Subject: Setup 2nd NIC 3c509

Hi,

I wish to add a 2nd NIC 3c509 as eth1 to my Linux box which is using a
3c905b as eth0 to connect with another PC. 3c509 is not pnp, so needless
to disable it and I check the io address and irq by the 3com utility.

After I did the following steps,...
1. edit /etc/lilo.conf, added...
  append="ether=0,0,eth1"
2. edit /etc/conf.modules
  alias eth0 3c59x
  options eth0 full_duplex=1 options=20
  alias eth1 3c509
  options io=0x300 irq=10

There is no any message about 3c509 on boot up messages, and so I
couldn't make any ifconfig for eth1. What do I miss to do?

Thanks a lot
Mark

help people please. I am trying to set up my linux Pc to be a gateway
server. Eth0 is on 208.233.115.231 and Eth1 is on 192.168.0.x and everything
else is set right, but every time I boot eth0 comes up as being disabled.
why? and if i set up RedHat linux 5.2 to be a server machinje, do I still
need to compile ipmasq and TCP/IP into the kernel?
I'm new at this. sorry if I sound clueless. thanks.

Subject: smbclient / smbmount again: Win95 works, NT doesn't !???
Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 20:05:30 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I gained some more experience and can describe my problem clearer now. I have a
linux box with SuSE 6.0, kernel 2.2.5, Samba 2.03 in a mixed NT / Win95 network.
The linux box works ok, http, telnet, ftp, and is visible from the Windows
world. The services provided by Samba work too. Just I can't see any NT shares
from the linux side ! When I do smbclient -L localhost, I see my workgroup, but
just the Win95 boxes in it. My NT workstation I cannot see. Encrypted password
is enabled.
Now I use the tool LinNeighborhood (very nice) to get a GUI view. It shows the
same, but also allows me to open the NT domain tree. There I can find my NT box,
but without any shares !
Any hints are welcome !

Regards, Eggert

Thanks for the reply Stu

I didn't mean to give the impression
that anything was set up correctly,
that is where I,m trying to get to though.

Here is my inittab entry

 # Start a getty on the modem line
         S1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty ttyS1 DT19200

here are messages from messages log

mgetty(400): init chat failed, exiting...: Interrupted system call
mgetty)400): failed in mg_init_data, dev=ttyS1, pid=400

Thanks for helping

Well, you don't need to disable the PnP in MB BIOS. But you have to disable the
PnP on 3c905b by configure program from 3com running on Windowns95 / DOS.

I wish to add 2nd NIC 3c509 to my Linux box which is using 3c905b.
Step1. edit /etc/lilo.conf, added...
  append="ether=0,0,eth1"
Step2. edit /etc/conf.modules, so it is...
  alias eth0 3c59x
  options eth0 full_duplex=1 options=20
  alias eth1 3c509
  options io=0x300 irq=10

There is still no any message about 3c509 on bootup messages.
What file do I miss to edit?
Thanks

I am having a problem with a kernel I just compiled. Not sure what I changed
to make this happen, but...

I not get insmod errors about not being able to find net-pf-4 and net-pf-5.
At the same time, one of my 2 3COM cards, the one that gets its IP address
from DHCP can't anymore. These are likely related I assume, but am lost on
how to fix it. I have networking stuff compiled into the kernel, not
loadable modules. The only loadable modules that I am using are for floppy
disk, parallel port, and DOS file systems. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You don't need special mailservers, it's all handled by the clients.

Hi there,

Im having trouble setting up a parallel link between my normal PC and
my laptop. Both machines are running RedHat 5.2 and kernel 2.2.4. Ive
compiled PLIP, Parport and Parport_pc as modules and configured the
plip0 interface through linuxconf. However, when I try to load the
"plip.o" module it comes back with " Device or resource busy". Ive also
made sure that my parallel port is on the right IO (0x378) and Irq (7).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx in advance,

Erik

Well when it comes to HD volumes and NOT printers this program might
help you a lot.
http://www.bnro.de/~schmidjo/
But remember that if you use one of the latest samba (2.0.*) then you
have to make your own binaries which include smbmount/smbumount/smbmnt
to make Linneighborhood to work.
This can be done easily reading the documentation that comes with the
tar.gz package. It's a simple script which you have to alter a bit so
that it creates a rpm for you with these tools included.

You can turn off the requests for these modules in the /etc/conf.modules
file. the net-pf-5 I "think" is apple talk.
add this line in that file.

# /etc/conf.modules
alias net-pf-4 off
alias net-pf-5 off

Not sure how your machine is configured but this will get these out of the
way to debug your ethernet problem.
Are you seeing error msgs on boot up for your cards i.e. /var/log/dmsg
or /var/log/messages
the conf.modules can kick start your cards.

# example conf.modules
alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x300 # 0x <your setting>

You need versions of the clients that support utilizing your proxy server.
Similar to 'sockified' versions for a socks proxy server. I know versions
exists for socks. I don't know of any for other proxy servers. I can't
imagine
they are much different. You might try taking a look at the socks versions
and see if they can be made to work. www.socks.nec.com

I have a 3c590B-TX (Cyclone) and mine works just fine (see log below).
I'm using RedHat v5.2 with kernel v2.2.5-ac1 on a GA-6BXDS (Dual PII350)

Yes, works very well. You run pppd (the PPP daemon) on the serial port instead
of a having a getty on the port. Is explained in the HOWTO documents available
from http://www.linux.org under support. If you want examples, mail me.
