I have a 3Com 3c900 pci ethernet card that works under Windows 95.
However I get the following error when I try running dhcpcd 0.70 on
Linux:
ioctl SIOCSIFFLAGS (ifConfig): Try again
I am running 2.0.36 and here is what is displayed when the machine is
booted:
eth0: 3Com 3c900 at 0xe800, 00:50:04:72:46:7b, IRQ 9
8K byte-wide RAM 5:3 Rx:Tx split, autoselect/NWay Autonegotiation

Enabling bus-master transmits and whole-frame receives.

Could it be that I have an IRQ conflict or something?
I'd like to get this resolved ASAP so I don't have to use Windows.
Thanks

All the problems you're having/mistakes you're making seem very familiar.
I've just made them -and probably a few more besides :-)
If you just read the Ethernet-HOWTO I'm sure that'll go a long way towards
sorting out the problem.

Erm... there is no source on the CD I looked at, which disappointed
me a bit over their misleading advertising. What exactly do you
think they provide source to?
They give you Apache source. They don't give you any source that you can
use to recompile a new httpd with the SSL stuff in it.

Subject: "RPC request still queued" when NFS server has been unavailable
Date: 20 Apr 1999 09:16:23 GMT
I've got a PC running Linux 2.2.5 with RedHat 5.2. It mounts /usr from
another Linux server. This server also acts as NIS server to the PC.
The PC mounts a couple of volumes such as /home via amd from a third
server. The amd binary (am-utils version 6.0a16 (build 1)) is located on
the NFS mounted /usr, so are many other biaries and libraries. Now when the
NFS server has been unavailable for some longer time (is for example down
bue to maintenance) the PC's console keeps displaying error messages like
"RPC request still queued". Access to NFS mounted volumes fails, which for
this configuration of course is fatal; the machine, while it has not
crashed, practically hangs (since many services require access to /usr).
Is there some kind of deadlock situation occuring? (e.g. some RPC related
binary needed to empty that rpc queue can only be accessed trough that
queue, which happens to be full? Could it be amd or NIS which cause the
trouble?
Did anybody with a similar configuration (e.g. diskless machines)
experience something similar? What exactly is causing it, and more
important, how can it be prevented? Is it a bug in Linux's networking
code/design?

Ok, so in order to get a valid guest account with security=domain, I
would,
e.g., set the samba guest account to "nobody", have a nobody account on
my samba server _and_ have to set up a nobody account on the NT box?

Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 10:48:27 +0200
Does Linux act as a "Black hole" router? i.e., if a TCP packet arrives
to be routed which is larger than the MTU size, and the "Don't Fragment"
bit is set, what behaviour should we expect? At present, it seems to
drop such packets silently. I would expect the Linux kernel to send an
ICMP unreachable packet, so that the TCP stack at the other end can try
sending the packets with the "Don't Fragment" bit in the TCP header
clear.

You have to setup a secure socket connection to do this. Don't ask me
how. I dunno. There really is no need to login as root though, as you
can just log in as whatever user, then su root. In order to use
administration commands then, you have to set your PATH variable to
include whatever directory has your administration commands in it (like
usr/sbin, for instance... check out root's PATH variable and find out).

i am NOT familiar with RH so just a few default hints you did compile
networking into the kernel, along with your nic? you are booting up to the
appropriate level( normally 2 opr 3)? look in the correct rc*, normally rc2
and or rc3 ( startup-scripts for the levels 2 /3 ) if there is something like
S(for start)>somenumberhere<eth0? there MIGHT be some kind of administrative
tool, for adding hardware, users etc.. ? where you can add and configure your
networking options , tcpip,ppp and stuff ?

Hello,
I want to install a Linux-gateway-computer. The computer has two network
interfaces to link two networks. I switched the routing-fuction in the
kernel off. The routing should be done only by a special application. The
routing between the two networks is not possible. Thats OK, but its possible
to ping both network interfaces in the gateway computer from both networks.
How can I change this situation. The ping schould only be possible to one
network interface (e.g. from network A to eth0 and from network B to eth1).
What have I to do to get these result. Can I combine this problem with a
special firewall configuration?
Thanks Heiko

How about using host security, and setting your X server to accept
only 127.0.0.1? It seems to work for me.
Attempts by other sessions on the remote host to forward X traffic down
"my" tunnel are rejected by ssh rather than by X (in my case, TTSSH
reports "remote X application sent incorrect authentication data").
Attempts to send X directly, without using ssh, are of course rejected
by X with "Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server".
Any loopholes in this?

Maybe that's 'cause mod_ssl is better ;)
Seriously though, I found ApacheSSL's implementation to be horrible. It
feels (to me) like a quick hack someone did to patch Apache. mod_ssl (while
based on ApacheSSL, originally) is a very well laid out module, has the
*best* documentation I've seen for a module (www.engelschall.org has great
docs not just on the module, but on SSL in general), and overall just comes
across as the better of the two. I've played with both, and I'll never
consider using ApacheSSL when mod_ssl is an option.

There are still risks even if X is forwarded via ssh. The X cookie is written
in the .Xauthority file, and if someone can access it (if the remote machine
is compromised, if the home directory is NFS exported etc) they can access
your display, read/insert keystrokes etc.
I'd like to see an X proxy/filter that allows me to set up rules for which
traffic to allow or block different kinds of X traffic (for example inbound
keystrokes, outbound cut-n-paste, limit number of connections etc). Does
anyone know if there is such a thing.

Please ignore my previous post - I missed some of the answers to the original
question. I was able to fix my problem (with an HP Pavilon 6460) by going
into the BIOS and changing a setting that asked "INSTALLED OS?". It gave as
possibilities WIN98/NT5.0, WIN95, or 'other'. Choosing other apparently
disables PNP, for the PCI Bios correctly assigned an IRQ to the card. There
were no explicit settings to enable/disable PNP.
One other detail is that I had to load the driver as a module, not compiled
into the OS. I have no idea why that would make a differece.
Oh, and now WIN98 crashes when I attempt to shut it down with the Bios change.
Could be worse - at least it doesn't crash on startup!
Cheers

That's because they're the same thing. "mod_ssl" is the name of the DSO that
Apache uses. Apache-SSL is apache with mod_ssl enabled. When comparing the
two, the person doing the comparison probably meant static versus dynamic
linking. The end result is the same, and it doesn't really matter which way
you link in mod_ssl. The DSO way of doing things is generally considered
"kewler", if that matters.

There were many things wrong with the set-up of which this was but
one, and one of the more minor ones at that, (since it merely gave the
NT box a 40ish MB advantage).
Linux Weekly News has links to a more detailed discussion of the flaws
in the tests:

I *do* have RedHat Secure Web Server, but it is based on Apache 1.2.6. Now
I am looking the features of Apache 1.3, so I wonder if I get Apache-SSL
or mod_ssl for Apache 1.3, whether the RSA license I bought for the RedHat
Secure Web Server will be applicable.
The next question is whether the certificate I used for RedHat Secure Web
Server can be used for Apache-SSL or mod_ssl.
I also want to know which one better, Apache-SSL or mod_ssl? I found
arguments for using mod_ssl, but nothing for Apache-SSL.
Thanks!

Subject: MSN gaming zone through firewall
Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 00:51:42 -0700
Ok, I have some new info!
Quoted from Microsoft knowledge base article Q159031:
To play DirectX games across a firewall, verify that all computers in the
game are running DirectX 6.0, and then ask your firewall administrator to
configure the firewall to use the following settings:
Allow an initial outbound TCP connection on port 47624.
Allow subsequent inbound and outbound connections on TCP and UDP ports
2300-2400.
Set appropriate permissions for DirectPlay (Client).
Additionally, to play games on the Zone, the following TCP ports on the
firewall must be open:
8995 - 11000
28800 - 28900
Now, the big question is, how do I implement this with ipchains and
ipmasqasm?

We can all sympathize with your goal to find an answer. However, cross
spamming, and posting in _unrelated_ newsgroups is considered a big breach
of 'netiquette'. Please consider this message a sand bucket against the
coming flame.
