Your version of ifconfig is misreading 2.2.3's network statistics.

You need to update your net-tools rpm to a newer version. ifconfig is part of
the net-tools package, and the version you have is out of date and can't read
the new version of the /proc interface in the 2.2.X kernels required to
correctly report the RX, TX, etc. statistics.

Subject: NFS is killing me ! rpc.mountd crashes on Linux 2.2.5 HELP !
Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 16:41:01 GMT

Hi people !

I am getting lost and frustrated, I have a Linux 2.2.5 setup here, and a huge
NFS problem:

Every time someone tries to mount my exported NFS volumes rpc.mountd crashes,
I get a messages entry saying what someone tried to acces me with NFS and
then it is over, rpc.mountd is not in ps -A anymore. If I try to mount my own
local volumes using my IP number it crashes as well ****BUT**** it stays
alive if I use localhost as my computer name while mounting.

If anyone could have an idea WHY is this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE save my poor
soul and give me a hint :)

I have reinstalled all packages, used knfs but no go, all the same.

Some OS info:

PC is a Dell Latitude CPi with 3COM 3C575B PCMCIA adapter, Kernel version is
2.2.5, with NFS filesystem support compiled in.

output of some commands which I think is important:

titicaca:/usr/src/linux # hostname -V
net-tools 1.51
hostname 1.98 (1998-02-27)

titicaca:/usr/src/linux # showmount -v
Universal NFS Server 2.2beta41

titicaca:/usr/src/linux #mount -t nfs localhost:/usr/local/nfsshare /mnt/net
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on
localhost:/usr/local/nfsshare, or too many mounted file systems

titicaca:/usr/src/linux # showmount
Hosts on titicaca:
localhost

titicaca:/usr/src/linux # ps -A | grep rpc
   81 ? 00:00:00 rpc.nfsd
   83 ? 00:00:00 rpc.ugidd
 3203 ? 00:00:00 rpc.mountd

I REALLY hope you could help me ! SOS

Do you have IPX or NetBEUI installed on the NT boxes ? If so,
and you're not using these protocols
then remove them.

There appears to be a nasty Windows bug where if a machine
becomes a master browser on one tranport it starts announcing
itself as master browser on the TCP transport also.

nmbd doesn't like this :-).

Hope this helps,

Try this "ipchains -A input -s 205.188.0.0/16 -j REJECT" stopped ICQ in it's

Apparently that class B is used to make a primary connection for searches.
Also we use a class B 192.168.0.0 here for the LAN you can change it to suit
your needs. ie. 24 class C 8 class A. Good luck..

This is not quite right. If you are using Apache with SSl in North

I can't ping my ISP using any machine name I can find by pinging a machine
with better manners, like llug.sep.bnl.gov pings back and gives me four or
five of my ISP's server names and they won't ping.

FYI.In the UK computer trade press this week (Computer Weekly,Network
News) there was an article based on a study by D H Brown Associates
from the USA,called Linux : How good is it ? Which compared Linux
against Unix and NT in an enterprise server test, which came to the
conclusion that Linux was good, but not good enough.

Results were
1.Conventional Unix - strongest
2.Conventional Unix - weakest
3.Windows NT Server 4/EE
4.Red Hat 5.2
5.Caldera OpenLinux 2.2

The conventional Unix's were IBM AIX 4.3.2,Compaq Tru64 Unix
4F,HewlettPackard HP-UX 11,Silicon Graphics Irix 6.5 and Sun Solaris
7.

I have no idea how they measured the tests, configured the servers or
who D H Brown are.

There's nothing exceptionally difficult about it. A simple set of rules
to accomplish this would be:

ipfwadm -F -f
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.1.0/24
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.2.0/24

where the masq box has three network connections: one to the outside, one
on the 192.168.1.0 network, and one on the 192.168.2.0 network.

Note that in this specific example you'd be better off using

ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.0.0/16

to cover both networks at once. But the point is that two separate
networks are being masqueraded, and this can be done by specifying ipfwadm
rules for each.

I've been using it at work for some time now on a Win95 machine with no
real problems. Just the occasional missing font message when I try to
run emacs :-). Didn't do anything special to install it, it just worked

Close. When in use, the exact same code is used. However, when
loaded as a module, it uses slightly more memory (the module has code
to unload itself that isn't there otherwise). Of course, there will
also be strange subtle cache effects due to the code being at a
different address.

Also, are modules compiled with -fPIC? If so, then expect them to run
perhaps 5% slower on x86 processors due to the loss of a register.
(Just like ELF shared libraries instead of a.out shared libraries.)

Reasons I sometimes modules:
 * Save memory for features not used all the time
 * Added flexibility (e.g., passing parameters to modules)
[Yes, you can do that with parameters for the kernel, but some of
us find it easier to do it with modules.]
 * Avoid need for bzImage kernel on systems that won't load them due to
hardware glitches (I seem to have one).
 * Add-on feature that is only available as a module (PCMCIA and LIRC).

It works before this message. It dosen't seem to be IRQ problem.
Run ifconfig, get something like:
TX packets: 1100 errors: 150 dropped:0 overrunds:87 carrier:0

I leave the machine idle overnight and theconnection broke. Message like:
eth0: transmit timed out: status 0090 command 0000.

There is a hourly cron job running for news (nntp) which is set
automatically
during install. Since there is no new server in my LAN, would it cause the
problem?

Also, it there is message "try restart transmitter ..." follow the "transmit
timed
out", the connection is still there. Any idea? Thanks.

I do not think you want a default route to your eth0 anyway, since I
suspect that you only have a finite number of machines you can get to on
eth0 (otherwise why would you connect via ppp to the net).
So, get rid of the default entry entirely -- eg put
route del default
at the end of your rc.local file (eg /etc/rc.d/rc.local on RedHat)
Then make sure that all of your machines on eth are listed with
explicit routes.

Sorry, why are you using nslookup on a finite sized ethernet ? You
(probably) have no nameserver anyway, and it cannot get out to the net
to get names anyway.

Perhaps you need to be more specific as to your network topology and why
you use ppp as well.

check the name and domain your x clients are trying to connect to an make
sure that name is in your hosts file. when you connect to the internet your
name resolution should be pointing to your internet providers DNS and your
systems not in there! you will need to find yourself in the local /etc/hosts
