The simple-minded way is to compile your own kernel with support for
your hardware built in.

while we're on the subject, I just got fed up with Solaris non-support for my
hardware and switched to Slackware 3.6 (the 2.0.36 kernel or something). I have a
kingston
KNE110T Ethernet card which uses the Tulip driver. I compiled it (v0.91) according
to the compile-command at the end of the file and installed the module in the
kernel. The
if I do an

ifconfig eth0

I can see the interface, but when I try to configure the interface
using

ifconfig eth0 <ip-address> netmask <netmask> broadcast <gateway-address>

I get an error like

SIO(some junk): try again.

Not very verbose. Is this an IRQ problem? Am I configuring the interface wrong?

any help is greatly appreciated!

Netscape itself can connect through proxy servers, and it has news and
mail reading functionality. See the menu Edit|Preferences. Under
there, in the Advanced section, is the Proxy configuration.

Also, if you _really_ like a program but it won't work through a SOCKS
proxy, you can get the NEC SOCKS package (www.socks.nec.com), compile
it, and use the runsocks program to turn your other program into a
SOCKS-compatible program:

        $ runsocks trn

Note that this doesn't work with HTTP proxies like Squid. Generally,
though, those can be bypassed through SOCKS or some other mechanism.

Good luck,

No, you can give the paramater to some modules as above, or you can load a
module multiple times by giving it different names with the -o option.

Hi Patrick,

The reason you are asked for your password to log in, is because NT uses
password encryption and you have encryption turned off in samba (the
default).

There is a HOWTO on encryption that you should read, but it is poorly
written.
Here are some tips:

1) create an "smbpasswd" file. It is documented in the HOWTO. Note that
the
procedure for creating the smbpasswd file in the HOWTO only creates a
template
and does not convert password from the the /etc/passwd file

2) make sure you put a "smb passwd file = " in your global section of your
smb.conf that points to your smbpasswd file. I put mine in my /etc
directory (same
place as my regular passwd - just makes sense to me)

3) you can use the "learn" feature to create the actual smbpasswd
(encryption must
be off while this is happening) or you can can log in as the user and use
"smbpasswd"
to change the password. I leave the "learn" (Update Encrypted) feature
commented out
in my smb.conf

4) make sure you have a user called "pcguest" or the NT workstations will
not "Browse"
(only the samba server will show up in Network Neighborhood)

Have fun!

Subject: MULTIPLE DNS HOSTS ON ONE MACHINE
Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 15:34:44 -0700

I have a primary nameserver setup and running BIND 4.9.3 under slackware

I presently have the /etc/HOSTNAME set to host.primarydns.com
and the host registered with the internic as such, with the appropriate
ip and hostname pointing to my this server.

Now... I would like to make this box a primary DNS, only
under a DIFFERENT name for some other things I'm doing.

I have assigned an entire class C, so I have lots of IPs to work with.

I understand I can use IP aliasing, to assign another ip
address to the NIC card.. fine. I have already done that.

I would like to call the hostname associated with the NEW
ipaddress host.anothername.com, and use it as a primary DNS.

The question is... how can I turn the box, into another
primary DNS server ( In other words, it's going to double
as TWO primary DNS servers, using TWO seperate PRIMARY
NAMESERVER HOSTNAMES .

No need to go into detail about how to alias the IP on
the nIC card... already have that one figured out.

Please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank You all in advance.

Hi anyone out there,

I'm having (rather serious) problems with Linux. I'm using Caldera's
OpenLinux 1.3 with KDE 1.0 on Pentium 200, RAM 64 MB and SupraExpress
336i on COM3 (which works fine on 'Microsoft' Windows 98), the 2.0.35
kernel was compiled to support pentium and ppp internally. It can't be
configured to connect to Internet at all.

First I used kppp (script based), it dialed, logged in, and told me that
it was 'logging on to network'. But that was that, it stayed put, until
timed-out.

Here's what happened on script debug window:

I tried looking up the howto's. Nothing seems to help.

ummm.... you *do* realize that not only is this an old beta version, but
this was right around the time that the filesystem rewrite actually could
cause filesystem corruption?

go with 2.2.6 instead, it's the latest stable version.

I don't think I'm gonna agree with that. Way too much visual confusion...

Subject: RedHat 5.2 - How do I install a net card if not in installer?
Date: Sun, 18 Apr 1999 03:57:26 GMT

hi

I have a Compex EN2000 ISA ethernet card installed in a red hat linux 5.2
machine. There wasn't a network card in the computer when i installed linux,
so i told the installer i didnt want to set network options or whatever it
asks you. I just put the compex card in it and i do not know how to set it
up. I SYSed the driver disk on a windows machine and booted the linux
machine with it so i could run EASYSET. I put it on 2C0h i/o port and irq
10. i tried putting them in under the basic host information in both netconf
and linuxconf, but they disappear when i press accept. Whyyyyyy?!??!?!? i am
very frustrated please help! Be explicit with the instructions if you don't
mind

You didn't do anything wrong yet ;) The problem is you haven't installed the
package containing the make program, now unfortunately I don't know what
packages it is in as I don't use RedHat myself

It's not graphical, but the terminal output is great stuff
