Below, I attempt to install the NE2000 ethernet module. However, RedHat
complains:
insmod -o eth0 /lib/modules/2.0.36-0.7/net/ne.o
/lib/modules/2.0.36-0.7/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_open

Any idea why?

You actually need 3 bits because you shouldn't use all zero's or all one's.
Assuming a Class C network address of 221.40.28.x as an example:
Use the equation 2^n - 2 to determine the number of bits required ( -2
because you can't use all one's or all zero's). In this case, you will
require 3 bits. The 6 valid subnets would be:
1101 1101 . 0010 1000 . 0001 1100 . 001x xxxx ==> 221.40.28.32 ip's
221.40.28.33 to 221.40.28.62
1101 1101 . 0010 1000 . 0001 1100 . 010x xxxx ==> 221.40.28.64 ip's
221.40.28.65 to 221.40.28.94
1101 1101 . 0010 1000 . 0001 1100 . 011x xxxx ==> 221.40.28.96 ip's
221.40.28.97 to 221.40.28.126
1101 1101 . 0010 1000 . 0001 1100 . 100x xxxx ==> 221.40.28.128 ip's
221.40.28.129 to 221.40.28.158
1101 1101 . 0010 1000 . 0001 1100 . 101x xxxx ==> 221.40.28.160 ip's
221.40.28.161 to 221.40.28.190
1101 1101 . 0010 1000 . 0001 1100 . 110x xxxx ==> 221.40.28.192 ip's
221.40.28.193 to 221.40.28.254
and the subnet mask is
1111 1111 . 1111 1111 . 1111 1111 . 1110 0000 ==> 255.255.255.224
Note that in the valid IP ranges, you also do not use all zero's or all
one's.

Probably not as much money as you think...maintaining modem racks,
ugh, chasing dial-tone problems (US West, at least, seems to be
a total pain in the ass for ISPs to deal with). Ugh ugh ugh. I'd
rather work at McDonald's, I think :)
>what is
>it that they have and i don't that allows them to connect directly to the
>internet?
Nothing, in one sense - they connect to someone upstream just like
you connect upstream to them. One example of an upstream someone is
vereo. If you check out their web page, you'll find that at least in
my area you can purchase services directly from them, as they're in
that business as well. Not cheap, though, their market, along
with providing ISP connectivity is to provide services to business.
Co-hosting of web sites, for instance - Intel's was hosted there
a year or so ago, think it still is but am not sure.
But they'll sell you end-user DSL service, $69/month (as opposed
to $19.95/month from my ISP). Buying from my ISP, my packets
go to a Portland, OR server, to Vancouver WA (where my ISP lives),
then on to Vereo. If I bought from Vereo direct, I'd cut two
hops out but at a steep price, and my current ISP service maxes
out my DSL line when I'm talking to an adequate server at the
other end so I'm happy.
>Network Service Pro
is their connection through telephone lines like mine is? if so,
>why don't we all have direct internet connections?
Because full-time connectivity, until recently, was very
expensive.
DSL and cable modems are changing that. I pay the phone company
$40/month for DSL (this takes the place of a second phone line
so my incremental price is closer to $20/mo) for 256/256 kbs
service, and my ISP charges no more for this than they due for
dial-up lines ($19.95/mo, or $189 if you buy 12 months at a
time).
So the reason we don't all have direct connections now are
1) not available in your area or 2) don't need 'em and aren't
willing to pay the modest price increment to get 'em.
>do they pay someone for
>their direct connection to the internet?
My ISP pays vereo and at least one other backbone service (to
have more than one connection in case one backbone company's network
gets hosed temporarily, or the line between the ISP and the backbone
company).

I'm trying to get a ThinkPad 765L (p/n 9547 U9J) and an IBM "Token Ring
Auto 16/4 Credit Card Adapter" (p/n 92G9352) to play together with no
luck. I'm using linux 2.0.36 and 2.2.5, pcmcia 3.0.9. In particular, I
get hwaddr=000000000000, as below:
Apr 18 13:36:12 snafu cardmgr[1346]: socket 0: IBM Token Ring Adapter
Apr 18 13:36:13 snafu cardmgr[1346]: executing: 'insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.5/pcmcia/ibmtr_cs.o'
Apr 18 13:36:13 snafu kernel: tr0: port 0xa20, irq 7, mmio 0xc4862000, sram 0xc0000,
Apr 18 13:36:13 snafu kernel: hwaddr=000000000000
Apr 18 13:36:13 snafu cardmgr[1346]: executing: './network start tr0'
Here's what I've tried so far:
1) hardwiring the MAC in ibmtr_cs.c. See the note about
"hardwiring the address for queer cards"?
2) various combinations of irqs, including turning all non-essential irqs
off using the dos PS2 command and/or the W95 ThinkPad configurator.
3) brute force memory searching for the correct MAC (which I alread know).
4) I have updated the thinkpad's bios and card's microcode, per IBM's
support website.
5) Brute force insmod'ing with a big range of mmio values, checking the
/var/log/messages for the correct MAC after each.
I work at IBM Watson labs and a few others here have token ring adapters
on thinkpads (running linux... yea!), but no one has my combination. I
can't help but feel that there's something peculiar about the combination
or specific models.
Thanks for any tips.

I have a problem.
If my Win9x client uses dhcp from my Linux box to get it's IP address, and
then uses a mail client to get at it's mail via ipop3d, diald dials out.
This does <<not>> occur if the Win9x client has a static IP address and that
IP address is listed correctly in the hosts file on the Linux box.
I assume that ipop3d is doing some sort of lookup to get (or check) the
hostname or IP address of the client, but that will fail because it's not
registered anywhere. Can this be disabled, or do I have to set up named to
work off my ISPs name server (yuck) and auto register my dhcp assignments in
the local name server (yuck) ?
By the way, after it does the lookup via my ISPs name server (which would
surely fail) it still succeeds in returning the waiting mail to the mail
client. What the **** is it doing the lookup for if it doesn't need to
!!!??!!!
My config is :-
RedHat 5.1 running 2.0.36.
Thanks,
Ian Lunam

sorry, I dont have.
you are sure, that your card is a ne2000 ?
you dont have loaded other modules before ?
what I would do ist the following :
empty modules.conf (or was it conf.modules, however) and reboot linux.
and then try to load the ne again.
if this module depends on another, I guess you should NOT load that
module before.
and I bet compiling into kernel would bring you the same problem and if
not, you can solve it without compiling into kernel by loading the module
earlier while booting linux.

Is there a way to query for DNS entries with an established connection? The

I believe that you are running NDS. If so, tough luck. You can't just

Hi all,
I'm having trouble getting DHCP to work with my cable provider under linux
though it works well under windows. I have dhcpcd 0.70 with the -h option
and it seems to work right except for it assigns the ip of eth0 as 0.0.0.0
everytime. I'm guessing this is because the ethernet card is not setup
properly before the ifup script is run. I used to put my networking stuff
(ifconfig, route, etc) in rc.local on my RedHat box so I'm wondering where
these commands should actually go so as the card is considered "up" when
ifup is run.

I'm trying to get a plip network interface started using the 2.0.36
kernel, and it won't go. This is a mostly stock RH5.2 machine, the
kernel is recompiled - but I've gotten the same problems with the stock
RH kernel.
I set the interface up using linuxconf (bad idea?) although I've tried
with ifconfig manually and get similar results. The error message I get
is:
SIOCSIFADDR: Operation not supported by device
plip0: unknown interface.
SIOCSIFDSTADDR: Operation not supported by device
plip0: unknown interface.
netmask: Unknown host
To me, this appears as if the plip module is not correctly loaded -
I shouldn't be getting errors setting network interface parameters if
the necessary networking modules are in memory. However, lsmod tells me
that plip is loaded just fine. Is there another module? The module
dependencies don't list one.
If anyone has gotten it working, I'm looking for help here. The lp
module is not loaded, nor is any other parallel port module. Printing
support was compiled as a module if I remember correctly, so that
shouldn't be interfering, but printing does appear to work (appear -
I don't have a printer on that machine, but it looks good). This means
it shouldn't be IRQ/IO address problems.
