Peter,
I am quite sure I have an NE2000 compatible NIC, since Win 95 has no trouble
recognizing the card.
I will try to empty /etc/conf.modules and load the modules manually. I
learned that ne.o depends on 8390.o, so I installed the 8390.o module before
ne.o. The unresolved symbols went away, but insmod complained that the
device was busy. I assume it means the ethernet card. Now I must determine
why it thinks the card is busy.

Hi,
I have a problem with the 3com575 (10/100) network card and the sound
system.
Basically things work together fine at web surfing speeds, but if I
hammer the network
a bit say with a 300Mb file, my networking hangs after around 128Mb.
Any clues as what I can set to diagnose what is happening?.
Nigel
P.S.
I'm running a Dell 3200 with 2.2.6 kernel & pcmcia 3.0.10 drivers.
3Com 3CCFE575 Cyclone CardBus
psion 56k goldcard
cs4232 (Crystal Sound) sound modules
and running esd (which enlightenment uses) is very good at exposing the
problem
whilst ftp'ing from my SGI O2.
P.P.S. Major kudos to the network coders 5.2Mbytes from a laptop & 5.7
into a laptop is awesome.

I can't get linux to find or recognize my ethernet card it's a 3c509b.
It works fine in NT but I've tried to get it to go in Xwindows, no luck.
I've redone the kernel and made sure it was enabled--nothing. When I go to
ifconfig eth0 says it's not a device. It's listed as supported? I'm using
redhat 5.2. Tthe book I'm using the guy is using the same card as reference.
Please help. Email replies please to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi everybody.
I have a portable computer with a PCMCIA Ethernet card ("ovislink") and
a PS/2 mouse.
Under Windows 3.1, when I work with the ethernet card for a while, the
mouse sudenly becomes crazy: it starts moving randomly, behaves as
pressing the buttons, etc.
If somebody has had the same problem or knows how to help me....
Thanks very much to everybody.

You were right.
If ip_masq_ftp.o module was loaded explicitly by
modprobe ip_masq_ftp.o
ftp worked well. I don't understand why "modprobe -a ip_masq_*"
would not load the module correctly. Could anyone explain?

You might take a look at fetchmail (POP3 client) and combine it with sendmail /
qmail / ... (MTA). Running it in daemon mode when going online (see
/etc/ip-up.local ...), you can let it download each user's mail, forward it on
port 25 (smtp) to your local mailserver which deposits it in
/var/spool/mail/<user> (sendmail) or in ~<user>/Mailbox (qmail) .

I would like to throw in my support for this recommendation. Anyone who
thinks that M$'s desktop is more accessible than anything found on Linux
simply hasn't tried KDE or Gnome, period. These two environments make the
Windows desktop look like a toy, and a very poorly behaved toy at that. The
very sad thing is that KDE is really everything Windows could have been, and
should have been, if Bill Gates had not been so focused on dominating the
industry. Had he instead led his company in the direction of truly
designing the highest quality OS possible, he would have turned out a
product similar to Linux with KDE or Gnome.
Someone who makes statements such as the original poster who started this
thread about how Windows in any form can in any measure be considered
superior to Linux (or really any shade of Un*x) with a well-designed X
window manager is simply being foolish and displaying a total lack of
understanding of computers in general. These people are the lemmings who
follow the crowd off the cliff without a second thought, and just before
they reach the bottom wonder "now, how did I wind up in this predicament?"
One poster in these newsgroups had a good proverb attached to his signature
(I can't recall who it was to give credit): "Microsoft says, 'Oh, you have a
brain? Well, you won't need it as long as you stay in this nice little
corner we've designed for you.' Linux says, "Oh, you have a brain? Here's
a lot of fun things you can do with it.'"

There is also an excellent graphical monitor implemented as an
X-client by Matt Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> called "Pload".
It is readily available, and the latest version for use with
v2.2.x kernels supports various physical network access methods.
Look in comp.os.linux.announce for details.

Hi again everyone. Thanks a bundle for all the helpful remarks. IMHO this is
the greatest thing about linux, there are people actually willing to help :)
Anyway, I have been corrected on the 'duplex' front, and now I'm using only
half duplex on the linux box. This improved my network performance
significantly with the majority of my users; they're now seeing transfer
rates in the range of 1.5 - 3 MB/sec, but some of them are still dead slow
(sadly, including my personal workstation). I've manually check every
Win9x/NT box on the net to enforce half duplexing, but I also have a couple
of SGI's running IRIX, and for these I have no idea how to check which
duplex-ing they're doing (I know, this is comp.os._LINUX_ :), so my question
becomes: If they are using full duplex, could they be slowing down network
connection on machines connected to the same hub? and could that explain why
NFS-ing between the Linux and IRIX's is utterly broken, speed-wise (1-3 min
responses to a simple pwd on a mounted directory. PS. I'm probably going to
post a separate question about all this NFS thing if my sanity doesn't take
the day-off.......)
Thanks in advance.

Hi all
A Big problem for which I would like a quick answer.....
I'm running Rh 5.2 with 2.0.36 Kernel. Samba is installed and works
correctly (I can see shares with an NT client)
When I use SMBMOUNT to map an NT disk on my Linux box, it works
correctly except ONE thing : every files I transfer are in Upper Case.
I would like to know how to have files copied in Lower case. I have to
make softwar updates by FTP and updates cannot be made because don't
find files on FTP server. If I rename all files in lower case, updates
work perfectly
Thanks for your help.

Hi
yea i read the artical and by the looks of it they misconfigured apache
and they did some clever NT4 registry hacking
how many other ppl out there think that is fair
most servers will not run that setup
eg a 486 will run a small time webserver (in linux) <-- 4 ISDN lines for
bandwith
i would like to see nt handle it on my 486 that linux seems to run fine on

Hmmm. It seems that Linux was starved for memory. There is a comment
to the effect that the Linux kernel "limited itself to 960meg".
There is no mention that they tried to override this limit -- with Lilo
or anything else.
