First please excuse me if this has recently been covered BUT...

I have a Redhat 5.2 / 2.2.3 box running Samba. Works very nicely talking
to our W95 machines, no need to manually enter passwords to access
shares etc. When I try to talk to the thing from W98 I get a "Please
enter password" prompt as soon as I double click the Samba box icon in
"Network Neighbourhood". Then it tells me the password is incorrect - no
matter what I enter.

I presume it's something really basic.. If I don't fix it soon I'll
bring my nice shiny Glock home and "fix" windows 98 properly !

Any guides would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Ingmar

P.S. Our network is home based. P100 (mine - W98), 2 x DX4/100 (kids -
W95), 1 x dx4/100 linux box.

Hi!

Here's another one of those questions... Sorry for the trivality, but
I am inexperienced with this kind of thing...

I have found about 20 of those entries in my xconsole for today:

Apr 11 01:44:23 main tcplogd: auth connection attempt from marvin.cdf.toronto.edu
[128.100.31.3]
Apr 11 01:45:30 main tcplogd: auth connection attempt from marvin.cdf.toronto.edu
[128.100.31.3]

cdf.toronto.edu is the computer-science facility at my university. Is
some 'friendly' fellow student trying to log into my machine? :)

Then, earlier in the same session (just before one of the messages
listed above):

Apr 11 00:14:08 main tcplogd: auth connection attempt from bureau7.utcc.utoronto.ca
[128.100.132.17]

Am I being too paranoid?

Thanks,

You shouldn't warm-reboot to Linux. Things work better if you do a
cold-reboot.

I am having a problem writing files to a Linux system [running RH5.2, with
Samba, and the drive configured as a writable one under smb.conf (as far as
I know, I have followed examples) ] from a Win95 machine. I can see my
Linux machine fine, and copy files from it, but I am not able to copy files
over to it. I am curious if the partition has to be a NFS partition, or if
the standard ext2 will work. Could directory permissions have anything to
do with it, and if so, what should they be set at? The Linux machine also
has Win95 on it, and I can send files to it that way, but I would rather
not. If anyone has any experience with Samba and file sharing stuff, please
email me or post to this group.

Date: Thu, 08 Apr 1999 04:06:59 -0900

After having installed Linux relatively painlessly, I went forth to
configure PPP. I ran into a bit of trouble with that, however I was able
to procure help from both the web and the usenet that alleviated my
problems. Now, after having gotten PPP up and running, I went forth to
actually do something neat, like setting up a web server.

And thus I have reached another impasse.

The httpd.conf file of Apache. The instructions seem so simple, so
uncomplicated, yet I fear I am having no luck in getting my Apache server
to work: none of the configurations I have tried have allowd me to connect
to my IP address or my DNS name via a web browser (yes, the daemon was
running).

I can connect to http://localhost/ without a single hitch, and thus Apache
was installed correctly.

I do not have a registered domain name, and I have a dynamic IP address,
however I am not particularly concerned about that at this moment. There
are work arounds for the dynamic IP address.

I have scoured both the internet and usenet to no avail; this seems like
one of those things that is so pathetically easy, nobody even bothers to
discuss it.

Help? Can someone simply point out the fields in httpd.conf that need to
be altered and what they need to be altered to?

Man, I had my quid-pro-quo macintosh server up and running inside five minutes.

Hi!

I need to run both apache-1.3.3 and apache-ssl-1.2.6 in a same machine.
Unfortunately the rpm from both packages will install the mod* files in
/usr/lib/apache, erasing each other. And their mod* files is not
compatible to each other.

I use RedHat Linux 5.1.

Is there any way to do this? Thanks.

Its not nice to use two jumperless ISA NICS..since the ISA bus is so

Unless the format for POP3 has changed somewhat, I can't help but think

Well, I am really unsure what the problem is now. After reconfiguring my
printer, I got it to accept the print queue and it acts like it is going to
work. However, when it begins to print, it just feeds paper and never
actually prints anything. So, when I try to print something, it just spits
blank paper out. It worked before, and only stopped after I changed my
modem. That is why I made that connection. If anyone has come across this
problem and found a solution I would greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks
