detected this controller, I have re-build a(several) kernals (modular
and monolitic) with the newest tulip.c (24-feb-'99). This kernal find
the controller but end's up with a warning about the transcever being
not found. When I tried a modular kernal I never saw the eth0: device
get reported in the message log. I use the xconfig tool changed the 'Y'
to a 'M' (PCI ether section was still 'Y') make boot; make clean; make
dep; make modules; make modules_install. cpoy the kernel, and
/sbin/lilo. Rebooted.

I'm having the same problem! Except my modem occasionally kicks in out of
the blue and dials as if to mock me. I have tried every method of opening
the ppp connection, and nothing will activate the modem, but I can easily
dial out through the modem in minicom HELP???

I've found a solution... It would seem that the init string that Lasat
had put in the manual to the adapter, wasn't the complete right init
string. So I "stole" it from the inf-file from Win95 and then the http
worked.

Best regards,
