NEVER run full duplex except on a _switched_ network! NEVER! Full duplex
does not stop and listen before transmitting and is guaranteed to give you
collisions and FCS errors up the wazoo except on the most lightly loaded
network.

Collisions and FCS (frame) errors on a 10/100 BaseT network with very
little activity is a sure sign of a problem. Check that NONE of your cards
are set to full duplex.

With a properly configured 100 BaseT network using modern PCI cards with
Bus mastering you can realistically expect transfer rates up to 64 Mbps (8
MB/s) if there is little activity elsewhere. I have actually seen 95 Mbps
on switched netowrks but htis was under unusal circumstances.

Subject: Login to wrong user home directory
Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 09:59:49 GMT

I'm using Redhat 5.2a.
The problem is that when my server user is login to server, he meet the
message that "Can't find homedirectory, so login to root".

For example, when server user "bok"(home directory: /usr1/bok) login to server
with his full ID & Passwd
meet the message that Can't find user home directory "/usr1/bok!".
In this case why the "!" was attached at directory name?

Any solution?

I did a quick scan using snmpwalk and this router appears to be just plain
unreachable. Did you generate your cfg file using cfgmaker? I am curious
if you are sure this router can be reached using the public community.

Hi,
At kde.themes.org there's a cgi-script that's supposed to automagically
transform the *.cgi files (the downloadable themes) on the fly to
*.tar.gz when you click on the links. However, all I get is a lot of
garbage. I suppose I have to tell Netscape to download the files instead
of just showing them, but how do I do that ? I've even tried to
right-click the link and then "save as" *.tar.gz, which didnt work
because the file isnt a gzipped tar file. Im using Netscape 4.5.
Any ideas ?

question, I noticed that when I do ifconfig both eth0 & ppp0 show 0 for TX.
RX is fine however for TX errors & dropped keep going up. I haven't noticed
any problems accessing say the internet but I was wondering what would cause

1.) To get a GUI interface (preferably an RPM) that works in KDE on
RedHat 5.2 that will enable me to use my CD-R (Mitsumi 2801TE). I
already have it set up for SCSI correctly. X-cdroast is a piece of shit.

2.) Same as above but for a generic scanner, and please don't tell me to
go to mostang.com I have and installed SANE their documentation sux and
I need a step by step method for someone new to Linux (that seems very
hard to come by!).

3.) I set up my printer in the Red Hat installation without a hitch, it
seemed. I try to print, no dice!

4.) A good, free Office Suite for KDE in RPM format.

I know it sounds like a lot but until I am able to get these things
resolved I will be unable to delete Microsoft Win95. I really want Linux
to win but if things like this aren't addressed with a little more ease
IT NEVER WILL!! I am fed up with messing with zipped files and compiling
shit!

Am I screwed???

Subject: What exactly is the socket TIME_WAIT status in netstat?
Date: Wed, 14 Apr 1999 18:56:02 -0600

Why are my connections between my network services stuck in a TIME_WAIT
?

I have a network client that always communicates FROM a given local
port, but after the connection is closed, that port is TIME_WAITing.
netstat(8) says that ``The socket is waiting after close for remote
shutdown retransmission.''

What is that? Is that a pre-mature shutdown by my client (LOCAL), or an
improper shutdown by my server (REMOTE)? They both reside on the same
machine.

Any help as always greatly appreciated.

Fair enough.

You do need the 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa zone. Put it back in. It is
important.

You also should have a reverse lookup zone for the addresses in wec. You
can get away without one but you won't like the perfornamce.

You must have Set Bindery Context set up on the novell server because ncpmount
is a netware 3x client but....
i am using right know ncpfs 2.2.0-1 and it has Netware nds support for 4x
server and it works! but no docs.
If you use this, login will look like Login_name.org_unit.organisation (

There are number of huge problems with this "comparison." Many of the
setting used are well known to cause performance degradation. Some of the
obscure stuff Mindcraft did to cripple Linux was not well known to cause
problems but they are known problems. Of course, maybe they are just plain
incompotent. Hell, as far as I can see they didn't even know enough to
give Linux any swap space!

For a partial list of things done wrong., See:

correction: the test system had 1 gig of RAM in it. Both Linux and NT can
use up to 2 gigs. They screwed up Linux configuration though.

Subject: Networking causes my machine to freeze during bootup.

Hi.

I'm having a problem with networking on my RH5.1 machine.
Every time I tell my machine to start networking at boottime (either with
ntsysv or the runlevel editor), the machine freezes when it boots. It
gets as far as

INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
Disabling IPv4 packet forwarding
Sysctl: ip forwarding off

then it freezes, and the only thing I can do is reset. I do have
initscripts 3.67.1 (I tried installing a later version, but it complained
that it wouldn't work with RH5.1), and I also have net-pf-4 and net-pf-5
"off" in my /etc/conf.modules file.

My machine is running RH 5.1 with the 2.0.36-3 kernel (from the
rpm, not compiled at all), 32M of RAM, 3.2 and 1.6G HDs. I have it
connected to my ISP with PPP over a dynamic link for a few hours a day.
It's a standalone machine (no network attached), but I apparently need
networking running in order for fetchmail to work right.

I would appreciate any help with getting this fixed. I can post
any other info on my computer setup if necessary. Thanks in advance.
