Subject: RH-5.2 PPP problem
Date: Fri, 26 Mar 1999 21:49:37 GMT
I have some strange to me problems when I use the dial-up conection.
while i was connected I run ifconfig and here are some details:
Io
inet addr: 127.0.0.1 Bcast: 127.255.255.255 Mask 255.0.0.0
etc..
ppp0
inet addr: 195.119.124.93 PtP:194.41.78.194. Mask: 235.255.255.0
UP POINTTOPOINT RUNNING MTU:1524 METRIC:1
Rx packets 10 error 0 etc..
Tx packets 10 errors 0 etc..
collisions 0
Mem...
I can ping servers on the internet sucessfully
When I'm trying with netscape it seems that the servers has been found but
its waiting an eternity for response ..
I have seen on the kde kppp details window the rate 1kb/s ??..
Before installing RH-5.2 I was using for a while the RH-5.1 and I had no
problems with the ppp (even without assining DNS servers nor gateway to the
script...)
Any ideas??
Geo.

When trying to run NETCFG I get the following error
TclError: no display name and no $display environment variable
This also happens when I try to run ethercfg. This is a standalone
fresh install on a machine that I want to get up on the network. The
NIC cards are in the box but not configured yet. I am running Redhat
5.2.
I have tried the following with no luck:
export DISPLAY=:0.0
export DISPLAY=:0
These were mentioned in some other posts I found as possible
solutions.

Subject: Problems disconnecting PPP!?
Date: Fri, 26 Mar 1999 17:20:39 -0500
I've got a semi-major problem.. I have my PPP connection set up with RH
5.2's linuxconf (had this prob with both kernel 2.0.6 and 2.2.4) and set
up to reconnect on disconnection. I can do an 'ifup ppp0' and it will
connect fine, but when I try to disconnect using any number of
possiblities, it doesn't work.. I've tried 'ifdown ppp0', 'usernetctl
ppp0 down', usernet, and linuxconf's built-in disconnect, and none of
them seem to disconnect by itself. the only thing they seem to
accomplish is to turn off auto-redial when I end up killing the pppd
process (it's the only way I can get my modem to physically
disconnect..) Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Help with PPP/MSCHAP80/WINNT connection!
Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble with pppd connecting to a Windows NT 4.0 RAS
server. Here are the details:
My machine: Red Hat 5.1 with pppd 2.3.4
Other machine: Windows NT 4.0 SP3, RAS set up with password (clear text)
authentication only.
PPP Options file:
lock
crtscts
defaultroute
noipdefault
noauth
chap-secrets file:
myusername * mypassword
(if I put a * after the password, for the IP address, things hand in
between the log file shown below).
Chat script:
AT OK ATDT<number> CONNECT '\d\c'
Here's what happens:
The modem dials out okay, connects to the NT machine, and it seems the
authorization is also
okay. The remote NT machine sends back an IP address for my machine to
use, but at that
point it seems pppd does not accept this address for some reason. There
are some CCP ConfReq
lines in the log that I do not understand:
PPP log:

I'll cast my vote with the fellow who spoke about Linksys...check there web
site for specifics about
the different models...I'd suggest going with one that uses the ne2000 PCI
driver as the Tulip
driver based cards seem very version specific for many cards (IMHO).

Betcha if you check innd is running. Take it out if your

Did you upgrade net-tools and DHCP? Not just recompile. DHCP problems
are the biggest reason I'm not upgrading right now. (well that and

Um.... That is a VERY old version.
The current version is 2.0b1pl18
There have been MANY fixes and improvements in just the last 5 patchlevels, let
alone the major version.....
3.0alpha is also already out.

Your going about it from the wrong angle. You're not going to be able
to specify the forward with the interface instead of the IP
address. The routing table doesn't work that way. What would happen if
you had DHCP run a script every time the IP address changes? I don't
know which dhcp you're using, but most of them allow this. You'll have
a short dead period while the address changes, but if you loose your
IP lease you'll loose all active connections anyway. It's not too
likely. The dhcp I use starts with the command "/usr/sbin/dhcpcd -c
/usr/bin/mlupd.dhcp eth1" and the mlupd.dhcp has this in it
#!/bin/sh
#what's my ip address
ipaddr=`grep IPADDR /etc/dhcpc/hostinfo-eth1 | colrm 1 7`
#establish incoming fowarding rules
/usr/sbin/ipportfw -C
/usr/sbin/ipportfw -A -t $ipaddr/80 -R 192.168.1.5/80
/usr/sbin/ipportfw -A -t $ipaddr/25 -R 192.168.1.2/25
/usr/sbin/ipportfw -A -t $ipaddr/23 -R 192.168.1.2/23

You are right. sorry it was just a typo. But I still think doing it to
.etc/passwrd wouldn't fry your logins.

Subject: pine and tin setup
Date: Fri, 26 Mar 1999 22:54:13 GMT
Hi, I recently succeeded in setting up a connection with my ISP using
Slackware 3.4 on a stand-alone 486 PC with 8Mb memory. And now I want to use
pine and tin but I run into trouble: 1. I have set up pine to use my ISP
login name and domain. I can now send messages but they contain a wrong
sender-address, namely my local login name plus my ISP's domain. And this is
obviously wrong. I cannot use the trick to create a local user with the same
name as my ISP login name because the latter name contains a dot and this is
not accepted by my local Linux. What to do? 2. How can I read news using
either pine or tin? If possible so that I can read and post off-line and
synchronize when I want. I have tried some things but I don't see any
messages in any group.
Should I perhaps try alternative news and mail readers? I prefer to work in
text-mode (X is uncomfortable with 8 Mb anyway).
Regards, Michiel

I don't know anything about running sendmail like this. You might
check to see if a sendmail is not already running.
You might take a look at http://www.sendmail.org and see what you
can find there. I thought there were some compile time options
or command line options that had to be specified to run sendmail
like this.
I know there is also a sendmail newsgroup. You might be better off
posting there.
