Put the following lines into conf.modules (or modules.conf):
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate

Subject: Linux and Roadrunner
Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 13:48:25 GMT
Hi,
I have recently installed RedHat Linux ver 5.2 with the 2.0.36 kernel and
rrlogind ver 2.2 from http://www.vortech.net/rrlinux/rrlogind.htm to connect
via cable modem to my ISP. I used tas5-nf0.midsouth.rr.com (172.16.0.169)
as the login/authentication/dns server.
My original intent was to use the Linux box, configured with IP Masquerading
as a gateway for my other machine (running Windows 98) After boot, it
appears that I'm logged into roadrunner; ifconfig on my Ethernet card
indicates that dhcp has picked up an IP address, but it seems that all I can
do is ping other hosts. I've tried both IP addresses and FQDN's, so it
appears that name resolution is working too. I can't, however, seem to get
FTP, Telnet or web browsing to work; they just time out.
I've looked at my configurations a hundred times, and even re-installed
once. I also tried to disable my second Ethernet card and all of the IP
Masquerading components in order to get just the cable modem working, in
hopes that something in the IP Masquerading setup was the culprit, but I get
the same behavior. I think I'm probably missing something fairly obvious,
just can't see it. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Bob Welzel
I have also checked the vortech web site and it notes: "Most of the
information contained in the RRLinux site also pertains to other areas that
use the Kerberized login client from NetManage." I don't know haw to verify
if roadrunner in Memphis uses the 'kerberized login client," or if that
could be the source of the problem. I initially tried Phil Karn's login
program, but haven't tried that again in quite a while.

Anybody knows if this network card is supported by Linux?
I want to connect my new P-2 PCI system with my old '486 ISA-bus PC
and when I bought a Netgear FA 310TX NIC for my new PC (which I know
is supported by Linux), I thought getting its ISA version for the '486
PC would be just perfect. Especially because I saw no indication on the
box that it was a PnP NIC. However, after I opened the box at home,
it showed no jumpers at all and the docs indicate it is a PnP card.
For non-PnP Windows 95 systems they provide a setup program to set
IRQ, port adress and such with software. But that may not help me
much in Linux.
So before I even try to install it, I thought I better ask it here if
anybody had any success with this Netgear EA201c NIC.
Thanks,
Joe

Hi, first of all if this is in the wrong NG my appologies, however, we the
Lincolnshire Linux User Group (LLUG)
are just setting up and looking for new members.
There will be NO fee's involved,
we intend to have meetings at a central point where Linux Users can get
together and help each other with all aspects of Linux, it does not matter
if you are a newbie or a guru, nor does it matter if you are using
Redhat, SuSE, Debian, Slackware or any other version of linux, so long as
you either use linux or want to then this is a club that is worth while
joining.
If you are interested then in the first instance reply to the author of this
message, with your name email address, ICQ number or any other contact
details
so we can send you futher details of dates/times and locations of the
meetings.
Please do not reply to this newsgroup!

I'm surprised; as a comp.protocols group they should not deal in setup
questions as a general rule. Debugging, maybe, if it's an "interesting"
question -- but for setup, this would be a more appropriate group. IMHO.

My condition for helping you would be that you stop doing business with
SPAMazon.... Oh, well.
First, in /etc/resolv.conf, try changing "domain" to "search".
You say NT works -- does your NT script also look for "sername" "assword" or
does RAS connect as though by magic? If the latter, you might want to
investigate using pap-secrets and having pppd do its own dialing. Gory
details at http://www.brasscannon.com/Linux/
My /etc/ppp/options file -- "noauth" because you will not have good luck
forcing your ISP to authenticate itself to your Linux box, and the
"ipcp-accept" lines are important unless you have a static IP address.
demand
idle 480
ipcp-accept-remote
ipcp-accept-local
lock
noauth
defaultroute
user mypapsecretsid
remotename mypapsecretsispname
ttyS3 115200 crtscts
connect "/etc/ppp/ip-dial"
My /etc/sysconfig/network:
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=howie
DOMAINNAME=brasscannon.com
FORWARD_IPV4=yes
Try pinging your local ISP rather than a remote site. (Use NT to confirm that
the site you're pinging is willing to answer pings!) Also try something that
uses TCP packets rather than UDP packets -- telnet, for example.
Good luck, and please don't bother the folks over in comp.protocols.* until
you've given comp.os.linux.networking a fair chance to help you first.

Subject: Home Network Setup ???
Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 17:26:42 +0000
Hi All,
I'm setting up a home network. I'm running Redhat 5.1 Linux 2.0.35. I
will have two machines, one as Redhat 5.1 and Samba server, and the
other is dual boot Windooze 95, Redhat 5.1. Netgear NIC's
I'm a little confused about the naming on the dual boot Linux box. I
setup the Win95 side of it but I'm not sure of the netcfg dialog under
linux.
Example naming scheme:
server server.linux.com 192.168.100.1
linuxbox linuxbox.linux.com 192.168.100.2
win95box win95box.linux.com 192.168.100.3
subnet-255.255.255.0
On the dualboot/Linux box in "netcfg" under Names dialog I see HOST and
DOMAIN, should I put the HOST name of the server "server" and the DOMAIN
"server.linux.com" in there?
Under HOST dialog box I have IP,NAME,NICKNAME. Currently I have
IP-127.0.0.1, Name-localhost Nickname-local
I know I need to leave the 127.0.0.1, but should I "re-name it"
Name-linuxbox.linux.com Nickname-linuxbox,
Then add a new entry IP-192.168.100.2 Name-linuxbox.linux.com
Nickname-linuxbox
I've read many help Doc's, they all seem to talk around how to actually
plug info into these dialogs.
Another small concern:
The win95/linuxbox is the machine that has the Modem, would it be
possible to dial through the Linux/Samba from Windooze95, if I moved the
modem over to the server. IP-Masquerade will allow me to do that with
linuxbox through the server, not sure about Win95 side of it. Would you
want you server machine making the internet connection??? Or, should I
just leave the damn modem where it is.
Thank You For All Your Help.

Question, does the ipmasq_ftp module support ftp through special port?
If not, what can I do?

Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 01:42:45 +0800
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone has successfully attempted to install Linux on the
Compaq Armada 6500.
I have installed RedHat 5.2 2.0.36 and KDE with XiG display drivers.. but am
unable to get the internal network card to work.
PCMCIA drivers are installed and apparently working as I can get a PCMCIA
SCSI card to function. The Armada comes with an internal 55.6K modem and
10/100Mb ethernet card as standard. To my understanding these devices are
integrated into a Xircom RealPort combo modem/ethernet card. Although this
card is not removable as it is integrated somehow into the back of the unit.
There are two type II PCMCIA slots free on the unit as well.
I have read the PCMCIA docs on setting up this device under Linux.. but
nothing is detected by cardmgr or the pcmcia drivers.
Can anyone help? Many thanks appreciated!

This is not a workaround. When the base module for the NIC interface is
loaded (8390.o) it will try and load any protocals that will use it's
support. (module dependencies) What you are doing is telling the module/
insmod that the additional protocals are not necessary.

Yes there is an RPM, see link on www.qmail.org.
However, the RPM still does require a compile of the source. At least the
one I used.
The directions are reasonably straight forward.

The card probably has a software program that comes with it to change
the interrupt. Usually a flash rom is able to retain the change when the
power is shut off. Post the name of the card and someone might be able to help.
Alternately, go the supplier's web site and they might have more information.
