Hi there,
I got some junk mails. Those junk mails have some new breed domain
name that I have never seen before. This is weird. Can anyone tell me what
this is? Do you know how they can implement it? This works with IE 4.01. It
does not work if you ping the name. This must be a new trick.

I am wanting to connect a serial cable from a Linux machine (Red Hat) to
the console port on some access servers (Cisco, Livingston, Microcom). I
need to be able to give the Microcom maintenance program an IP address and a
port to connect to. Connecting the cable is obviously easy but how do I
assign an IP address or port?

Save yourself a lot of grief from installing ppp-2.3.5 which has nasty
install problems. Get ppp-2.3.7 from
cs.anu.edu.au/pub/software/ppp/
The kernel compile problems should go away once it's installed *and* you'll
get an improved ppp. Be sure to follow the ppp installation instructions
as you did below.

You'll see that the first and last Viagra sites are the same.
The %31 is just hex ASCII code for the digit "1", etc.

Whoa, Dude,
I was having similar problems. Data was transferred to the Linux box at ~200
kbyte/sec, but it received at only 6 kbyte/sec. What I did was experimented with
different MTU settings with ifconfig. If I set MTU to 500, the problem
disappeared. It turns out, I had set MTU on the Windows machine to 576 to optimize
its PPP connection. This must be a global setting for all interfaces on windows
because when I went back to the default MTU, I was able to run Linux at MTU of
1500.
Give it a shot.

Use the config tools called SWAT.
Enter your ip adress in a browser and port 901.
IP.ADDRESS.FOR.COMPUTER:901
And log in as root.
There you have a great config tool with lots of explanations.
Then you can use LinNeighborhood when you browse your shares.
It's almost the same as Network Neighborhood in win9x/NT.

What is the result of netstat -rn? -> Do you have a route to your local
network? Do you have a
route to the default gateway?
Can you ping anything on the other side of the default gateway? -> Maybe
forwarding isn't on,
on the gateway. Maybe it is a proxy server instead of a router or NAT.

ok heres the deal ive got redhat 5.1
and somehow ive messed up my ip address on eth0
inet show 192.168.10.1 broadcast shows 207.164.111.255 ??
how did I do this.
also whe I run route it has
207.164.111.0
192.168.10.0 (twice)
127.0.0.0
I downed eth0 and re-uped it now all it has it
192.168.10.0
127.0.0.0
if I try to add a route or the broadcast in ifconfig they both say
host name look up failure.?
the command I was using to change the broadcast is.
ifconfig [-]broadcast [192.168.10.255] eth0
what am i doing wrong??

i have a big problem over days of testing, reading ...
I have set up my box with redhat 5.2 and one ne2000 nic. Now i have
installed two other nics. The machine should act as a gateway for three
subnetworks. Cause of having not much hdd space my question is if it�s
possible to set up the two new nics without building a new kernel? In
SuSE-Linux it�s fine with YaST! Is there a way in RedHat too?

Yes. It means [that group with execute permission turned off] will no
longer be able to CD into that directory. IIRC. You should still be
able to do an "ls" from another directory. I may have that mixed around
with the "read" permission.

I am an old nerd living my last years and to while away time I have
taken to computers and surfing the Internet! I managed to teach myself
something about IT and managed not only to use Windows and other
Programs but also run and manage my own Web Sites. Lately I have grown
sick of looking at Microsoft Windows and decided to teach myself
Linux. I hope to be able to use it to replace MS Windows and run my
faviurite Programs (or their equivalents) with Linux.
I managed to get hold of two Linux CDs - one that came with Slackware
books and the other The Red Hat. I have no problem setting either of
them except that with Slackware's version my mouse and keys jamed
whenever I run Linux X-Windows. Had checked with their configuraions
but still could not unfreeze my mouse and keys. Wonder what are the
problems?
Also in my part of the World one must use proxy servers to login to
Internet through our ISPs. Unfortunately the Netscape that was
included in the SlackWare's Linux and the Red Hat could not
work as there is no provision to configure the Program.
Could some wise Solomons out there or godd Samaritan please help this
old nerd resolve the problems mentioned above. Would also appreciate
if anyone could please recommend either a better nd more user friendly
version of Linux and the URLs where I can download Programs to help
me configure my Linux to function as a Dial-up Workstation and not as
a Server, I am not a Programmer and do not understand Linux well.

If you have a static IP address, then you can list your box as both
primary and secondary DNS when you register with Internic.
Alternatively, you can look at this free public DNS service:
http://soa.granitecanyon.com
They are very heavily used and I find that their service is mediocre.
Or you can check out http://www.nols.com a really cheap dynamic dns
outfit that will surely be happy to do static dns for you.

So I considere that both of my NIC are probed.
I have another station with the IP 192.168.1.2
But I can reach the second computer.

I've just updated to kernel 2.2.4 and this weird thing happends.
I boot, my ethernet card comes to life as smooth as it gets. But it makes
duplicate entries in the routing table? Why? Everything works fine, but this
thing bothers me.
This is how it looks:
$ route -n

The two first entries (starting with 192). Why? I just want one.
I brough the interface down (ifdown) and the two entries disappeared. I
brought it back up (ifup) and there they were again, two entries!
Why is this?

I could use some help.
I have set up Slackware Linux (3.0.6) successfully on an IBM PS/2
box with microchannel adapter. I installed the network applications and
configured the network including changing the eth0 to tr0.
No matter what I try, the error message tr0:open failed: ret_code = 30,
retrying
keeps poping up on the screen. I tried a different MCA token ring
adapter (these are all lanstreamers)..a different model and it couldn't
open the adapter...but didn't give the tr0:open failed error.
I would appreciate some help on this. I would use another type of
adapter, but it only has Microchannel and I only have two models of
tokenring adapter cards for microchannel.

You need the pppd option proxyarp, no defaultroute option, IP forwarding
compiled into the kernel (I don't run RH and can't say yea or nay), and
IP forwarding turned on: " echo 1 -n > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward ".
The IP for the call-in must be a part of the same subnet that the one
that the linux server is on.

Check /etc/syslog.conf for something that dumps everything that pppd

Check the IRQ configured for the modem's device file and compare it to
the IRQ that the modem actually uses.
