Might be a bad NIC try swapping in a new one, or trading it with one of

Subject: ncpfs to log in Netware 4.11?
Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 11:03:28 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am on a Novell 4.11 network with 2.2 kernel running ncpfs to connect
as a client, primarily working in DOSEmu .9.8.5 within the WordPerfect
DOS shell. I am unable to work effectively because (a) I am not
recognized on the network as a full user -- when I try to use WP Mail
or Calendar or Scheduler, it tells me "access denied"; when I try to
log in using the Netware login utility, it says:,

"(shell) E:\LOGIN>login
LOGIN-4.13-905: This utility was unable to initialize the country
information".

(b) The free space shown on the network in DOS is always "0" and one
out of every 5 times I try to look at directories in WordPerfect DOS,
it shows me there is nothing there or only one out of hundreds of
directories. If I play with it for a while the directories show back
up again eventually - for no reason I can identify.

[c] I can't load any DOS volumes beyond k:, even though I am using
exactly the same procedure, as far as I can tell, to do so. I need,
for example the "w:" directory. I do not presently have a "lastdrive"
command, which did not seem to affect anything one way or the other.

I mount the volume with "ncpmount -S [the Novell volume] /mnt/e: -U
ftp -n"

The first time I give the command, the system responds:
"ncpmount: No primary IPX interface found when trying to find [the
Novell volume]". The second time I use the command, it does not give
a response, and the volume appears to be loaded. Within my config.sys
in the hdimage, I have the following, where "d:", which is my local
actual /dev/hda3, is used as a place-holder to create the drive
letters I really don't need on the network::

device=c:\emufs.sys /mnt/d:          [becomes d:]]
device=c:\emufs.sys /mnt/e:/sys      [becomes e:]]
device=c:\emufs.sys /mnt/f:          [becomes f:]]
device=c:\emufs.sys /mnt/d:          [becomes g:]]
device=c:\emufs.sys /mnt/h:          [becomes h:]]
device=c:\emufs.sys /mnt/e:/sys      [becomes i:]]
device=c:\emufs.sys /mnt/d:          [becomes j:]]
device=c:\emufs.sys /mnt/k:          [becomes k:]]

In /mnt/, f:, h: and k: are defined as links to the appropriate
subdirectory of e:/sys/, so that the above works in DOSEmu config.sys.

(1) Is there anything I can do working with ncpfs so that I can log on
to the network as a regular user and be recognized as such??

(2) Is the only way to be on the Novell 4.11 network as a full user to
use the Caldera package? I am concerned about doing that not only
because of the size, but because Caldera licensed that from Novell,
and the Novell client for MS Windows messes up an application I really
want to use, DPMouse for DataPerfect..

(3) Why can't I have drives above k:? Does someone know how to use
lredir with a Novell volume? (I have done that with local drives on
other machines, naming up to drive "v:" for DOSEmu purposes, tying
that in with the fstab).

(3) Does anyone have suggestions about other things I could try??

I have no choice about staying on the Novell network or staying in DOS
for large portions of my work for at least the next year. I can't
migrate to wider use of Linux unless I can get get some work done in
Linux where I am right now..

Can you see the docs on the same machine, using the localhost name or 127.0.0.0
? Is there a proxy around ? Maybe you must switch it off. Can you ping the
machine ?

Yes, this is pretty easy to do, especially if you're just serving
yourself and perhaps a few others (i.e., don't need a lot of
administrative features to manage the PPP setup on a _bunch_ of lines).

You can use MGETTY's AutoPPP feature to detect incoming PPP calls (ones
that use PAP authentication). MGETTY will then start up PPPD on the line
for you. Just use RFC1918 address space for your dialup(s) and set up
masqueraded forwarding for those addresses. You might also want to
replace your IDENTD with one that handles masquerading, if you haven't
already.

Subject: NIS with HP-UX problem
Date: Fri, 26 Mar 1999 19:14:41 GMT

I'm having a problem with some HP-UX machines on our network, and the problem
seems to be related to linux NIS slave servers. The master server is running
Solaris 2.3, and when slave servers running RedHat 5.2, yp-tools 2.1.1,
ypbind 3.3.9, ypserv 1.3.5.1, are added some of the HP machines hang
intermitently. The HP's hang on NIS logins (local accounts are OK) at the
last line of the local .profile file (the last script in the login process),
and continue to hang until I hit ctrl-C. At the command line if I try to run
a bourne/korn shell the shell hangs until ctrl-C. C shell appears to work
properly. The home directories of the NIS users are remotely mounted, but
the .sh_history permissions do not seem to be the problem (known problem).
The problem does not go away until the machine is rebooted or the NIS slave
server is unplugged. Solaris, AIX, Digital unix, and linux machines do not
have problems. Has anyone else encountered this problem, and/or know of a
solution?

Don't get too hasty! Many systems do in fact need these daemons. I had a
problem with my link coming up too often and it was related to netbios
naming
services originating from the Win boxes. I added a few lines to my rc.local

I have a puzzling problem with a Linux (Redhat 5.2) firewall machine and ip
forwarding. I plan to use ipchains. Here's what I have going:

Machine is a dual P-100 with 96mb RAM, buslogic scsi controller, seagate
scsi drive. I have kernel 2.2.3 compiled and installed with all of the
firewall modules installed. The two NIC cards are 3com 3c905 and 3c900.

eth0 is working on the public address space and ping the whole internet, it
works fine.

eth1 is working on the private space (192.168.1.1). The two machines on the
private network can ping each other as well as the firewall machine - they
are all seeing each other fine.

I have IP forwarding turned on in the config file (see below), I even did
echo "1" > /proc/sys ... etc.

I think the problem is this.. on bootup, it give the message

Enabling IPv4 packet forwarding (pause)
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable

When I stop and start /etc/rc.d/init.d/network I get the same message. So
it seems as though my cards are not accessible for some reason during the
startup of network. But if that's the case, why can I ping away to my
heart's content?

Here's my configs (names changed):

/etc/sysconfig/network
NETWORKING=yes
FORWARD_IPV4=yes
HOSTNAME=hostname
DOMAINNAME=domain.com
GATEWAY=xxx.yyy.zzz.1 (public network router)
GATEWAYDEV=eth0

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
DEVICE=eth0
IPADDR=xxx.yyy.zzz.23
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=xxx.yyy.zzz.0
BROADCAST=xxx.yyy.zzz.255
ONBOOT=yes

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1
DEVICE=eth1
IPADDR=192.168.1.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.1.0
BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
GATEWAY=xxx.yyy.zzz.23
ONBOOT=yes

I have done over the fw-howto, masq-mini-howto, ipchains-howto again and
again, but I can't figure this one out. Can anyone help?

edit /etc/modules.conf (or /etc/conf.modules -- don't start that thread here

this is usually a hardware conflict issue. do this: 'setserial -a /dev/modem'
see if it reports the same settings as you have listed above.

when I select it, nothing appears on the right side (I guess there's
supposed to be a name). Is this a problem with the Mac or the Linux server?
If it's the Linux server, do I need to modify the papd.conf, the
AppleVolumes.default, or the AppleVolumes.system files? papd is running.
BTW, I'm running RedHat 5.2 and the latest netatalk from the contrib
directory from RH ftp.

I have Samba running and can print from Windows and I can print directly
from the server, so I know its not the printer...

Thanks,

Well, at my last job, we named our hosts with a sorta casual musical theme ---
band names, performer names, composer names, and so on.

One person named their machine "yes". Nothing broke:-).

I really like this idea, and think I'll be using Unix commands for hostnames
whenever I get to pick 'em. There's a preposterously long list convenient to

win!

P.S. The bands approach worked pretty well, but the guy who ended up with a

Yes. Compile smbfs support into your kernel, and install the smbmount utility.
Use smbmount to mount your shares to your Linux filesystem.

On our 'experimental' linux server, I've got a mountpoint called
/home/srdscs/srdscs00/c which has a permenant mount of our \\SRDSCS00\DRIVEC

The command looks like...
/usr/bin/smbmount /srdscs00/drivec /home/srdscs/srdscs00/c -I 192.168.111.1 -P password

I have a strange networking problem.

I was running Linux 2.2.1 (3.07 card services) on a Digital Laptop and
was using the Roamabout Wireless networking adapter with no problems.
Stupid me, I reinstalled RH 5.2 with 2.0.34 and recompiled the source
with the 3.05 card services. With a nice new 2.034 kernel, the
Roamabout adapter was working fine (I'm using iwconfig to set the NWID).

I then got 2.2.1 source with 3.09 card services and built a new 2.2.1
kernel w/those card services. After rebooting with the new kernel
image, Linux loads the module fine, I am receiving traffic from my
access point (via netstat and tcpdump information) and iwconfig is
happy. However I can't ping or do a thing with this guy.

Someone else I work with is running 2.2.1 (3.09 cs) and has no problems
with his Roamabout adapter. He even built me a kernel to boot off of
and that didn't fix my problem. It is really strange that I can see all
the bridge traffic, I'm in the right NWID but I can't access
anything. His laptop is a Ultra2000 while mine is a HiNote VP.

Any ideas?

You need to go over the wu-ftpd documentation, it's pretty clear on setting
up groups and setting permissions. It's confusing at first but there are
lots of sites to help you out.

ssh will solve your problems. See http://www.datafellows.com

Hmm,

I didn't edit the chat-script or the log messages. They are like that..
In the chat script, that's all I got...the '....' at the last line is
the username and the password. I receive a sample of a working chat
script and log messages the other day and I notice the different.

Anyway, now I dial through minicom, and the server answered. I got
connected. Th problem is I cannot use applications like Netscape or
telnet. It seems like the connection isn't availableto the others. I can
move around the server, but not other application in my pc.

When I did 'ifconfig', only the lo appears, not the ppp0. So I figure
out there must be something about route which is not correct. Does
anybody have suggestion what should I do next. I will try something, but
any help is really appreciated. Thanks.
